A Minecraft Movie 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Randy Miller III June 25, 2025

Released alongside the standard 4K edition, Warner Bros. offers a Steelbook combo pack variant of Richard Donner's 1987 classic Lethal Weapon. As is typically the case, the only differences here are cosmetic so it's aimed at die-hard fans and packaging collectors alike. It's also the only way to get both formats in one handy package.

For a light roast of the film (which my teenage daughter, a huge fan of the game, also didn't care for), please see my recent 4K review. As an olive branch, Brian Orndorf's theatrical coverage was a bit more positive.

Likewise, my thoughts on the Dolby Atmos audio can be found at the review linked above.

A Minecraft Movie 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

This one-disc release ships in matte-finish Steelbook packaging which, in my opinion, offers a solid upgrade over the relatively dull, cast-centric regular poster artwork but also isn't very true to what the film actually delivers. Regardless, it features a wrap-around array of non-human friends, enemies, and items from the Overworld and Nether set against a black background, with the familiar logo dead-center on the front cover. Inside, there's a herd of menacing Creepers and both discs sit on overlapping hubs on the right. Maybe not for all tastes, but I like this one quite a bit.

The extras below, which are identical to their standard-release counterparts, can be found on both discs.

  • Building the World of Minecraft: Block Party (14:18) - Mojang creative director Tori Frans Olafsson, producer Cale Boyter, director Jared Hess, production designer Grant Major, Jack Black, set decorator Amber Richards, and others talk about the unique challenges of bringing the world of Minecraft to life.

  • Creepers, Zombies and Endermen Oh My! (13:17) - Many of the same participants return for a like-minded chat about interpreting the game's famous (and not-so-famous) creatures via practical puppets and CGI.

  • A Minecraft Movie: Pixel Pals (13:56) - A look at the cast, from Jack Black and Jason Momoa's smoldering bromance to a private server set up for the actors to play Minecraft in their down time.

  • A Minecraft Movie: Block Beats (9:05) - The cast and crew pay tribute to Jack Black's musical talent.

  • Marlene + Nitwit (5:12) - Jared Hess and company give a tongue-in-cheek account of the romantic side story involving vice principal Marlene (Jennifer Coolidge) and a wayward Villager in the Overworld.

A Minecraft Movie 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

According to most figures, Minecraft is the most popular game of all time, even toppling decades-old giants like Tetris, Mario, Grand Theft Auto, and Pac-Man. With that in mind, even a two-hour "Let's Play" delivered to theaters would've generated loads of ticket sales and, while A Minecraft Movie isn't that lazy, it's lazy in a totally different way. Featuring a bland story and characters focus-grouped within an inch of their lives, it's an uncreative end result for a game built on creativity. That said, the separate wide-release 4K and Blu-ray options are fine enough for curious newcomers and casual fans, while this attractive Steelbook includes both formats and makes it the best option for collectors.
