Janus Contemporaries presents Eight Mountains

Product Description

An epic journey of friendship and self-discovery set in the Italian Alps, The Eight Mountains is a cinematic experience as intimate as it is monumental. Adapting an award-winning novel by Paolo Cognetti, Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch portray, through observant detail and stunning landscape photography, the profound relationship between Pietro (Luca Marinelli) and Bruno (Alessandro Borghi), who first meet as children in an Alpine village. Years later, the estranged friends reunite, after the passing of Pietro’s father (Filippo Timi), in order to realize his dream of rebuilding a ruined cabin on a mountain slope. This emotional project, and their subsequent explorations of the mountains, create a strong bond between the two—yet individual dreams, and the demands of society, ultimately drive them to pursue irrevocably divergent paths.

5 stars for the film itself, which is wonderfully rich and moving, one of my favorite of the year.
3 stars for the DVD though. The film is only in aspect ratio 1.33:1, instead of the intended original 4:3. Such an odd decision especially by Criterion; they should have at least made the choice available on the DVD. In the extra features the filmmakers talk about how they specifically chose 4:3 for the film. (The trailer extra is in 4:3 to show the difference.) The change on DVD results in a stretched image, which occasionally looks quite distorted. The film is still enjoyable at least.

1.0 out of 5 stars You cannot play this video in England
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 6, 2024
A total waste of money, for which I have still not received the credit I was promised. I bought it from Amazon UK, with my account, I live in the UK, I asked for it to be delivered to my mother in law, who also lives in the UK. She excitedly settled down to watch it and it wouldn't play, because it is not compatible with British video recorders. On looking again to see what had gone wrong I noticed it had been shipped from the States, however there is nothing at all in the description to say not to order this if you live in the UK! I have only given it one star because I couldn't post the review without it. It's a beautiful film, which I have watched at the cinema and I had wanted to share it with my mother in law, who has lived in those mountains. Thank you Amazon for helping to make granny's birthday memorable, she was extremely disappointed and I am £21.24 worse off.
