Arise, My Love Blu-ray Movie Review

A first-rate gem starring Claudette Colbert.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard November 22, 2021

Arise, My Love is an entertaining romantic-comedy gem produced by Arthur Hornblow Jr. (The Asphalt Jungle, Witness for the Prosecution). The film is based on the original story by Benjamin Glazer and Hans Szekely. Full of charm and wit, Arise, My Love features excellent performances by Claudette Colbert and Ray Milland.

Augusta Nash (Claudette Colbert) is a smart and savvy news reporter working on a big story. When American pilot Tom Martin (Ray Milland) becomes wrongfully imprisoned by Spanish opposition, Augusta enlists herself as Tom's “pretend spouse” in order to help him escape execution. As the reporter starts to fall for Tom, romance is in the air... and the adventure of a lifetime begins.

Claudette Colbert is a wonderful actress and her performance in Arise, My Love is enchanting. The actress showcases her remarkable range as an actress: delivering a smart and witty performance. Colbert is beautiful and graceful in her role.

The art direction by Hans Dreier (Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd.) and Robert Usher (Hold Back the Dawn, Nothing But the Truth) is one of the best elements of the film. Arise, My Love has wonderful design elements. The sets are detailed. A large amount of effort went into the design of the film.

Claudette Colbert: beauty and brains.

The cinematography by Charles Lang (Some Like It Hot, Sabrina) is visually rewarding and enchanting. The black and white cinematography shines. Arise, My Love is a wonderful looking gem. There is a lot to appreciate about the visual splendor.

The music by Victor Young (The Quiet Man, Around the World in 80 Days) helps enhance the film and the storytelling. The score was a nice backdrop to the filmmaking. Young is a gifted composer and the effort here is commendable.

The screenplay by Charles Brackett (The Lost Weekend, Sunset Blvd.) and Billy Wilder (Some Like It Hot, The Apartment) is fantastic: great fun. The characters are charming and well written. The dialogue delights.

Mitchell Leisen (Remember the Night, The Mating Season) brought the story to life in the director's chair. Arise, My Love is a pitch-perfect effort by the filmmaker. Leisen provided the film with an inventive visual style and brought amazing performances out of the cast. Arise, My Love is an entertaining classic. Don't miss it.
