THE ICONIC GENDER-EXPLODING ROCK SENSATION AND ENDURING CULT CLASSIC FROM JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL
On Blu-ray for the first time
With this trailblazing musical, writer-director-star John Cameron Mitchell and composer-lyricist Stephen Trask brought their signature creation from stage to screen for a movie as unclassifiable as its protagonist. Raised a boy in East Berlin, Hedwig (Mitchell) undergoes a traumatic personal transformation in order to emigrate to the U.S., where she reinvents herself as an “internationally ignored” but divinely talented rock diva, characterized by Mitchell as inhabiting a “beautiful gender of one.” The film tells Hedwig’s story through her music, an eclectic assortment of original punk anthems and power ballads by Trask, and moments of bracing emotional realism. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a tribute to the transcendent power of rock and roll.
Director-Approved Special Edition Features
- New 4K digital restoration
- New conversation among members of the cast and crew
- New programs exploring Hedwig's creation, look, and legacy
- Deleted scenes with commentary by John Cameron Mitchell and cinematographer Frank G. DeMarco
- And more!

This campy and unique rock musical also stars Michael Pitt, Miriam Shor, Andrea Martin.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024First, this is an awesome movie. Great music, interesting story and really well produced. It's a true musical in that a majority of the story is told in the music (which is excellent) and a magnificent acting and musical performance by John Cameron Mitchel.
All this is made even better in that the Criterion Collection distributes it, so it comes with some really good extras (a couple almost as long as the movie itself), a great booklet about the movie and how it came to be, and really wonderful packaging. All of this is just standard fair for everything I've purchased from the Criterion Collection. I can't recommend them enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2024I love this film and you can’t go wrong with a Criterion version.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019Already having the 'movie only' DVD for years in one of those cardboard/plastic cheap sleeves, I was delighted in a complete makeover release by Criterion whom I can only say they went the distance to reveal the essence of one the greatest rock musicals ever. Think of the excellent Todd Haynes "Velvet Goldmine" meets "Rocky Horror Picture Show"
and you still aren't close. Originally sourced in 1989 - 1991 some might consider this a LGBT film, but that vuncular came way later and this is more than that. Credit Stephen Trask as musical director/song writer and the multi-talented John Cameron Mitchell as script writer/director as the perfect team to chase a post communist punk rock band across America having only truck stops, senior citizen all-you-can-eat venues as a stage to present the single minded bullet that is Hedwig that is possibly both sexes, either, neither, or a possible homogeneous one. What separate him/her and the angry inch from others is the freshness to stay away from predicable Hollywood, NYC, French styled "The Birdcage" and "The Producers" trite fodder. In the mix a he plays a she, a she plays a he, and chromosomes X, Y, and Z get shuffled and
thrown out as L, M, N, O, P, hey man, I'm a father of three. High marks for originality, execution, and one-of-a-kind film that begets and doesn't back off. Everyone gets a fair chance to call it what they wish. I choose to call it one of the best blu - ray films of this or any recent year in memory and I am as straight as they come. Go figure. One terrific film.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2023John Cameron Mitchell is incredible in this. What a musical and acting and directing talent.
Unforgettable singing. Some songs show his talent above most professional musical talents. It's obvious he was using his unbridled soul as a platform for his performance.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2023I absolutely love this movie
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2022This is one of my favorite musicals and owning The Criterion Collection version is important to me. If you are a fan of physical media then this the best you can get. And, the cherry on the cake is, it cost 50% less than Barnes & Noble.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2022What a great repackaging of a great film. The video quality is much improved from my previous DVD. Audio quality and mix is excellent. I love the special art work with this package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Um belíssimo musical transgressivo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Edición de colección.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great version of this movie
Nice package and version of this film as they did a great job with the picture as it looks fantastic - May only see it better on a 4K disc and that is if they do it properly. Soundtrack was always a highlight of this film too and it sound great on this disc too.
Added bonus is the booklet included with some great photos and added details that add more depth and information for a fan.
Decent special features, but packed - could have had a few more but what is here is good.
Highly recommend grabbing this disc if you are a fan of the film as you will not see a better version unless it comes out on 4K.

4.0 out of 5 stars やはりBlu-rayの方が綺麗

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente empaque y gran película.
