- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2025"Past Lives" is a cinematic masterpiece that weaves a poignant narrative of love, loss, and the enduring power of human connections. Director Celine Song's debut film is a testament to her skillful storytelling, as she delicately explores the complexities of identity and the immigrant experience through the lives of Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends separated by time and circumstance.
The film's strength lies in its understated yet powerful portrayal of emotions. Greta Lee and Teo Yoo deliver performances that are both charismatic and deeply nuanced, capturing the essence of a bond that transcends decades and continents. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their interactions are filled with a sense of longing and nostalgia that resonates deeply with the audience.
Song's direction is masterful, using silence and subtlety to convey the depth of her characters' emotions. The cinematography is breathtaking, capturing the vibrant landscapes of Seoul and New York City with a gentle, ethereal quality that complements the film's emotional tone. The score is equally evocative, weaving a haunting melody that underscores the bittersweet nature of Nora and Hae Sung's relationship.
What makes "Past Lives" truly remarkable is its thoughtful exploration of themes that are both universally relatable and deeply personal. It delves into the immigrant experience, cultural identity, and the choices we make in life, all while maintaining a focus on the enduring power of love and connection. The film poses profound questions about the nature of relationships and the paths not taken, leaving viewers to ponder the what-ifs of their own lives.
In short, "Past Lives" is a beautifully crafted film that will linger in your thoughts long after the credits roll. It is a powerful reflection on love, identity, and the human condition, making it one of the standout films of the year.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025Let’s break this down: these two lovebirds had their whole lives to make things work, but instead, they spent decades apart—probably ghosting each other before ghosting was even a thing. And now, thanks to fate, or more likely a desperate attempt to rekindle a teenage fantasy, they’re back together for seven whole days of nostalgia, emotional turmoil, and probably a lot of sighing while staring out of windows.
Naturally, these two will embark on a grand tour of New York, where every landmark becomes a metaphor for their relationship. The Empire State Building? A towering symbol of their enduring love. Central Park? A reminder of all the paths they could have taken. Times Square? A chaotic mess, much like their emotions. And of course, there will be a rain-soaked confession scene, because nothing says “I love you” like standing in the middle of the street while looking like a drowned rat.
Then, we have the classic dilemma: Do they abandon their entire lives for this one-week emotional bender? Because, let’s be honest, one of them is definitely married with kids, and the other probably has some tragically poetic reason why they never moved on (spoiler: it's not poetic, it's just bad decision-making). So now, they must navigate the very real consequences of throwing their entire existence into the trash for a love story that was on pause for 30 years.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2025I’m a sucker for stories about the immigrant experience but this is so much more than that. It’s a story of the human condition- how life’s twists and turns of the past result in the place we all find ourselves in- the now. And how everyone ponders how our lives would have been so different if we had made a different choice along that road.
The acting is superb. The awkward silences are essential to conveying the chasm of fates between characters. The story is heart wrenching because it is so utterly relatable. It is simple and sparse. No flashy consumes , no special effects, no super heroes.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2025Past Lives is, at its heart, a sad movie but that shouldn't stop anyone from watching it. The idea of meeting up in adulthood with one's first pre-adolescent crush is a common fantasy, and the movie deals with it by taking the love-conquers-all formula and turning it on its head in its own creative way. I could go on, but I don't want to be a spoiler. The Korean characters give the movie a nice international flavor, and the one NY scene shot along the East River with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop will make you want to book a flight to the Big Apple.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2025I shall add my 5 star rating to all the others. I am of the firm belief that first loves, however youthful, never die. This film exemplifies that.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024This movie was okay to me. I loved the storyline but overall I didn’t find it to be super memorable. My husband and I watched this as a date night movie and it just didn’t have enough action, comedy, relatability or even romance really to grasp our attention.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2025Lovely movie good story, good streaming service good quality picture
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2025A must see. Superb acting. Fantastic writing and a heartrenching love story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance natural
. Y mucho
