Anyone But You 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Pretty, dumb.

Earning almost ten times its modest $25M budget at the box office in 2023, Will Gluck's Anyone But You scored big with rom-com fans looking for a pretty but lightweight diversion. Much of its visual appeal arrives in the physical form of stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, who play characters that go through the usual genre motions of hating each others' guts before eventually... well, you know. But Anyone But You doesn't stop there: its colorful and immaculate locations, magazine-ready interiors, photogenic co-stars, endless diversity, six-pack abs, and ample cleavage put this film in its own class of surface-level existence alongside your average J. Crew or Hollister commercial.

For separate synopses and roasts of Anyone But You, please see Ken Brown's review of Sony's 2024 Blu-ray or Brian Orndorf's theatrical coverage; their averaged take on the film is a dismal 1.5/5, which makes my 2.5/5 rating seem awfully generous. I obviously didn't love Anyone But You but am a bit more forgiving of its limitations because some of the jokes do indeed land, the leads' chemistry is decently strong, and some of its sillier slapstick-driven moments are par for the course. I'll still admit that it's nothing special but there's at least a little appeal to the formula, familiar as it is, and it makes a decent enough watch with your better half to barely squeak by on its own merits.

Whether that translates to spending $35 on this belated UHD -- which, given Anyone But You's rousing box-office success, really should have been an option in 2024 -- is entirely up to you and, for most, that linked Blu-ray will be more than enough. But besides for the obvious visual and sonic upgrades on this disc, there are a few "new" bonus features to be found here, which technically makes it a decent upgrade in every single department.

Sony's belated commitment to upgrading select catalog titles continues with Anyone But You, which was released on Blu-ray back in 2024 with no UHD option. This belated disc brings it closer to what fans might have seen theatrically, as its native 4K visuals look very appealing here in 2160p/HDR10/Dolby Vision, which offers a clearer view of the luxurious landscapes, immaculate houses, and the physiques of its stars. Everything's polished to a squeaky-clean digital shine with bright and vivid colors, solid fine detail, and decently deep black levels too. Even so, I can't bring myself to give a truly high rating (4+) for two reasons. For starters, unlike Sony's recent UHD edition of 50 First Dates (which is also filled with stunning location footage), Anyone But You's existing Blu-ray is extremely good, and in many respects gets us most of the way there already. Secondly, it has a somewhat filtered look that makes one think that a certain amount of processing was applied. Even so, the colors are spectacular and the HDR layer adds a pleasing depth to intensity and contrast levels, enough so that it's the clear winner when compared to the Blu-ray. It's just not quite a night-and-day improvement, even with the higher native resolution, HDR layer, and beefier bit rate in mind.

Anyone But You 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

The new* Dolby Atmos presentation is similarly slightly improved in that, impressive as it may be, the original DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track (which was the only option on Sony's 2024 Blu-ray) got the job done and, like its 1080p visuals, will be more than enough for most. Ken Brown offers a good overview of that 5.1 track -- which is carried over to this 4K disc as a secondary option -- in his linked review, and in all honesty it's a good foundation of what to expect from this Atmos track as well. The differences here are more precise discrete effects as well as sporadic but satisfying use of the overhead channels, which mostly lend their support to the film's original score and soundtrack as well as a handful of direction-based elements like weather events, planes, and helicopters. Again, this track offers a natural progression that, while not mandatory for a great listening experience, is nice to have if your setup supports it.

* - Unlike some studios, Sony has historically never offered Dolby Atmos mixes on their Blu-rays (whether or not a 4K option is offered), so more than likely this Atmos track was ready to go in 2024 but never used.

Anyone But You 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

This one-disc release ships in a keepcase with poster-themed cover artwork, a matching slipcover, and a Digital Copy redemption code. The extras surprisingly advance upon those found on the Blu-ray, adding an audio commentary and the film's trailer to an otherwise generic assortment of bite-sized featurettes.

Audio Commentary - Obviously recorded shortly after production but held back from the Blu-ray, this amiable feature-length track brings together director/co-writer Will Gluck and stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. As expected, it's pretty surface level and chatty, offering a decent mix of technical insight here and there but mostly focusing on lightweight material including stories from the set, location scouting, shout-outs to cast and crew members, post-production, and more. It's decently fun in a "Special Edition DVD" kind of way.

Anyone But You 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Anyone But You was a sizeable hit for Sony back in 2023, mostly due to its appealing leads, colorful locations, and unchallenging story. It's passable enough as a fluffy diversion for rom-com enthusiasts, but doesn't carve out any new territory for the genre... or really do much at all beyond going through the motions. Even so, it's pretty and harmless, and the former enjoys a few cursory visual advancements over the Blu-ray while the extras get a little extra love too. Fans should have had the choice to own this 4K more than two years ago... but by now, those who still enjoy Anyone But You should already know if it's worth buying again. At this price, newcomers will be fine with the Blu-ray.
