While there may be some curmudgeonly naysayers proclaiming it’s all a massive lie, I am now willing to announce that there may indeed be some kind of Divine Being who listens to oft repeated prayers, and in fact chooses (if only occasionally and perhaps randomly) to answer them. Case in point: after years of complaining about various Madea releases, and hoping against hope the series would finally come to some kind of an end, Tyler Perry has decided to bid adieu to one of his most famous characters, though whether or not that turns out to be an actual firm response or merely a passing fancy subject to revision (and/or resurrection) remains to be seen.
A Madea Family Funeral is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.85:1. Perry's films almost always have completely competent technical merits, and this is another generally great looking transfer, though it's perhaps more obvious than in some other Perry films how studio bound this particular effort is. Some outdoor material pops quite winningly, but much of the interior work, while offering commendable levels of detail, can look just a bit on the drab side, without any really vivid pops in the palette. Fine detail is often inviting on elements like some ribbed sweater fabrics or even some of the weird makeup Perry wears to help create some of the characters.
A Madea Family Funeral features a nicely immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, one which benefits from Perry's typical use of underscore and actual music within the film's story itself. Dialogue is presented cleanly and clearly throughout, though occasionally in the hustle bustle of Perry's sometimes contentious overlapping dialogue it can be a bit hard to make individuals out clearly, something that the optional subtitles can aid in deciphering.
If you're a Madea fan, you know what you're going to get in this enterprise, and Perry delivers faithfully. If you're not a Madea fan, why start now? (Yes, that's a joke.) Technical merits are solid for those considering a purchase.
