Product Description
Beyond ALIEN. Beyond THE THING... On the dark side of dreams, a new terror takes shape. There has been a gruesome death at Project Shadowzone, but that's just the beginning. A group of NASA hyper-sleep researchers are conducting tests in an abandoned underground facility in the Nevada desert. One subject has died during the test, and NASA has sent Captain Hickock (DAVID BEECROFT) to investigate. What he finds is more horrific than the death itself. The scientists, guided by Dr. Erhart (LOUISE FLETCHER) and Dr. Van Fleet (JAMES HONG), have broken the boundaries of dream-state sleep and have tapped into a parallel dimension. The deadly error brings forth an alien life form that decides to stay and prey. The alien being can assume any life form it wants and becomes each person's deepest, darkest fear. When only Hickock and Dr. Erhart survive the deadly rampage, they must confront the unrelenting intruder and find a way out of the SHADOWZONE.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2013I had been looking to own this movie for years. At first I could only find a copy on VHS which was not of the best quality. The DVD on the other hand is of excellent quality. Great clarity, no problems.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2023MY CALL: Solid B-movie fun. By no means an epic bad movie, but a bad movie worthy of your deliberate bad movie night, for sure. Great and recognizable cast, decent pacing and storytelling, awful writing, and all the money went into the monster effects and gore!
Investigating a death in a research bunker, Captain Hickock (David Beecroft) stumbles across an interdimensional experiment gone horribly wrong. Dr. Van Fleet (James Hong) has been researching deep dream states using the subconscious as a radio beacon to contact other dimensions. What crosses over this interdimensional dream bridge is a shapeshifting monster from another world. This sounds a bit like From Beyond '86, and it plays out like a lower budget version of it… but not without some cheerful B-movie charm courtesy of director J. S. Cardone. People get picked off in this research bunker in a pattern strongly reminiscent of Alien '79, a model adopted by numerous 80s and 90s Sci-Horror.
We really feel the budget limitations as we watch this low budget flick. But every effort was made to make this a fun movie, which means most of the budget went to gore and creature effects. The autopsy and surgery scenes are really gory, well done, and give you plenty of time to soak in the bloody bones and exposed organs on camera. Then the first monster effects are over the top with chonky latex mutations and I simply love it. Other effects wander into wild shenanigans, like a giant rat head breaking through a wall, a mutant monkey monster, or other mutilated, wet, disfigured creatures.
Except for the lengthy autopsy and surgery scenes, most of the effects are pretty brief. But we always see enough to be very satisfied with the monstrous fleshiness of what’s on screen. These effects could definitely have been more abundant. But I didn’t find myself getting frustrated with the lulls in horror action. And not that this was well written, but that says something about the storytelling.
Oh, and don’t watch this with your grandmother… there’s a lot of nudity. A lot! This may have been inspired by Lifeforce '85. The movie doesn’t need this at all. But I understand that the genre thrives on such titillating raciness, and in my youth I would have lodged zero complaints. Maybe not really today either—I’m just more critical of it. A lot of the set pieces are very cheap—just keep your eye on the nudity, right? No one will notice. Still, in many ways, I feel like this movie was swinging for the fences with the effects and story.
The cast is pretty impressive. Fleet’s assistants Dr. Erhardt (Louise Fletcher) and Dr. Kidwell (Shawn Weatherly), and Fleet’s technician Wiley (Miguel A. Núñez Jr.) are all played by actors familiar to the genre. But the writing and acting is… well, it’s pretty terrible. Even Academy Award winner Louise Fletcher (for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) couldn’t act her way through the haphazardly clunky dialogue. Maybe she just stopped caring the moment her check cleared.
In the finale, our slimy humanoid creature is not of top-notch effects caliber. But I assure you it is satisfyingly slimy and grimy and gnarly and gross. More importantly, we see plenty of it! It looks completely ridiculous… in a fun way. And that’s what this movie is: solid B-movie fun. You almost want to high-five the effects team for this deliciously bad monster design. Great cast, decent enough pacing and storytelling despite the awful writing, and all the money went into the monster effects and gore… as they should!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2017A halfway, decent, 80's horror/sci-fi flick. Yes, the release date was 1990, but it has the 80's written all over it. From Full Moon, you would expect it to be campy, with nudity and cheap monster gags, and this one fits that criteria perfectly. The acting is pretty decent for a movie like this, and its actually a very good vehicle for Louise Fletcher and James Hong to be the twisted characters you want them to be.
This one has some nudity, (not too much), mild language and some decent gore in the form of an autopsied body, some blood and some cheap but fairly well done monster effects.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2024Amazon appears to have 2 SD versions of Shadowzone, one with a run time of 1h 28m and one with a run time of 1h 50m. In fact they are the same video. The one with the longer run time is sourced from Filmrise and plays at the wrong speed, 23.976 fps, when it should be played at 29.97 fps. What appears to have happened is Filmrise received a source file that it assumed was to be played at the standard frame rate for film, 23.976 fps. However, the source file was likely intended for creating VHS video tapes or for broadcast on analog TV and cable. It has extra video frames, with 2 frames out of every 5 being duplicates, and should be played at 29.97 fps. The run time is increased by 22 minutes because it plays at the slower film rate of 23.976 fps. The HD version titled Shadowzone REMASTERED has the correct run time of 1h 28m and plays at the 23.976 fps film rate, but it was created for digital playback and does not have the extra duplicate video frames needed for analog playback. The REMASTERED version has more saturated color, is HD and widescreen, with the picture cropped at the bottom but expanded left and right relative to the 4:3 aspect ratio SD picture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good old fashioned 80s monster movie!
Another 1980s low budget horror featuring a shapeshifting alien! This one is conjured up from another direction by a sleep experiment (For some reason) headed by a mad doctor played by James Hong. Despite its low budget, this one is pretty entertaining. The director, JS Cardone, was responsible for the atmospheric video nasty The Slayer, and creates a good atmosphere here. The story starts with an officer arriving at the underground base holding the experiments to investigate a mysterious death, and Cardone does a good here in making the situation slightly uneasy in that the characters are clearly trying to hide something. The monster is kept pretty much under wraps for most of the movie, which helps. One of the better movies of this ilk from the eighties.

2.0 out of 5 stars Band of tripe
I read a review of this film in a horror reference book, they gave it 5/5,it just goes to show don't believe all you read, this film is serious tripe, even on the front cover the spelling is tripe it says" In alien no one can hear you scream, in the shadowzone that's all TOU CAN HERE" The film is a typical Charles Band film so avoid unless you are a fan.AWFUL!!
