Product Description

Get ready for a taste of HELL! B-movie maestro Bert I. Gordon (Village of the Giants, Empire of the Ants)—the godfather of the “gigantic creature” genre—delivers the biggest Midnight Movie of all with this spine-tingling tale of ecology gone berserk. Based on H.G. Wells’ classic tale of sci-fi terror, The Food of the Gods predicts a future where animals are suddenly at the top of the food chain…and eager to get their fill! On a remote island, a mysterious substance is oozing from the ground. A farmer sees that it acts as a growth hormone and thinks his fortune is made. But when rats, chickens, worms and wasps begin sampling the potent substance, they morph into bloodthirsty giants! Now, it’s up to the island’s few residents and visitors (including Marjoe Gortner, Pamela Franklin, Ralph Meeker, Jon Cypher and Ida Lupino) to destroy “the food of the gods”…before the animals take over for good!

Pure 70s cheese
Saw this at the Whalom drive in Lunenburg Massachusetts as a kid. Takes me back to being a kid, when I shoulda been asleep in the back seat. Movies like this are a lost art. To those use to CGI BS, practical efx look cheesy. But these are pure gold. Sure the acting is bad. But it's got warmth to it.

    Great movie

I see reviewers saying things like, "Movies are made way better now..." But actually this movie's special effects were considered bad even in 1976. Read reviews from the time period. Critics were merciless. I mean, this was a year after JAWS and a year before STAR WARS. It's not like effects in the mid to late '70s were THIS bad. Having said all that, this was a Samuel Z. Arkoff production, which means they had no money and little (or no) concern for impressing critics. It also means, if you turn your brain off and just enjoy the mayhem, you'll have a blast watching it. It's hard to have anything but a soft spot in my heart for a movie of this sort.

I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend. She said that it was a B Movie classic and she remembered seeing it as a kid. I also remembered it when I was a growing up. So I said "What The Hell"! The movie is still pretty good. As far as the plot and the characters go. Special effects are what you would expect from a B-Movie. Giant rats, chickens, and wasps to name a few. The DVD played perfect and the video quality was good from start to finish. Overall, the movie is still cool to watch and soak in the very important message it delivers. Which is, be careful of the things we dump into our environment. It just may come back and bite you in the ass one day! Have fun. And enjoy the lesson!

what is wrong with you people? this is monster movie making
at it's best! no crappy overdone computer effects and horrible
acting and writing and directing! top ten monster movie!
Food of the Gods is a classic from beginning to end. The
story is well written, acted and directed. The special
effects are awesome. Giant chicken, bees and Rats! The
Rats swarm a house and it's just fantastic. If you like
well done horror movies and not just gore [there is some]
but it's done very well then buy this movie. I saw this
in the theater and I was blown away and I bought the
import version years ago as I couldn't wait to see it
again in widescreen. They don't make them like this no more!

What a difference 49 years makes. WHen you watch these older movies you can't help but compare them to today's horror movies. The scripts, the acting, the special effects, the audio....so much better today than it was back then. This was a fun movie as ridiculous as it was. Giant rats, wasps and yes you guessed it chickens. Giant chickens pretty important when you consider the size of eggs they could lay with egg prices being what they are today. Take some time and see this one.... when you get passed the ridiculousness you'll have a good time

I loved this movie when it came out and now I can watch it whenever I want. Yes it's an older film but it's still a good one.

Make sure to buy the Kino Lorber remastered version (Kino Cult). The picture quality is very good and the colors pop.
As for the movie, it's considered a "cult classic ". A farmer finds this "food " that makes everything that eats it into giants. So you have giant wasps, chickens, not to mention the giant rats. The special effects are okay. Just remember that this is a B movie and you'll have fun.

Bravo

Well this was a waste of time. Delivered as ordered but what it doesn’t tell you is that you get 2 versions on the disc. In French. Or the original version in English. But with French subtitles. Which CANNOT be removed. Not happy. Only given 1 star as you can’t post without one!
