Product Description

A team of parapsychologists sets out to investigate a series of anomalous phenomena taking place in a newly occupied apartment. Telephone calls with no caller, mysterious shadows, extraordinary light emissions, flying objects, and exploding light bulbs, are some of the events they will face while recording their every step with state-of-the-art technology. Using infra-red filming, digital photography, psych phonic recordings, movement detectors, and magnetic field alteration meters, the group's attempts to contact the 'other side' will grow increasingly dangerous as they near a point of no return...

this movie got me a few times.
  • Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2012
I've been watching a lot of this "style" of film, and I have to say that this one is pretty good. It was different from the rest, which made it stand out. There was a decent creep-factor, enough to make me jump at times. The characters were not the gung-ho "paranormal researchers"; it's kind of hard to describe, but they were not as "showy" as in other movies. The plot was simple enough: Psychologist and team were called in to examine the situation happening to a widower and his children. Strange stuff started happening shortly after wife's death and intensified. Dad and kids move to Apartment 143, and scary stuff follows. Team does the standard camera and sensor install, and stays with the family for the duration of the process of trying to get to the root of the problems. Weird stuff starts almost as soon as they get there. The direction that the movie takes is a bit different, as the researchers come to believe that it's less of a haunting than it is psychic phenomena. The drama unfolds and you learn more and more about the troubled family. The end of the story was a bit dramatic, and the last scene was unexpected...a final shock to the system...and leaves you with more than a few questions. It adds to the movie, though, and doesn't take away. I've seen plenty of B- and even C- horror movies, and I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5. Wasn't perfect, but was just different enough to make it unique. I'd probably watch it again if I was bored.

Ehhh. Well I'm sure if you watch movies and look at horror movies that have been made in the last 10-15 years.. This one is just like the others. Starting with the Blair Witch, all these movies try too hard to make you think that this is a true story and prove so because they used a camcorder. I'm only ranting because if they used half the production costs to make great horror movies as they spend on these cookie cutter action flicks starring The Rock, maybe the fan could have more to gush about and actually buy the movie. Instead we have this.. A movie where they spent like 5k and hired what looks like the guy they called "Spanish" from Oldschool to hook up "ghost tech" all around an apartment. From there things pop out of nowhere and will make your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, etc. jump all over the place! That alone makes it fun to watch. But regardless, I'm hoping for the future. No more camcorders please. Watch this movie because its free on amazon prime and you've already watched everything that your old college a/v club couldn't make.

Scared the crap out of me - for a movie like this, that's a ringing endorsement.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this piggybacks on the handheld-camera-ghost-story genre and it borrows the plot of the psychic researchers who arrive to investigate a haunting.

What worked, for me, were the intermittent shocks, alternating with ordinary scenes of family life; the realistically fraught relationship between father and teenage daughter, and the minimalist, even gritty photography. Sometimes the uncanny details are very subtle, such as a picture that is discovered to have been turned upside down.

There are also several raw and convincing performances, by the daughter; by the small son; by the medium who's brought in late in the film, and most powerfully, by the father, who convinced me at first that he was confused and lost, and later convinced me that he had reason to withhold some information about his wife's recent death.

Also, though Michael O'Keeffe is wooden (as usual) as the principal investigator, the other two ghost hunters are intriguingly unstereotyped and fresh - a young Latino photographer and a young Irish woman who develops a lovely relationship with the family's small son, who is intrigued by these strange people who have entered the house and too little to know what's going on.

The movie is not violent or sexually exploitative - that earns points from me. It's character-driven, revealing some possible reasons for the complicated relationship between father and daughter, and while it answers some questions about why the phenomena are happening, it doesn't try to tie up all the loose ends.

The movie's occasional shocks, often done with a few-frame shot, were very effective, IMHO.

This English-language movie appears to have been created and produced in Catalonia, though the setting purports to be somewhere in the US. I found the subtly foreign elements (the look of the apartment and of some of the characters) in the story intriguing because they deviated nicely from horror-movie cliche.

I love scary movies. Not just horror movies or those with a bunch of gore but the ones that make you want to check under your bed or in your closet like you did when you were a kid! This one didn't even come close. I found myself drifting off into wonderland or even balancing my checkbook while watching. Boring! In total, there may have been about 8 to 9 seconds of actual SCARE. Oh and don't get me started on the acting. I've sat through a lot of "B-movies" but this one completely reminded me of the type of "acting" that takes place in adult films. Cheesy to say the least. But hey! You gotta decide for yourself. Maybe you'll find it entertaining. I would worry if you do though. You might possibly need a doctor to check and make sure your neurons are still firing upstairs : )

    Hallo,

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok but not great
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 1, 2013
Apartment 143 is a horror film about a family in a small apartment by an angry ghost. A research team try to investigate and stop the threat. Story wise it's nothing special, although it does have a few good tricks up it's sleeve.

In many ways the film is reminiscent of Paranormal Activity, it's not as slick, but does have it's good points. It feels rawer and as such has a bit more impact. What it does lack is characters that you feel for. The dad and the daughter give it the old college try, but ultimately they fall flat.

What is does get right is the atmosphere. It feels claustrophobic and has a few creepy moments, making good use of the research team's equipment set up. It's not enough to save the film, but does stop it being a complete waste.

Overall it's ok, but nothing special.

The cover of the disc is misleading(l thought it a proper horror film!!),it's another one of those dreadful paranormal films.a group of paranormal investigators watch a family who are suppose to be bein haunted etc you see nowt(the cast are personality free, none likeable) its certainly not what l call entertaining. If you feel depressed don't watch this ,you will after watching this rubbish.
