Product Description

The history of screen comedy did not begin with Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton. Prior to their appearances on the American screen, an entire generation of comedians was already establishing (and breaking) the boundaries of this rapidly evolving genre. While working at the Vitagraph Studios, music hall artists such as John Bunny, Frank Roberts, and Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Drew retooled their brands of comedy into something uniquely cinematic, advancing the art form and setting the stage for the slapstick explosion. This three-disc collection, presented by the Library of Congress, showcases the bold innovation of these overlooked pioneers, including the ingenious trick film The Disintegrated Convict, the gender-bending irrereverence of Edith Storey, and the epic scale of Larry Semon’s The Sawmill. Vitagraph Comedies also provides precious glimpses of comedians (e.g. Flora Finch or the comedy duo Montgomery and Rock) who are virtually forgotten today, because so little of their work has survived.

Special Features:
• Interviews with curator Rob Stone, archivists Lynanne Schweighofer and George Willeman, and film historian Rob Farr
• Audio commentaries by film historian Anthony Slide

In general I'm neither a votary nor proponent of Blu-Ray video as I find the result to be rather unnatural; stark if you will. Likewise as a purist I'd prefer to not see old films looking better (arguably) than they did when first viewed on screens in standard 35mm format irrespective of age. I choose to view primitive Edison, Vitagraph, Biograph, Keystone and other items of similar ilk as well as later major studio product in as close to original presentation as possible; the exception for me however being the magnificent restorative work done by archivists with regard to decomposing and battered prints and negatives. That said this long ago 13 year resident of Flatbush couldn't be happier with this wonderful 3 disc compilation of Vitagraph material. I've long been a devotee of Mr. Slide's as well as his prodigious output of literature relative to film history and unlike so many commentary tracks attendant to other home video material his knowledge and insights here are to be valued as much as the films themselves. As a 50+ year film historian and collector and in light of this set's availability I lament never having had the forsight to acquire my own copy of Mr. Slide's excellent tome titled "The Big "V", a scholarly analysis of the the Vitagraph company's origins, history, corporate structure, overall output as well as its rightful place among the industry's pioneering film factories. In the event there be additional extant, salvageable Vitagraph material my fervent hope is that this set will be a precursor to future volumes. In the interim I'll be having several 16mm prints made of some of these items for my library and overlook the unnatural facade endemic to Blu-Ray video. And oh yes Mr. Slide should you have occasion to read these notes I'd like to thank you for introducing me to Ethel Grandin as well as a handful of her contemporaries with whom I previously had been entirely unfamiliar.

I bought this mainly for historical reasons, assuming the humor would be a bit stiff and dated. Couldn’t have been more wrong. I’ve been chuckling for days. Even a 1908 entry that is little other than a woman trying to bring a stepladder to her grandfather (?) is uproariously funny, as the woman in question has serious physical comedy skills.

Many little known comedians, and some excellent entries from the better known ones (Bunny, Drew, Semon). Worth it at 3x the price!

I am a longtime fan of silent film comedy and this disc opened up a whole new era for me. Most people associate silent film comedy in the 1910s with Mack Sennett style baggy pants comedians wearing outlandish make up and performing slapstick humor. Instead what we find in this set are films made by such people as Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Drew who are normal, middle class folks, living normal middle class lives engaged in situation comedies. It’s a fascinating glimpse of how real people looked and acted within their 1910s environment of middle class homes and work places. And it’s fun traveling back to 1915 to visit how middle class life was lived back then. Of course this all changed in 1918 when Larry Semon embraced Sennett’s crazy style and became Vitagraph’s top comic whose films are featured on Disc 3 of this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific set. Where do I sign up for more?

Id love to see more similar releases from the Library of Congress. Unlike the commentator chosen for the set, I happen to love Larry Semon, and I was surprised they went with his 20's longer films as general consensus I've heard and my own experience tells me he was better in shorter bursts. I'd have loved a whole disc of his short teens comedies, and way less John Bunny and Lloyd Daniels.

the big surprise or the set was definitely Sidney Drew, whose comedies genuinely were subtle and marvellous, though not laugh out loud, as the commentator said.

Picture quality was revelatory. Fine grain, untampered with scans of mostly 35mm prints. boy I wish all silent movies were treated so well in high definition.

So if anyone from LoC is listening, I'm desperate to see some well preserved Lloyd Hamilton in this quality. please and thank you. Much love from Australia.
