You're going to need a taller shelf.

Reviewed by Justin Dekker December 10, 2024

Six of Alfred Hitchcock's best-known and most revered films return to 4K in this oversized book-style release of the limited edition 'Alfred Hitchcock: The Iconic Film Collection' courtesy of Universal. The six previously released 4K discs for 'Rear Window', 'To Catch a Thief', 'Vertigo', 'North by Northwest', 'Psycho', and 'The Birds' comprise the films included in this release. In addition to the films themselves, the discs contain all of the previous UHD legacy features and clock in at over 15 hours of further viewing. The oversized 38-page book is packed with information about the films, those who made them, and an assortment of stills, publicity photos, posters, and trivia. Blu-ray discs are not included, but a Digital Code redeemable through Movies Anywhere is. This release is limited to 5,150 units. For more information about the book-stye packaging and its contents, please scroll down to the 'Special Features and Extras' section.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Iconic Film Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

As with the Universal Classic Monsters: Limited Edition Collection which was released in February of 2024, this book is massive. Measuring approximately 14.5" by 10.5", the book is beautiful but could be a challenge for collectors to shelve with the rest of their Blu-ray and 4K disc collections. From the soft-touch finish of the covers which once again feature art from Tristan Eaton, to the thick glossy stock of the interior pages and the disc storage solution, it's a quality product. The cover sports Hitchcock's infamous profile. The features of his face are preserved, but the titles of the included films and stylized images from them fill the rest of the image with elements from Psycho and Rear Window being particularly eye-catching. Inside the book, after dedicating three pages to Hitch himself, one short page covers some famous leading men, with the facing page addressing iconic blonde leading ladies such as Tippi Hedron and Janet Leigh. Two pages dominated by costume sketches are devoted to Costume Designer Edith Head, with another two given to a collection of images of Film Title Designer Saul Bass's work. Composer Bernard Herrman is the focus of the last two pages before the book turns its attention to the films, at which point a clear formula is employed. The first two pages pertaining to each film provide a short synopsis of the film, the release date, a movie poster, a still, a bit of trivia, and a large image from the film. The next two pages showcase stills, movie posters, and other images, as well as a text box about how to spot Hitchcock's cameo in the film. The final page of the book is a biography of artist Tristan Eaton. As with the previous Universal Monsters release, the disc storage solution is found on the two thick bifold cardboard pages mounted inside the back cover. Once again the discs in this set are stored on pliable black plastic hubs mounted in special gloss-coated recesses. simply press in the center of them to release or replace the desired disc (please refer to the screencaps #5 and #12 to have a look). They effectively secure the discs while preventing any potential damage.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Iconic Film Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

The films have never looked better than they do on the discs included here, and the book-style packaging is certainly stunning. Its pages collect enough information and images to satisfy most film fans, and the larger size makes it a treat to peruse. I, for one, am a fan of these releases from Universal and am anxious to see what director or property will be next in the series. While all film fans have their favorites, the works included here are undeniably a collection of some of his very best and most influential films. Hitchcock fans who have yet to upgrade these films to 4K, or those looking for a more unique and distinctive presentation of them would do well to consider the limited edition Alfred Hitchcock: The Iconic Film Collection 4K. Very highly recommended.
