7 Seeds Blu-ray Movie Review

7 Seeds: Part 2 continues the action-packed science-fiction drama by expanding the narrative of the series. The second part of the series has the concluding arc. The series is an original production first available on streaming from Netflix. The series animation is produced by GONZO (Strike Witches, Afro Samurai). Created by Yumi Tamura, 7 Seeds: Part 2 provides the conclusion of the series for the fan-favorite animated program.

After the beginning of a dangerous new terrain on planet Earth, the survivors of the apocalypse must now work together to face new challenges in the dangerous jungles. Natsu Iwashimizu (Nao Tōyama), Arashi Aota (Jun Fukuyama), Botan Saotome (Yoko Soumi), and Semimaru Asai (Katsuyuki Konishi), alongside other survivors, must face new challenges with “Team A” and “Team B” becoming the foreground for survival. The teams might cause more division than hope – and that could be the ultimate dealbreaker for surviving.

The 7Seeds participants find themselves surround by giant and otherworldly creatures – both plants and bugs. The environment becomes more fatal than ever before and the stakes are even higher for these participants. Who will be capable of surviving the challenges ahead?

The characters remain one of the core reasons for the success of the program. The central cast of characters is expansive and the cast have plenty of opportunities to shine. The characters have distinctive qualities and there is plenty for audiences to find compelling here.

The animation is one of the most distinctive qualities. The art style is well suited for the science fiction genre underpinnings. The art direction by Yusuke Ikeda (The Orbital Children, Chronos Ruler) explores the landscape of the apocalyptic setting. The animation is colorful and beautiful while still showcasing the environmental settings well.

The series benefits from strong character designs by Youko Satou (Dog & Scissors, Saiyuki Reload Blast). The character designs fit the respective protagonists well. These strong design attributes help for the cast of characters to stand out more from the crowded sea of animation. Satou has a solid grasp on these characters and what was needed within the animation.

The cinematography by Shigeki Asakawa (Samurai Girls, Attack on Titan: The Final Season) is lush and beautiful looking and the effort is more intriguing in the second half of the saga. The creative style of Asakawa is something that fits the science-fiction elements of the production. A solid effort for the production.

The score by MICHIRU (Mitsuboshi Colors, Ascendance of a Bookworm) provides some action-packed fun for the program. The music certainly aids the filmmaking and provides a solid backdrop for the genre elements. The score finds ways to explore the characters and their respective journeys on the series.

Written by Touko Machida (A Centaur's Life, Is This a Zombie?), 7 Seeds: Part 2 pushes the envelope for the series. The second half finds new ways to explore the story and make the events of the program more complex. The saga has some dramatic moments and screenwriter Machida understands how fundamental these components are to the backdrop of the production.

Directed by Yukio Takahashi (Dog & Scissors, The Prince of Tennis), 7 Seeds: Part 2 brings the series to its finale. The saga has plenty of twists and turns and audiences are taken on a wild ride. Takahashi might not make 7 Seeds the best animated series around but it is a decent one and fans of the series will be appreciative of the journey.

Arriving on Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks, 7 Seeds: Part 2 is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original streaming aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The release has a solid and compelling encode. The video quality is generally solid on the release. The set does have some issues with banding, though. The set is on par with the release of part one and the first half of the season. These banding issues might be source related for the content (as provided by Netflix) as it is not a common issue with Sentai.

7 Seeds Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo (with English subtitles). The lossless audio works well and makes the experience more enjoyable. The sound quality is generally solid with good dynamics. A worthwhile audio encode. Dialogue is clear and is easy to understand.

7 Seeds Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

The release has a small supplemental package. Unfortunately, the release does not provide as many bonus features as some other Netflix animated series available on Blu-ray (such as Castlevania – a production with a more robust supplemental package available on disc). The extras are as follows:

7 Seeds: Part 2 provides the conclusion to the science-fiction action-adventure animated series. The production has plenty of exciting adventure. The Netflix series is brought to its resolution. Fans of the series will undoubtedly want to see where it ends. Newcomers should start at the beginning before diving in to the second half of the series as the first half establishes the program. Screenwriter Touko Machida (A Centaur's Life) amps up the action. Director Yukio Takahashi (The Prince of Tennis) expands on the production and its science-fiction elements. Fans of the Netflix program will find the release worthwhile and a nice addition to their Blu-ray collection. While not a perfect series, fans will be pleased to see the conclusion. Recommended.
