American Sniper 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 15, 2024

Warner Brothers has released a UHD SteelBook packaging variant for the hit 2014 War film 'American Sniper.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the UHD wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

American Sniper 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

Warner Brothers' UHD SteelBook for American Sniper is fairly glossy but won't attract many handling fingerprints. The background color is a creamy off-white. Chris Kyle is standing center, seen from about the knees up. He is facing forward in full combat dress, looking to his left. A worn American flag has been inserted behind him. The rear panel is the same creamy color. A star with a faded blue interior is seen center, and a billing block fills about the bottom 20% of the SteelBook. The spine is the highlight, featuring a solid blue color with the film's title in white, center. A white Warner Brothers logo appears at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The lone UHD disc is situated on the right on a central hub. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features Chris Kyle, seated on the right inside a cargo plane, looking upon a flag-draped casket before him.

For full coverage of the on-disc supplemental content, please click here for the content from the 2015 Blu-ray and please click here for the extras that were released on "The Chris Kyle Commemorative Edition" in 2016. Finally, please click here for coverage of the two new extras on the UHD disc.

American Sniper 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

American Sniper has received a solid UHD release, but the SteelBook is not particularly noteworthy. It's adequate insofar as it looks, but nothing about it really stands out for design aesthetics. Your mileage may vary. Most fans will be best served by simply saving a few dollars and purchasing the wide release, but of course packaging collectors will want to add this to their libraries, even if it's not the nicest looking SteelBook on the market.
