Avengers: 4-Movie Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman August 13, 2019

Disney and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive four film, nine disc SteelBook release for the 'Avengers' family of films, the centerpieces of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the previously released UHD SteelBooks. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the set's construction and the SteelBooks' look and feel.

Suffice it to say, this set is fairly large when compared to the size of four individual SteelBooks stacked together. First, the essential outer shell dimensions: it measures just a shade under 6 inches in width, 7.5 inches high, and just over 5 inches deep. The box ships with what would be a "J" card on other SteelBooks but that here wraps around all four sides with a top layer identifier on three sides -- franchise titles, Best Buy exclusivity notice -- and a full-length sheet on the rear that advertises what's inside and features notices on digital versions, microscopic disc specs, and some legalese which takes up about a fifth of the page. It also wraps around to the bottom where the UPC, the proofs of purchase, the billing blocks, and the ratings information can be found. The sheet is of a predominantly purple color across all surfaces.

Once that is slipped off -- and it takes a bit of patience and care to get it off without tearing it; it's a tight fit -- the meat of the product becomes more visible. The primary outer shell is a plastic that wants to be metal. It has that dark gray brushed metal look about it with some fake wear applied in the form of scuffs and pitting and what not. It looks like it's been dragged through battle which is a nice touch (though of course it's smooth to the touch). On the left and right sides are faintly visible and fairly small Avenger logos running vertically down the center. They are identical on both sides and include symbols for Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, the core six that's been involved in the film series from the outset. The bottom panel includes the usual micro printing work: a Marvel Studios logo, a copyright notice, and a model number. The top panel is a blank slate, that same brushed and beat up metal look without any sort of print on it.

The meat of the set comes in the front and the back, and it's debatable as to which is which. On one side, the side that, in this reviewer's opinion, is the one that will look best facing outward from the shelf, is a handsomely debossed imprint of the world-famous Avengers "A" logo. It fills up the majority of the space, but below is the text "The Avengers Assembled" in worn white/gray lettering and "Complete 4-Movie Collection" in yellow letters below that. On the flip side is an open space where the four SteelBooks are assembled. The entire inside is filled with a black padded and very sturdy foam material. Each SteelBook enjoys its own space, and there's plenty of room in between each cutout, allowing them to breathe, stay out of contact with one another (avoiding unwanted rubbing and possible scratches), and ample room to reach in and pull them out (there is an added finger-sized cutout tab on both ends). The SteelBooks fit in there snug, just snug enough to hold securely but not so snug as to require excess force to remove them. Slipped in between two of the SteelBook is a one sheet, four film digital copy voucher and a handsome thick piece of card stock tucked inside a semitransparent envelope, a note from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

And now for the SteelBooks themselves. Rather than break down each one individually, it's easier to note that they all share a common aesthetic, on the outside in particular. The front of each of these slick, smooth, glossy, and fingerprint-prone SteelBooks appear a large red Avengers "A," each in their own color scheme and stylization (pictures are included for reference in the "screenshots" tab, full exterior and interior shots, beginning with the first film and moving in chronological order). The rear sides include that same vertical stretch of Avenger logos running down the middle as are featured on the outer casing. They also take after the larger outer box with that worn metallic look on the rear sides, and in fact each of them are identical wth only the coloration the distinguishing characteristic. Each SteelBook interior features hand-drawn artist renditions as they pertain to each film; the original is subjectively the nicest, depicting all of the six core Avengers in battle pose. Again, pictures are included for reference.

Avengers: 4-Movie Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

This is a monster of a set, not so much size-wise or content-wise but considering the hefty price tag. At $150, it breaks down to $37.50 per SteelBook, which isn't that far off the usual new release SteelBook asking price at Best Buy (around $35). So there's a $10 premium for the outer case. Considering all of the sets are repackages of previous releases, it's difficult to recommend it to anyone but hardcore collectors or anyone starting the series fresh, ether in total or in terms of SteelBook collecting. Of course, each film has its own individual UHD SteelBook release (some of which are hard to find), which do aesthetically differ from these. All of that said, this is certainly a very nice way to own all of the films.
