Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman October 18, 2020

Universal has released all three films in the popular 'Back to the Future' franchise in one new UHD collection. All three films on UHD include 2160p/Dolby Vision color grading as well as new Dolby Atmos soundtracks. The included Blu-ray discs, which are also available in their own trilogy release, include freshly remastered video but curiously carry over the old DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtracks rather than include the new Atmos mixes. This set includes all of the carryover content from the 2010 set and the 2015 re-release and is also home to a handful of new supplements as well.

For some thoughts on the films please see the Blu-ray.com review page for the 2010 Blu-ray release by clicking here.

Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  5.0 of 5

Each of the three film discs contain a slew of carryover extras. Please click through the links at the bottom of this section to be directed to a breakdown of what's included on each disc. This set also includes a bonus disc with additional content, both new and returning from the 30th Anniversary Trilogy release. For review of the carryover content from that set, please click here. It's also worth noting that this set comes packaged in DigiBook styling which is extremely reminiscent of the 30th Anniversary set. This one ships in a sturdy embossed slipbox but the DigiBook recycles much of the same layout, including bonus feature listings for each film, artwork, still photo montages, and the like. There's some variance in packaging color, and the DigiBook front and back artwork is different (the new one using the famous poster image from the first film while the back features a picture of a speeding DeLorean). It's also thicker to accommodate the UHD discs, which have been inserted on each left-hand side for the corresponding movie page.

  • NEW! The Hollywood Museum Goes Back to the Future (1080p, 10:17): Founder and President of the Hollywood Museum Donelle Dadigan tours the museum's Back to the Future exhibit: the typewriter on which the script was typed, the hoverboard, two DeLoreans, the Tales from Space comic book, key costumes, and several otherwise minor props, like future currency, an 1880s gun belt, Marty's hat from Part II, and more.
  • NEW! Back to the Future: The Musical Behind the Scenes: A three part feature that breaks down the curious musical adaptation.

    • Cast and Creative Q&A (1080p, 28:15): An interview with Bob Gale, Christopher Lloyd, Musical Producer Colin Ingram, and Actors Olly Dobson and Roger Bart.
    • "Gotta Start Somewhere" (1080i, 2:33): A music video from the musical.
    • "Put Your Mind to It" (1080i, 2:59): Another music video from the musical.
  • NEW! An Alternate Future: Lost Audition Tapes (1080p, 3:45): Includes auditions from Billy Zane as Biff Tannen, Peter DeLuise as Biff Tannen, Kyra Sedgwick as Jennifer Parker, C. Thomas Howell as Marty McFly, Jon Cryer as Marty McFly, and Ben Stiller as Marty McFly.
  • NEW! Could You Survive the Movies? Back to the Future (1080p, 19:47): A YouTube video that explores whether characters could actually survive some of the trauma and trials they face in the film: Marty getting blown back by the speaker, time travel realities, and getting struck by lightning.

Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Simply stated, all three films look and sound terrific, each bordering on reference quality. The first film shows the most warts (which are still very few) and the third film is all but UHD perfection. The new Atmos tracks are tastefully done. The new extras are of the take-them-or-leave them variety, but of course the reason to buy this set is for the three UHD discs, which earn this set my highest recommendation.
