Overview

A Better Tomorrow Trilogy 4K (1986-1989)

A death-hardened cop battles the Hong Kong underworld, including his own brother, who joins the bad guys and his former partner in crime. This progenitor of Woo's "heroic violence" films introduces the theme of loyalties between men shattered by a violent world that forces them apart. Only through sacrifice can honor be attained.

A Better Tomorrow Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Stephen Larson January 23, 2026

The three films in Shout! Studios' A Better Tomorrow Trilogy have been reviewed individually. The numeric scores that I have assigned to each category are the mean scores for the whole collection. To read reviews of each title, please click on the links below:

1. A Better Tomorrow

2. A Better Tomorrow II

3. A Better Tomorrow III: Love and Death in Saigon

Disc Seven (Blu-ray) – Bonus Disc

  • Long-Lost A Better Tomorrow Workprint (2:21:39, 1080p; Cantonese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono) - Shout! provides a long prefatory note about how and where this workprint was uncovered. It offers over a half hour of additional material. The workprint is "raw" in the sense that the picture hasn't underwent any restoration work. (The contrast shifts from scene to scene.) The sound, however, has been fully remastered. It is truly a revelation to have this extra footage finally available. Shout! has prepped a brand-new track of English subtitles.
  • Taiwanese Cut of A Better Tomorrow III (2:09:57, 1080p; Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono) - this longer version incorporates ten minutes of additional footage that's not in the theatrical cut. A handful of deleted scenes initially appeared on Asian DVDs and the HK Kam & Ronson Enterprises Blu-ray. In 2023 T&G Vision Film and Cargo Records released the Taiwanese version on Blu-ray in Germany. The added inserts don't appear like native SD that's been upscaled to HD. The rediscovered footage is pretty high quality. Shout! has provided optional English subtitles.

A Better Tomorrow Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  5.0 of 5

Final words for each of the three movies in the set can be found in the individual reviews, linked above. The bountiful supplements and alternate cuts for the sequel and prequel make this set a MUST OWN!
