A great family movie with no sex or bad language and a great storyline.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2023A little sci-fi action mixed in w/ a first love story. The naming convention of places & character’s names is something that we observed w/ uniqueness of symbolic purpose “East Texas”, “Tulsa” “Gardener” “Magellan”, “Genesis” etc. you’ll see. There was just one scene (shortly after they meet on earth & go on the run) that didn’t make sense; can’t disclose it. Yet then, if he (scientist who’s responsible) had said something early on about who he was & why he was doing what needed to be done, then the rest of the movie wouldn’t need to evolve the way it did past his “escape”. The boy wouldn’t have gone on the adventure to find out what he loved the most about earth & “find” his father. They circle back around though; nick of time. It’s a touching coming of age love story but it’s not over the top. I mean, much is left to the imagination and there’s nothing overtly sexual about it. Just subtleties; age appropriate. A shared sleeping bag scene w/ exposed shoulders for her w/ his chest a bit exposed; oh and a hand on an exposed knee in different scene would also make it somewhat questionable for younger kids to understand these little innuendos. There isn’t any violence but it deals w/ grief loss after death & actual scene showing a person dying in a moderately graphic way. And some risk taking youths engaging in reckless acts such as stealing, sneaking out, running away, flying & driving recklessly.
There was good chemistry between the young loves but one of the sweetest moments is late in the movie between the “surrogate” Mars mom & the young Okie girl on earth he loves; named Tulsa bcz she was abandoned there. Oh and a touching moment between surrogate and boy too. The casting of actors was great as well. A few moments a bit over dramatic but hey it’s a love story wrapped up in survival story of the human condition and humanity’s need to explore new things. There’s a lot going on!
We much enjoyed this heart felt movie w/o it being cheesy or preachy. Subtle undertones of religious ideology but not focal point at all.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2023I loved this movie. But first let's have fun with the ridiculous premise. Not that the lead astronaut would 'act irresponsibly' by getting pregnant right before the launch to Mars -- if Presidents can 'not have sex' in the Oval Office, then anything is plausible. I did have to laugh at the euphemism -- she 'acted irresponsibly' by endangering a trillion dollar NASA mission. No, what's ridiculous is that her pregnancy could have gone undetected in the final medical screening before the launch. She could have 'acted irresponsibly' en route to Mars, but that would have turned into a much less sappy story. However, the sappiness and absurdity is worth it for the romantic payoff, which is really quite sweet and wonderful. The brilliant young actor Asa Butterfield gets so show some light-hearted versatility here. He's usually typecast as a 'nerdy teen genius' (Ender's Game, A Brilliant Young Mind) but here he doesn't have Asperger's Syndrome and clinical depression and gets to crack some jokes.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2017Oh I could complain; there's more than one bother. But the positives abound. The story was strangely engaging despite it being so trite. Hope the hinted sequel happens.
And WHOA!....a day later and no other reviews here yet? What?
It's everything the trailer promises and a bit more. A must see for any fan of space or SciFi films. The romance works. There's very nicely sussed out characters -- all of whom are walking tightropes in their inner realms and we feel their struggles. Don't ask me to diss the film's weak spots....I like this film and I just don't care if I'm investing in a bias towards it.
2nd viewing the very next night. As an experiment, I watched again to see what entertainment values could suffer my remembering so much. There were a lot of tidbits firstly seen this time, and some relationship fuzzies got more sharply etched. The ending became a bit more probable to me. CGI and comicbook editing and story condensing really do carry the viewer along. 2nd viewing makes for forgiving a few of the bothers. Future me -- probably you can enjoy this again even as soon as a month from now, but hold out as long as you can. Bet you don't make it passed 9-23-17 at the latest.
6-15-17 3rd viewing was shortened...I watched it from his arrival on Earth.....still got my tears flowing. Sue me. Some of the parts are a bother, but who cares?...this isn't a space movie...it's a soap opera with rocketry well on the side. Wish it were more like the Martian, but yeah, sure, I'll take Mars no matter how it's served up.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2023I found that I cared about the characters more and more. The story is familiar but the "space" location made it unique and special. This movie has so many different demographics it is sure to touch many people as life moves on. I loved it and am actually wiling to watch it again! That is rare for me, I am up to about twenty movies in 62 years!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beau mélange entre comédie romantique et SF !

5.0 out of 5 stars Original
J'avais peur que ce film soit niais mais pas du tout. L'histoire est originale même s'il le scénario manque d'un peu de réflexion (comment a pu mangé le bébé à sa naissance sur mars? ...) Franchement un film à voir.
