Overview

Aliens (1986)

Ellen Ripley, the sole survivor from the original "Alien", is awakened after 57 years of drifting through space. Her experiences with the deadly creatures are disbelieved by Company executives who inform her that the aliens' planet is now inhabited and colonized by humans. But contact has been lost with the colonists, and Ripley is convinced to return to the planet with a squad of marines, an android, and a Company executive with a mission of his own. Once there, no survivors can be found except for Newt, a little girl who awakens motherly instincts in Ripley just in time for the acid-blooded aliens to attack in what quickly becomes a one-sided battle for sheer survival.

Aliens Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman September 16, 2016

How much you like swag will probably end up determining whether you decide to purchase this 30th Anniversary Edition of James Cameron's Aliens, maybe even if it's not going to be a double dip. With this Aliens and this Aliens also readily available for at least a little less (and all basically repackagings of the original Aliens included in the review linked below), the "necessity" of this release for some fans will boil down to the accoutrements and the potential for a sole "new" extra, which is offered only as a digital download.

While we don't have reviews for any of the standalone editions of Aliens, my colleague Casey Broadwater covered the film and its siblings in his Alien Anthology Blu-ray review.

Aliens Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

For the video quality on this release, please see Casey's Alien Anthology Blu-ray review.

Aliens Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

For the audio quality on this release, please see Casey's Alien Anthology Blu-ray review.

Aliens Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

This release contains all of the supplements on the original Aliens release that Casey details in his Alien Anthology Blu-ray review. Additionally, there's a code to redeem at FoxExtras.com for a new James Cameron interview featurette. Try as I might, I could not get the site to recognize my redemption code (I even had an innocent bystander proofread my data entry, and it was correct), so I can't comment on the featurette.

This release comes housed in a sturdy chipboard slipcase with a slightly embossed image. Aside from the disc keepcase, there's also a folder containing art cards and an illustrated comic reprint. Some of the pictures accompanying this review are the art cards and pages from the comic.

Aliens Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

I'm kind of reading between the lines of Casey's review, since his scores are aggregates of the entire franchise he covered in his review. I've duplicated those scores above in terms of audio and video, but my "interpretation" based on Casey's comments with regard to Aliens in particular would be a 3.5 score for video. This release is all about the swag (especially if you can't get your "new" featurette redemption code to work--grrrr), and in that regard this new release has some nice artwork that some fans may enjoy. The film of course comes Highly recommended.
