Product Description
Steven Spielberg directs this high-velocity thriller about a motorist terrorized by an evil truck. Spielberg's first full-length movie, Duel, helped jumpstart the director's big-screen career, with a gripping, action-packed story hailed by critics as a film that "belongs on the classics shelf reserved for top suspensers" (Daily Variety). Dennis Weaver stars as the traveling salesman waging a desperate battle for survival after he is mysteriously singled out. Praised for its deft use of relentlessly mounting psychological tension, Duel features one of the most uniquely terrifying "characters" in movie history: a massive, roaring, 40-ton truck with sheer menace. A few years later, the action of Spielberg's blockbuster hit Jaws would echo Duel's tale of a lone hero in a heart-stopping fight to the finish against a monstrous, inhuman foe.

A classic with Dennis Weaver keeps you on edge of seat

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025I haven’t seen this movie in a long time since it was on svengoolie on Saturday night at 8pm on Me-tv. Best Spielberg thriller I’ve ever seen since Jaws. Best truck chase action thriller that inspired countless other films like the terminator and terminator 2, the hitcher, black dog with Patrick Swayze, etc.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2023This is a Nov. 2023 update! I just received the new 4K UHD/HDR Blu-ray of "Duel." The improvement over HD is impressive, immersing one in the thriller. Differences between 4K and HD are subtle, but with 4K it just seems to put you into the movie itself. I heartily recommend this 4K version! Also, it includes the original 74 minute TV version, which, with less "filler," increases the tension, excitement, and terror. The picture quality of the TV version is definitely NOT "HD", but feels more like watching a '70s tv show--which this was.
I first saw "Duel" in around 1972 on ABC as one of their movies of the week. I was mesmerized and thrilled by the relentlessness of the film; I was on the edge of my seat for all 90 minutes! Talk about road rage!
"Duel" was Steven Spielberg's first full-length film, a 'made-for-TV' movie starring Dennis Weaver (from 'Gunsmoke' and 'McCloud'), about David Mann, a mild-mannered middle-class traveling salesman being terrorized by the aggressive driver of an 18-wheeler, and how Mann (note the name!) responds during the 90 minutes of hair-raising terror. The original TV version was 74 minutes minus ads. Since ABC decided to release it theatrically in Europe, they added about 15 minutes of "filler" to get it to just under 90 minutes. The "filler" does not adversely affect the white-knuckle thriller, and adds a telephone scene with his wife (Jacqueline Scott of "Fugitive" tv series) that displays Mann's demure, passive husband/wife relationship , at odds with the challenge of facing potential violence threatened by the Peterbilt truck driver (whom we never see). Also, some mild cussing was thrown in to make it seem more realistic for movie theater audiences.
The picture quality is excellent in restored high definition and in widescreen (it was originally shot in 35mm 1.33:1 ratio).
There are excellent bonus videos, including Spielberg discussing the filming process and how he fought to get it filmed on location instead of in a sound stage with tacky process backgrounds (to save money of course). Also there is a spot with Richard Matheson, who wrote the original novelette published in 'Playboy' magazine, and the screenplay. Matheson wrote many screenplays for 'Twilight Zone', including the famous "Nightmare at 20,000 Ft." with William Shatner.
My only 'criticism' is that Universal didn't include the original 74-minute version. Fortunately, for the serious fan, a new 4K UHD Blu-ray is being released in November 2023 that will include a Blu-ray HD print of the 74-minute TV version, in 1.33:1 standard tube-tv ratio.
Spielberg credits his work on "Duel" as being the film that propelled him from directing TV show into making feature films. What a debut!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025All that buildup but the ending comes really fast and feels like it was Plan B or something.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2025Met all expectations.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2015Having grown up in the 1970s as a kid, I have some fond memories of that decade. This movie is one of them. I was not aware of who Dennis Weaver was until I saw this movie. From that point on, I knew who he was and identified him with it. I loved the movie and the premises of it was fairly new. Road rage in some form or manner. I'm sure we have all had it in our driving lives. Dennis Weaver plays a businessman out to see a client. If he doesn't get to see him, he will lose an important account. It all starts out well enough until he gets behind a stinky, smelly and loud tanker truck that doesn't seem to be in ANY hurry. Well, David, played by Dennis Weaver IS in a bit of a hurry to get to his destination.
When he passes the truck just like he did many times before with other vehicles, all seems okay, until the truck speeds up and gets in front of him, slowing down and putting his brakes on just to annoy. That is when the tensions get high and things start to turn for the worse. I won't give the ending away, but those of you who have seen it, already know it's conclusion.
I wouldn't call this a horror movie or even a scary movie at that, it is more of a suspenseful, what would you do in a situation like that kind of movie. Well done! There is a little swearing in it, but other than that it is pretty tame compared to today's vulgarity and violence in movies.
If you want an early piece of 1970s cinema, you cannot ignore DUEL. Directed by Steven Spielberg, who brought you JAWS in 1975 and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND in 1978. The prime focus is on Dennis Weaver's character and what he does to confront this kind of evil that seemed to be an ordinary business day going to see a client. This Special Collector's Edition is pretty good for a DVD release.
I saw that there is a future Blu-ray release of this movie coming also, so hopefully it will address some of the issues some reviewers have with this movie edition. That being the missing original "growl" with the truck toward the end of the movie. I also noticed that the Coyote howl is not there also when he visits the "snake lady". There is a different sound to the truck trailer and I also think the fight scene in the café was edited a bit. I remember Dennis Weaver's character getting hit twice before he went to the pool table.

BLURAY UPDATE: Well, It is now in widescreen or 1:85:1 about. The sounds I mentioned above in the DVD version are now there in the BLU. I think I recall it more prominent in the TV version, but at least it is there now in the HI DEF. Cast and Filmmakers/Production Notes are not in the Bluray version.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025This is one of the most tense and suspenseful films made period.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2024After watching glowing reviews on YouTube I had to get me a copy and, yes, I really like the upgraded theater version with added scenes. The 4k is beautiful. Great first film to get Steven Spielberg recognized as a promising action/drama director. It contains a lot of scenes that were Hitchcock inspired such as the diner scene. Hitchcock liked to stay ahead of his audience and in that tradition the scene where the camera pans the truck drivers boots in the diner which should have been a dead giveaway as to the culprit except all the boots looked like the boots observed in an earlier scene. The ID of the terrorist driver was never given away. Great suspense film making.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a debut!?!?!?
If anyone needed any more proof that Spielberg is the one of the finest directors to ever have lived, look no further than his directional debut 'duel'.
God my heart is still racing.
This man puts the fast and furious series to shame with this masterpiece, the characters, the mystery, the sounds, the cars mix together for a beautiful piece of cinema.
I recommend for this for all audiences but especially those who love a good car chase.

5.0 out of 5 stars
