Back to the Future Part II 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker October 22, 2025

The second installment of the blockbuster hit trilogy, 'Back to the Future' returns to 4K UHD in this 'Back to the Future II 4K Limited Edition SteelBook' courtesy of Universal. Picking up where the first film left-off, the beloved film stars Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, and Christopher Lloyd as Doctor Brown, as they send themselves into the future (the year 2015!) with the best of intentions, only to end up disrupting the space-time continuum, requiring even more time-travel to undo the damage. This release carries over both discs from the previous 4K release, and includes all legacy supplemental material. Please scroll down to the 'Special Features and Extras' section below for a discussion of the new SteelBook. A Digital Code is also included.

Back to the Future Part II 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

The Limited Edition SteelBook for Back to the Future II 4K shares a common format with the other two newly released SteelBooks in the trilogy. The DeLorean is found at the bottom. Above it, in the bottom of a lightning bordered circle is the film's title. And, above that, in the lightning-rimmed circle, is Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox). Around the edges of the cover, are various identifiable characters and/or items from the film. In this instance, the cover has a reddish color scheme, and easily differentiates it from the other two. At the bottom of the cover, the DeLorean flies toward the viewer. In the main image in the circle, an astonished Marty is joined by an equally astonished Doc Brown. Both are in identical poses. The black spine is home to the film's title in it's traditional font, with the Universal logo at the bottom. On the reverse, which carries over the same red color-scheme, the dominant image is of Marty McFly (Fox) holding a Hover Board, which I'm sure many fans are still hoping will one day appear on store shelves. Doc Brown, The clock tower, and the DeLorean are also featured. Opening the SteelBook, two tabs on the inside of the left cover hold the Digital Code in place. On the right side, the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray disc which each contain the feature film and legacy extras are stagger-stacked, each on its own hub, with the 4K UHD disc on top. Removing the discs and the code reveals a two-panel image several historical documents, including a sports magazine, a newspaper, a California license plate, and a movie poster for Jaws 19. The SteelBook does not feature any embossed or debossed elements. It has been given a matte finish that does a good job of resisting fingerprints associated with normal handling. Once again, the title is spot-glossed.

Back to the Future Part II 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

The Back to the Future films are beloved treasures of modern American cinema, as much a product of their time as they are timeless. While the second film wasn't originally part of the plan, it flows seamlessly from the finish of the first, and features an intriguing look at what the filmmakers envisioned for the now ten-years-gone 2015. For fans of the franchise that have yet to matriculate to 4K, or those looking to swap out a more "standard" release for a flashier, film-specific SteelBook, or more devout SteelBook collectors who purchased the new SteelBook of the first film and are wishing to main consistency in their collections, the Back to the Future II 4K Limited Edition SteelBook comes highly recommended.
