A siege horror loaded with brutal impalement and credible heroes.
4 Stars
A siege horror loaded with brutal impalement and credible heroes.
For such an over-the-top gorefest, the characters are written surprisingly credibly. So we get to enjoy awesome deaths galore (on a budget) and protagonists who do things that actually make sense. I’d call that a win for director Joe Begos. The world has crumbled and law enforcement has retreated from the cities as a new opioid crisis-era drug’s hold on its addicts has created a very fledgling-stage Escape from New York (1981) every man for himself way of life. Riots flood the city streets as our drug dealer (Travis Hammer; Dominion) sprawls across a lounge chair bare-chested under his heavily spiked leather jacket. A drug addict storms his lair only to be impaled in the head by a machete at the hands of his very Doomsday (2008)-chic underboss Gutter (Dora Madison; Bliss, Exists). Crème de la crème, right?Meanwhile, hanging out at their local VFW, Fred (Stephen Lang; Don’t Breathe, The Monkey’s Paw), Walter (William Sadler; The Grudge, Tales from the Crypt S1, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, Ava’s Possessions), Abe (Fred Williamson; From Dusk till Dawn), Thomas (George Wendt; House, Bliss, Family), Lou (Martin Kove; The Last House on the Left, Cobra Kai) and Doug (David Patrick Kelly; The Crow, Twin Peaks, Dreamscape) heckle each other as veteran’s do, drinking away their worries with oft-one-too-many.When a woman scrambles into the VFW being chased by numerous strung-out drug addicts, our veterans face a new war on their home turf. And once the violence kicks off, it’s exceptional. A head explodes on-screen to shotgun rounds, people are impaled by blood-geysering axes, a head gets stomped into bloody chunky pulp, and dismemberment abounds. The on-screen impalements are awesomely numerous. It plays out a lot like an organized zombie siege or like Feast (2005) with humans instead of actual monsters, as the hypers (the people addicted to the drug Hype) recklessly storm the VFW bar.Movies often do a lot of glory-lighting veterans for the sake of it. But in this movie, I find it more credible. These battle-seasoned veterans make some practical decisions and make rational plans to get the job done. They are far from perfect and they know it. They aren’t looking for the best plan, but a fast plan, because time is not on their side when one of their own is mortally injured. Even when things look hopeless and they know it, these guys keep it together and muster their best. The low budget is most evident when our eyes wander to the sets or notice the occasional guerilla camerawork, and when the action gets crazy it gets a little clunky. But all this is quite forgivable considering the fun to be had with these gory action sequences. The deaths are brutal. I particularly enjoyed the flagpole down the throat. Director Joe Begos (The Mind’s Eye, Bliss) certainly has an eye for the shocking and brutal.I guess I shouldn’t be surprised considering the experience of the cast (including a lot of action and horror), but these veteran characters were surprisingly likable even considering their deliberately written flaws. They cared about each other and always aimed for the solution to get everyone out alive, no matter how unlikely. These guys are the Hudson and Vasquez of siege horror.

The actors are all top notch, the story is coherent and clear (but not complicated, but not designed to be). There is a lot of gore and splatter and lots of death, but a lot of fun to watch. If you expect philosophical diatribe or an undercurrent of themes and hidden meanings you will be disappointed. If you want a fun well acted blood fest this is for you.

The movie was entertaining, very dark so hard to see alot going. Fast pace so there is no real story, its gory, and has a good set of stars from 80's throwback. Simaliar to assault on precint 13, people trying to protect from an invading force. Its worth the watch but not sure if I'd buy it to own it.

Warning to those who are considering purchasing the 4K Disc version of this film. It is a very basic 4K Blu-ray disc...meaning that there is NO HDR of any kind or Dolby Vision, lol, during the presentation. I think they just put the DVD version on to a 4K disc. I admire them for keeping up with the new technologies of the times but c'mon. Doing that will make the film look very grainy and the colors will be dull, hence why HDR is needed. But, it gives it a gritty and grainy look to its' grindhouse atmosphere of the film. The movie is great! It is low budget but it looks great in the way it is shot and edited. All actors in this film were great. The story has been done over and over but we will watch this movie for the main stars and they don't disappoint. The side actors do a good job also. I want to check out the director's other film "Bliss" after watching this movie. Warning to those who are squeamish...this film is very violent and graphic. So, if you think this movie is about some vets playing bingo at their VFW...it is NOT that film. If the Blu-ray package is cheaper than the 4K disc version, just go with the cheaper priced one. Heck, just get the DVD version which would be fine.

Watched Bliss. Awesome movie also. I like this director!!!

The dialogue needed some tuning up as well as some character development, but otherwise... It was fair. It was better the second time around. Also, it's not nearly as dark as all these crybabies keep whining about. Personally, I suspect their televisions require some color and sharp adjustments. Regardless, it's a fair movie with an interesting premise. There's nothing new here beside the location. A VFW was a pretty good idea, but not well executed. It's not a great movie, but it's just above fair.

VFW is filled to the brim with B-Movie, schlocky gore and action...and it is amazing. It's like one part Cheers and two parts (the original) Assault On Precinct 13, with a healthy dose of splattery goodness added into the mix.
The casting choices were spectacular across the board and the story plays out in such a way as to be truly captivating all the way through.

Didn't watch a trailer or read anything about the movie. Loved it. Ridiculous plot, some good old B movie actors, action and an actually compelling and coherent story line. A lot of the 80s nostalgia stuff kind of gets old since it's so common but these guys did it right.

Bliss director Joe Begos’ latest flick takes place in a very near future where a highly addictive drug called “hype” has turned it’s users into violent addicts and city streets into war zones. Inside one of those war zones lives Viet Nam war veteran Fred (Stephen Lang) who runs a VFW hall where his friends and fellow soldiers Walter (William Sadler), Abe (Fred Williamson), Thomas (George Wendt), Lou (Martin Kove) and Doug (David Patrick Kelly) hang out. One night a young woman called Lizard (Sierra McCormick) steals some hype from drug dealer Boz (Travis Hammer), to get revenge on Boz for killing her sister (Linnea Wilson). On the run from Boz and his gang, Lizard runs into the VFW hall for cover. Still men of honor, Fred and the other veterans vow to protect Lizard as Boz, his thugs and an army of frantic hype addicts lay siege to the VFW hall.

Flick is basically John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 on crack as directed by Begos from a script by Matthew McArdle and Max Brallier. That is in no way a bad thing, as this is a bloody blast of an action flick as the war veterans take on an army of zoned-out drug addicts and a psychotic gang of thugs. We are treated to spurting blood, flying limbs and exploding heads, as the war vets use guns, axes and a host of homemade booby traps and weapons to keep the vicious gang at bay. It’s fast paced, though not enough that we don’t get to know this endearing bunch of men who never stopped being soldiers at heart. That is what makes this click all the better, is that despite all the fast and furious action, Begos lets the script’s messages about respecting and honoring those who have served, shine through. One of the very few issues with the flick is that the army of crazed drug addicts seems to come and go at the needs of the script, instead of consistently laying siege to the VFW hall. They disappear conveniently when the film needs a quiet moment for our characters to regroup. Other than that, Begos accomplishes a lot on a small budget, delivers the blood and action and has assembled a great cast of veteran actors to play his aged warriors…

…and how can you not like this cast!…Stephan Lang makes his Fred a world weary yet still honorable and strong man, one who still has nobility and honor. Sadler makes for a very likable Walter, a good-natured man who remembers the days of war as a time of loyalty and friends made. Williamson still kicks butt as the tough yet somewhat mellowing Abe and Martin Kove is solid as the business man of the group, car salesman Lou. Lou is the only one wanting to “deal” with Boz and his gang to save his own skin. Wendt and Kelly are also likable as grizzled vets Thomas and Doug, who still have their senses of humor about them. As our bad guys, Travis Hammers is a bit weak as Boz. He’s more sleazy than scary or intimidating, but he isn’t a hinderance to the blood soaked fun. Making up for it is Bliss’ Dora Madison as gang member Gutter. She’s ruthless, vicious and deadly and probably should have been the main villain…just sayin’. Any girl that takes on Fred “The Hammer” Williamson is not to be taken lightly. Rounding out is Tom Williamson (All Cheerleaders Die ) as a young vet named Shawn who wanders into the hall just home from the Middle East, Sierra McCormick (Some Kind of Hate), who is solid as the tough Lizard and Begos regular Graham Skipper as Boz’s brother, Roadie. A good cast.

Overall, this was a blood-soaked blast of a good time that manages to not only be bloody entertaining, but heartfelt about how we should view our war veterans. It’s got a lot of bloody action, but doesn’t move too fast that we don’t endear to these grizzled vets. It has some well rendered and plentiful gore, a great John Carpenter-esque score by Steve Moore and some effective cinematography by Mike Testin. All in all, it might be the most fun you’ll have at a bloodbath in quite some time. Flick is available on Amazon Prime and definitely worth the rental!

If you love good old B rated horror/action type movies this is for you. It's reminiscent of Assault on Precinct 13 but extra blood. I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would. Action, violence and lots of blood made for a very worthwhile watch.
