2 Guns 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman August 29, 2023

Universal has released the 2013 film '2 Guns,' starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, to the UHD format. New specifications include 2160p/HDR video and DTS:X audio. Several new extras are also on the UHD disc, 'new' meaning that they where not included in the previous Blu-ray. The included Blu-ray is identical to the original 2013 release.

Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in the explosive action hit '2 Guns.' When an attempt to take down a drug cartel blows up in their faces, two undercover operatives are forced to go on the run together, though neither knows that the other is a federal agent. Suddenly, everyone on both sides of the law wants them dead, and their only hope is to trust each other.

2 Guns 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

The included screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray disc.

The previous and decade-old Blu-ray release of 2 Guns looked great, and it still looks solid today. Ken Brown called that transfer "a killer...video presentation that rarely, if ever, disappoints." The same can be said of this upgraded 2160p/HDR UHD presentation. Like the previous issue, there is an attractive film-like veneer at work here that is very organic and pleasing to the eyes. Grain is true and satisfying for its consistency of density and hold to a true cinematic styling. Details are excellent. capturing essentials and minor background elements alike with a depth and clarity that is a step or two beyond the Blu-ray. Sharpness is, overall, amplified, and the depth of facial pores and hairs, clothing materials, and the like enjoy a nice, solid gain over the existing 1080p image. The HDR color grading offers pleasing adds to depth and vibrance. The image here is a shade darker but the colors are also much more pleasantly refined. Subtle grading differences are apparent in every shot, but there are also some more significant gains to punch, depth, and accuracy, especially on punchy clothes, vivid fireballs, and skin tones. Whites are far more vivid, even if they do not reach format zenith. Black level depth is terrific and a clear step ahead of the Blu-ray. The image shows no real concerns for source blemishes or encode failures. This is a very nice looking UHD from Universal. It's not a showstopper on the format by any stretch of the imagination, but it does bring with it a solid upgrade from the old Blu-ray.

2 Guns 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

Universal's fresh DTS:X soundtrack for 2 Guns offers a wonderful listen that improves upon the more standard configuration 5.1 track from the previous Blu-ray. The track finds a greater fullness through good and steady, though not overly amplified, usage of the added channels at its disposal. the surround back channels help to bring a larger environmental flow and fill to the listening area while the overhead channels carry a few minor discrete effects but largely aid in creating that larger, more robust sonic immersion. Clarity is excellent to all elements, including music, action, ambience, and dialogue. The subwoofer offers powerful, but balanced, support to music and action in particular. Musical fidelity is excellent with balanced stage engagement, including primary front left and right channel output. Dialogue is clear and centered for the duration.

2 Guns 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Universal has done right by 2 Guns on the UHD format. The new 2160p/HDR video is very good, as is the new DTS:X soundtrack. It's a treat to see the studio add some new extras that were not included on the original Blu-ray. Recommended.
