I still remember what it was like watching Iron Man back in the cinema on opening day: the 2nd of May, 2008 was when it all began. It was so much fun sitting in that movie-theater, watching Robert Downey Jr. bring Tony Stark to life, and marveling at both the spectacle and humanity of the filmmaking. I felt as though I had just seen one of the best comic-book films ever made. (I still do.)
Avengers: Endgame has been a long time coming. If someone had told me when I first sat down to experience Iron Man for the first time that one day the film would help create one of best cinematic universes ever created I'd have been surprised. I just didn't see it coming.
That reaction is not because I didn't expect a great movie out of Iron Man, nor because I didn't love the lore of Marvel comics (I grew up reading Captain America every-single-month), and certainly not because I wouldn't have loved the idea behind a Marvel film series. It's simply because nothing of that magnitude had ever been done before (let alone attempted).
Growing up, I often wondered what it might be like to see some of my favorite comic heroes turned into big Hollywood stars. It didn't seem as though I would ever even see a Captain America film that did justice to the character. I even daydreamed about making a Captain America feature myself when I was older. (When Captain America: The First Avenger opened I felt like a dream had just come true.)
Marvel Studios reinvented the wheel entirely for comic book films with their Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tony Stark and Iron Man set the tone perfectly and audiences were lucky enough to be along for the ride for all these years. Avengers: Endgame is the perfect culmination of the series to date. I cheered, I laughed, I cried, and I was deeply, deeply moved.
As far as big budget comic book features go, Avengers: Endgame is about as close to a masterpiece as one can get. I'll never forget the day it culminated: April 25th, 2019. My 30th birthday (another turning point in my life). And as soon as the credits rolled, I knew I wanted to go right back to the beginning and see where it all started again.
Time to assemble.

Complete the epic journey in 3D. Avengers: Endgame has a stunning 3D presentation with a 1080p MPEG-4 MVC encoded high-definition presentation in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 widescreen. Please note that the presentation aspect ratio remains the same as what was found on the standalone 4K and Blu-ray editions. The shifting scope aspect ratio utilized for IMAX presentations is unfortunately not included on this release (as was found on the presentation of Captain Marvel 3D). While the 3D quality on the release is exceptional, the lack of the IMAX ratio on any disc presentation (as of this writing) is disappointing. Disney and IMAX should reconsider this decision and release the IMAX footage with a future release.
The good news is that the 3D presentation looks absolutely stunning with great depth that brings one closer to the action-packed adventure. As one of the biggest tentpole films ever made, it's even more exciting watching the epic scope of the filmmaking unfold in 3D. This is a beautiful looking production and the richness of the cinematography comes to life magnificently with this high quality encode. Clarity remains consistently impressive throughout the presentation and colors are satisfying.
Details in the image are altogether crisp and enveloping. The 3D has plenty of pop-out moments while maintaining a presentation focused primarily on adding depth to the image. Seeing The Avengers duke it out with Thanos is even further heightened with Cap's shield, Thor's hammer, and Doctor Strange's mysticism appearing even more impressive with the added dimension. This is a showstopping 3D presentation which shouldn't go overlooked by Marvel fans. One of the best 3D presentations by Marvel. A must-own release.
The audio is provided with a high resolution 24 bit 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio sound presentation. The audio is greatly enhanced by the high-definition soundstage. This lossless audio presentation sounds terrific with great dialogue reproduction and crystal-clear sound effects. The epic score composed by Alan Silvestri also provides the film with thunderous excitement and intrigue. One can't help but get lost in the dynamic presentation and its superb bass reproduction and the clear highs. From the great song selections to the non-stop action at the film's conclusion, Avengers: Endgame sounds consistently great. Optional English SDH subtitles (for the deaf and hard of hearing) are also provided.
Avengers: Endgame received an impressive collectible steelbook edition from Zavvi. The 3D steelbook edition comes with a design that has decent art-work showcasing the heroes of the saga. While the steelbook might have benefited from a full-gloss print quality, the print is reasonable and looks nice in hand. The interior art-work spotlights Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson with the signatures of both actors emblazoned on the art. The design is a nice tribute to these iconic comic-book superheroes.
As with casual Thor, Avengers: Endgame has plenty of weight for fans to enjoy with its extra features. For a complete evaluation of the extras please click here to view the published review on the standard edition.
Avengers: Endgame is the motion-picture event of a generation.
One of the best comic-book films of all time, Avengers: Endgame stuns with great storytelling, superb performances, and epic special effects. Watching it in 3D is an even more immersive experience than seeing it any other way. Anyone who is equipped for 3D should consider this to be one of the best 3D Marvel presentations to date and a must-own release which belongs in the collection of fans everywhere. The exceptional 3D Blu-ray release earns my highest recommendation.
The collectors edition 3D steelbook of Avengers: Endgame looks beautiful and makes a nice addition to any Marvel collection. The art-work is reasonably good and the print quality pleases (even if a full gloss steelbook is preferable). The release is well-worth owning.
