Universal has released 'Back to the Future' to Blu-ray with a newly remastered 1080p transfer. The studio has simply ported over the existing DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack. The individual disc includes all of the extras from the 2010 set while a bonus disc in the remastered trilogy collection, in which this disc is currently exclusive, includes all of the then-new extras from the 2015 re-release as well as several now-new features.
The newly remastered 1080p picture cannot match the UHD for perfect filmic accuracy. It's a clear step down but a good step up from the old, inadequate, and outdated decade-old Blu-ray. The picture holds firm to a fairly nice, natural grain structure accentuating the many handsome textures throughout, including Marty's denim jacket, scientific gizmos and odds and ends, and all sorts of vintage textures throughout the 1950s version of Hill Valley. There are times when the picture struggles a little with maintaining definition. Some of the shots during the scene when George confronts Biff out in the school parking lot almost look standard def, but such are very few and far between. Colors are healthy and full, boasting good flesh tones, quality black levels, and nice contrast and saturation to critical hues, like natural greenery, Marty's denim jacket, and various lights and readouts inside the DeLorean. Black levels are very impressive at the 1:00 AM hour in the mall parking lot as seen in chapter five. Flesh tones are of a good quality, too. Most fans would be very happy with this release in isolation, but after watching the film on UHD there's just no mistaking that this one can't keep up, try as it might in all areas. Still, it's a solid step forward from Universal's older efforts in all key areas: filmic accuracy, clarity, detail, and color.

This Blu-ray release of Back to the Future contains numerous supplements. All
of the extras on this disc were originally included with the 25th Anniversary Blu-ray Collection released in 2010. See below for a listing of
what's included and please click here for full coverage. As it ships in
the larger DigiBook collection, a Movies Anywhere digital copy code is included with purchase.
This newly remastered 1080p Blu-ray cannot match the UHD counterpart for sheer viewing bliss, but the presentation is rock-solid and a good bit better than the older releases. It's disappointing that the studio did not bring over the new Atmos audio track, but the existing 5.1 listen is plenty solid. This disc includes a slew of legacy extras. Recommended.
