At Close Range Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman October 30, 2022
Longtime readers of this site may recall that one of the original owners of Twilight Time kind of freaked out when some of our members used the Wiki
submission process this site offers to indicate when the end of Twilight Time's licensing deals on various titles might fall due, which admittedly they
probably shouldn't have been doing since they weren't privy to the inside negotiations that resulted in those licensing deals. That said, this individual
came after me with both guns blazing, as if I were responsible for the situation, when I was in fact attempting to go through each and every
Twilight Time listing and clean things up (I did receive emailed apologies from the two other former principals of the company for their partner's
behavior, which I joke that I still curate). All of this "backstage drama" aside, the fact remains that licensing deals do expire, and as I only
recently mentioned in our The Last Detail 4K Blu-ray
review, a veritable slew of titles that Twilight Time originally released on Blu-ray are now reappearing courtesy of a variety of different labels,
with Sandpiper Films
seeming to have gotten the bulk of them (I reviewed Sandpiper's
Hawaii, originally released on Blu-ray by Twilight Time, and found the technical merits virtually interchangeable, though the Sandpiper
release did not have the same, or in fact really any, supplements). MVD Visual's MVD Rewind imprint has been another beneficiary of new licensing
deals, and another previous Twilight Time release is this disc currently under discussion.

For my thoughts on the film, please consult my original
At
Close Range Blu-ray review. To cut to the chase, this is another re-release where I think most will be hard pressed to find any major differences
in technical merits, though this release does at least port over some of the Twilight Time supplements.
At Close Range Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

At Close Range is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of MVD Visual's MVD Rewind imprint with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.34:1. As
mentioned above, the appearance of the two Blu-ray was to my eyes virtually identical, with both the strengths and occasional weaknesses I mentioned
in my review of the Twilight Time release. In the most brightly lit moments, the palette pops appealingly, and detail levels are very good to excellent.
Things can get fairly rough looking in any number of the darker moments, as I outlined in my original review, and as with the Twilight Time release,
there's momentary image instability and some recurrent if minor age related wear and tear.
At Close Range Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

At Close Range features a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track that I found indistinguishable from the original Twilight Time presentation.
Dialogue, effects and Patrick Leonard's evocative score are all presented without any issues. Optional English, Spanish and French subtitles are
available.
At Close Range Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

- Audio Commentary with james Foley
- Isolated Score Track is presented in LPCM 2.0 (the Twilight Time release offered it in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0).
- Trailers includes At Close Range (HD; 2:57), along with trailers for other releases from MVD Visual.
Additionally, the keepcase houses a folded mini-poster and packaging features a slipcover.
At Close Range Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

It's kind of interesting to see what "market forces" have done to now out of print Twilight Time versions of various films, and in that regard, At
Close Range is going for some pretty hefty bucks according to our database in its Twilight Time iteration. Anyone interested in the film should be
more than pleased with this re-release from the MVD Rewind Collection, as it more or less duplicates the technical merits of the original release, as well
as providing most of the supplements (the MGM 90th Anniversary trailer is missing, though I doubt anyone will miss it), as well as a poster
and slipcover.
