Product Description

High octane sci-fi action movie with all-out, guns-blazing, bone-crushing, explosives-laden action. Based on the popular comic book character JUDGE DREDD.

The future America is an irradiated wasteland. On its East Coast lies Mega City One - a vast violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called "Judges" who possess the combined powers of judge jury and instant executioner. The ultimate Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is tasked with ridding the city of its latest scourge -a dangerous drug and the sadistic prostitute turned drug pusher who is using it to take over the city.

Amazon.com

Though few moviegoers queued up to see it, Pete Travis's Dredd is, like its titular hero, a tough, effective piece of action machinery with a single purpose: to fill the screen with as much eye-popping visual mayhem as possible. Based on the iconic British comic series Judge Dredd, which was previously adapted as the 1995 Sylvester Stallone vehicle of the same name, Dredd hews closer to its source material in its depiction of a postapocalyptic world reduced to anarchy and the police force known as the Judges, who try, convict, and execute criminals in one fell swoop. Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Lord of the Rings) is terrifically effective as Dredd, a monosyllabic force of nature dispatched to halt the manufacture of an addictive and disorienting narcotic called "Slo-Mo" by the vicious drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey). With judge-in-training Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) in tow, Dredd works his way up Ma-Ma's 200-story tower stronghold, facing off against her minions as well as corrupt Judges in a barrage of elaborately violent action set pieces. Much of what sets Dredd apart from other comic book and science fiction-action features--the obsessive, brutal focus of its protagonist and the relentlessly bleak environment of the film's setting, Mega City-One--may also be off-putting for viewers who appreciate some grey areas or levity in their entertainment (though that's not to say that Dredd doesn't have its own flinty sense of humor).

But Travis's approach should appeal to both fans of the original comic as well as those who favor a vision of the future on the darkly dystopian side, à la Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop and John Carpenter's Escape from New York. Karl Urban acquits himself well to Dredd's steely single-mindedness, expressing an unyielding sense of righteousness in a helmet that obscures nearly all of his features; Thirlby and Headey are also fine as strong, forthright female characters on either side of Dredd's moral compass. The single-disc Blu-ray includes both the standard and 3-D versions of the film, with the latter option avoiding some of the vertigo-inducing effects of digital 3-D while also offering the best showcase for the extraordinary "Slo Mo" sequences. Extras include a solid, introductory featurette on the history of the Dredd character via interviews with, among others, its creators John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, and an overview of the picture's visual effects and 3-D process with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle. A brief motion comic outlines the back story for Ma-Ma, while the remainder of the supplements are devoted to electronic press kit coverage of the set design and Dredd's array of equipment, among others. A digital copy and UltraViolet stream/download round out the disc. --Paul Gaita

A violently underrated cult classic.

A violently underrated cult classic.
Given the maligned reputation of Sylvester Stallone film Judg Dredd back in the 1995. It's no surprise that this film had no chance of success at the box office. That is the tragedy of this because the film is amazing. It took a basic plot and found a way to make it work perfectly by cranking the violence to an 11. The performance by everyone including Karl Urban as Dredd was amazing. Dredd that I know of in the graphic novel never takes off his helmet. Sylvester Stallone in the 95 film claimed he wanted to humanize the character by showing his face. I call B.S I think ego was involved here and he didn't like the idea of his face being covered the whole time. Karl Urban the true professional he is knew the character he knew that Dredd is the faceless symbol of the law. By leaving the mask on he's the boogeyman the criminals fear because they don't have a face to look at and his feats make him look mythological. The violence here is definitely not something certain younger audience should see so be warned. It definitely got popular a few years later after it's release back in 2012. But the studio definitely dropped the ball not taking advantage that the film was more successful in its physical release than theatrical. A sequel would've become successful and I believe it still would. Check this film out you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm 62. I look around today at what is going on. All the perversion, what's happening to our kids, our Society. THIS, this right here is the Justice we need today. Our Society is sick. Judge Dredd? Well, someone like Dredd would be cure. I have watched all of that is happening unfold right before my eyes. Dredd would be a gift from God himself.
Now, I'm 62 and I have seen ALL of the Stallone movies. I like Stallone, don't get me wrong. However THIS Dredd is FAR BETTER than Stallone. Jesus this was a wild ride! I cannot believe negative reviews. Must be people easily triggered. Poor babies. LOL This is an AWESOME ride man! A sequel? YES! Need a petition going. It's insane this did not get a sequel and more insane the movie does not get the credit due it. Yes, I agree with the POSITIVE REVIEWS! THIS MOVIE ROCKS TO THE CORE! The woman Judge is hot, yes? LOL God would even likes this movie!

Karl Urban having been Judge Dredd before becoming Billy Butcher in the Amazon Prime™️ series “The Boys” (based off the Comic series by Garth Ennis & Darrick Robertson!) is enough vindication alone for his career as a character actor that was not quite there as a “Movie Star”. He not only nails the role and the acting from within his helmet…but he’s now and forever THE Judge Dredd!

Olivia Thirlby also did an excellent job as Judge Cassandra Anderson and I always found it a shame she didn’t go on to be a bigger name actress after first seeing her in Juno and The Wackness!

Alex Garland was ROBBED by Lionsgate of a proper Director’s credit (because he shot most of the film) and a PROPER marketing effort that didn’t emphasize the film’s 3D screenings when most folks didn’t really like it AND many theaters were being denied 2D Prints of the movie! Such a shame…

…because it means we were robbed of the opportunity to do The Dark Judges storyline as told by the master storyteller Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days/Weeks/Years Later, Sunshine, Annihilation, Devs, etc.)!

Dredd is such an underrated fun ride (if you don't mind blood and goo). I have this movie on Blu-ray disk which I have watched several times. Last year, I purchased the Panasonic DP-UB9000 featuring terrific 4K upscaling processing. When I played Dredd on the new player, the picture clarity and textures were impressive. New life found in an aging favorite. In 02/2025 the UHD-HDR disk price dropped dramatically, and I thought why not upgrade again. Watching it last night, here is what improved compared to the Blu-ray upscaled experience: the surround sound and color, and this is about it. Picture clarity of the 4K UHD vs. Panasonic Blu-Ray Upscaled was a wash, meaning some close-ups were sharper in 4K UHD, and yet other scenes seemed crisper with the Blu-Ray upscaled by my player.

I love the Sylvester Stallone version of Judge Dredd, its a cult classic. Karl Urban was also made to play Judge Dredd. This movie was awesome, lots of action and some other familiar faces as well. We need a sequel to this with more Karl!

I like Sly. He's done some good work in his years. I don't think he's a good actor per say, but a lot of his films are fun to watch.

Judge Dredd, is not one of those films. It's one of the worst, if not the worst, film he's ever made. This is -not- a remake or reboot of that film. It intentionally had nothing to do with it and was made to correct the offense that film was for fans of Judge Dredd, which is a comic book.

It get's everything right. The bad one liners, the hyper violent gore, and everything about this film is exactly what it should be. This was made by a fan of the character who knows the source material and did a wonderful job bringing it to life. The absence of the SF cuss "Drokk" is notable, but easily ignored. It doesn't appear in every issue of the comic, so it's not out of place that he doesn't say it in the film. Would have been a nice nod to fans to put it in there though, but this film does enough right that it's easily forgiven.

It's perfectly okay to not like the film, but people should understand that the film is exactly what it supposed to be, what it should be, in every way. This is what Judge Dredd is and how he should be portrayed. If you didn't like it, it's not because there's something wrong with the film. It's because you're not a fan of this character, because this movie gets everything right.

Judge Dredd is a comic book that was published in the British Anthology series 2000 AD and was first in it's pages in 1977 in the second issue of the anthology. He was written as an even more extreme and futuristic version of Harry Callahan from the Dirty Harry series, and his character was modeled after the leather clad biker on the Deathrace 2000 movie poster. He's essentially the Punisher with a badge and legal authority, and not the nice Thomas Jane version.

He's not Sylvester Stallone, was never intended to be, and does not ever take his helmet off. In the original comic even when he's shown at home in his off time he's wearing it. He did remove it in one issue, but the reader never sees his face, and the people in the comic that do are horrified and disgusted, to the point of being violently sick.

He's essentially a political satire from the 1970s. An extreme example pointing out the perceived flaws of the British justice system in the period. The comic became popular in the 80s and has been going strong ever since. Dredd is probably the most famous comic British comic book character in the world.

This film was made by a fan of that comic with a deep love and understanding of the source. They knew what they were doing, got so many details right, and this is without doubt one of the best comic book adaptions ever made. Sin City is possibly the only film I can think of that does better, and that's because it's word for word and frame for frame the same as the comic. Every panel in Sin City is a frame in the film version.

Reviewers that don't like it because it's violent, gory, brutish, and crude are making valid criticisms. If you're not into that sort of thing you're not going to like this film. Avoid it. Though, why someone who doesn't like those things is watching an R rated action film is beyond me. I'm left wondering what they were expecting it to be exactly.

However, the hundreds of people who seem to think this is a bad remake of a Sly Stallone film are simply ignorant and should be ignored. This was intentionally made to have nothing to do with that film and was created to make up for everything that movie got wrong for fans of the character. It accomplished that amazingly well.

This movie gets five stars from me. It's exactly what a comic book adaption should be. It's extremely true to the source material, and gets the details right. As a fan of the original comic, this film blew me away. It's a better comic adaption than anything put out by Marvel or DC in the last ten years. Not necessarily a better movie and certainly not a more popular one, but as an adaption that isn't word for word and frame for frame the same as the original comic, it's as true to the source as a comic book movie adaption can possible to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gran película, sin pretensiones que vale la pena en 3D
Reviewed in Spain on October 15, 2015
