All Night Long Blu-ray Movie Review

1976’s “All Night Long” is a tale about a competition. There are no feats of strength or speed, as endurance is the goal presented here, exploring an eventful evening for two men looking to achieve a special award for most pleasure shared in a matter of hours. It’s a simple concept from co- writer/director Alan Colberg, but it mostly connects in the feature, which intends to provide bits of silliness to go along with the usual in adult entertainment. Perhaps suspense isn’t really the point of “All Night Long,” but a certain level of energy is presented throughout the viewing experience, following the developments of a particularly hurried night of carnal delights and the rowdiness of the group assembled to watch them vie for a special title bestowed to only one man per year.

It's celebration time for the Home and Hearth Association, who’ve assembled for the 4th Annual Golden Rod Awards. The organization is devoted to the “satisfaction of men,” welcoming members from around the area to celebrate the finest sexual achievements of the past year. Closing out the ceremony is a quest, as President Janie (Esther Walker) looks to crown the new “Golden Rod Mascot,” which involves an overnight race between two men tasked with pleasuring an assigned list of women as quickly as possible. Up for the title are John (John Holmes) and Ric (Ric Lutze), and they are ready to rumble, soon handed envelopes and access to their cars, tearing off to greet their assignments. As the men embark on their overnight adventure, the Hearth and Home group settles around a television, watching the quest unfold, getting riled up in the process as the sexual tone of the evening provides extra excitement. For John, interactions with a geisha and a dominatrix manage to sap the man of energy, threatening to slow him down at the very moment he needs speed. Ric faces a woman with special demands and a roleplaying mistress, also handling car breakdowns as he tries to make it to the finish line in time.

The Golden Rod Awards take up a good chunk of “All Night Long,” serving as an introduction to the Home and Hearth membership, who’ve gathered for a night of food and celebration, with the exception of one man, who chooses to complain about everything. There are other statues to hand out, putting Jack (Kevin Goodrum), the master of ceremonies, to work entertaining the crowd and keeping the show moving along. We meet Laurie (Kay Geddes), who claims a prize for “Most Promising Newcomer,” and there’s Sally (Rene Letona), who’s excited to take home a Golden Rod for “Artistic Merit.” Most curious are clips from these winning performances, which are pulled from other, seemingly random movies that have nothing to do with the actresses portraying the winners. Perhaps attention to detail wasn’t in the budget.

“All Night Long” stays lively during its first act, especially with Sally’s victory, as it triggers rage from nominee Terry (Bobbi Jewell), resulting in a little roughhousing, which delights the audience. Gerta (Lucy Coley) is singled out for her “Outstanding Courage and Devotion to Duty,” which isn’t as patriotic as it reads. The feature soon settles into its plot with John and Ric, two young(?) studs competing for the most prestigious award Home and Hearth has to offer, even meeting last year’s winner, who’s spent so much of 1975 in the company of women, he’s been rendered an old man. President Janie is happy to launch the sexual quest, though she declares a new approach for 1976, looking to focus on female satisfaction for a change, giving the contestants a fresh goal.

“All Night Long” eventually launches the race, sending John and Ric into the night, following instructions placed inside envelopes. The goal is to bed several women, keeping an eye on speed and pleasure. Colberg presents unique challenges during the hunt, as Ric is faced with a bedroom partner who demands multiple orgasms and John is forced to make sense of a geisha experience. Comedy is present in “All Night Long,” balancing between the sexual shenanigans of the competitors and the audience back at Home and Hearth, who whoop it up while watching the action, soon feeling the need to participate themselves as voyeuristic developments take over the guests.

The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation of "All Night Long" is listed as "newly scanned and restored in 2K" from its original 35mm camera negative. Source is fairly rough here, displaying significant wear and tear, lengthy scratches, and some jumpy frames. Detail reaches about as far as possible, exploring ample skin particulars on the cast, along with plenty of period hair. Interiors maintain dimension, especially at the awards dinner, which is packed with extras and decoration. Exteriors are limited but passably deep. Hues are vibrant at the celebration, which favors bold reds and blues. Costuming brings out varied looks as well, and hair color is distinct. Skin tones are natural. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is heavy and film-like.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA offers a straightforward understanding of dialogue exchanges, which are clear, only encountering brief moments of damage. Scoring supports with decent instrumentation, and a soundtrack selection maintains intelligible vocals.

"All Night Long" takes a turn into fetishes midway through the film, which is played for laughs (John is overwhelmed by the demands of a dominatrix) and iffiness (Ric meets a woman roleplaying as a child, complete with Peanuts bedsheets). Additional pressures are placed on the competitors as they try to finish the quest, allowing Colberg to maintain some variety to the couplings and offer a decent pace with physical and time challenges. "All Night Long" is entertaining and enjoyably weird, wisely choosing to move as fast as possible with a premise that encourages a slightly madcap tone.
