Product Description

Master filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille (The Sign of the Cross, Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments) combines religious fervor and a stirring love story in one of his greatest screen spectacles, The Crusades. Christians in Medieval Europe are planning war against the Saracens, who have taken over the Holy City of Jerusalem. In order to obtain supplies for his soldiers, England’s king, Richard the Lion-Hearted (Henry Wilcoxon, Unconquered), is forced to marry a princess (Loretta Young, The Stranger) he has never met. The two are soon involved in a treacherous battle for survival of the Holy City—and of their love. This powerful epic unfolds in true DeMille fashion, bringing the past to glorious life as a cast of thousands creates “the kind of excitement that pulls an audience irresistibly to the edge of its seat” (The New York Times).

Although far removed from historical accuracy I have to give this movie 5 stars for its entertainment value. Sometimes its amazing how good the cinematography & sets are on these older films. This would have been a very good "Crusades" movie had they not chosen historical figures to base a great Medieval storyline around. But that's a quirk of mine I figure if you make a movie involving real historical characters it should be historically accurate, more often than not the true story is the more thrilling anyway!!! Filled with every thing your looking for in a epic sword swinging action adventure don't let the fact that it is a older B/W movie scare you off. It's definitely worth adding to your movie collection. This movie also has a lot to offer for those interested in film history.

Aside from the fact this 1935 film is in Black and White, it is full screen at 2 hours and 5 minutes duration. At this time in film history there was no Computer Graphic (CG) so a cast of 10,000 was employed in the production. It appears only brief frame time of the movie being filmed on location in Jerusalem.

Although the film is about the Third Crusade and is entertaining, it has many historical flaws. The greatest being the two scenes where Salah al Din is in the presence of Richard I. They never met according to historians on both sides of the conflict.

However, some of the story has intriguing interpretations. One interesting point was illustrated in the comparative difference of Saracen Swords and swords of Western Christians which most viewers do not understand. With all this I enjoyed this product even though there is no film menu or extras. The viewer should be thankful and fortunate this film has been preserved.

Cecil B. De Mille is one of the best Producer/Director in the world. No one can match him. This movie was excellent. It show us exactly how it was
and why the Crusades were called for. This is not only a great movie to watch with excellent actors, but it is also historical. Thank God for movie makers that give you those with good morals and the love for God and Faith. We need more of this today to encourage that there is a better way to live and that with God we have something to live for and die for. In both ends we come out victors.

Sorry DeMille fans but this one doesn't measure up to his other epic features. It lacks the over-the-top energy and opulence of "Sign Of The Cross" and "Cleopatra". The primary fault is a weak script that crams way too much plot and weak dialogue into a two hour play. All the actors do a fine job with the material but they can't keep it from being fatally boring. As always the meticulous attention paid to sets, props and costumes is first-rate, the cinematography is radiant. The "cast of thousands" is handled masterfully but the spectacle, the scope is missing. Even the terrific battle towards the end seems stage-bound. No, for good, old fashioned eye-popping spectacle that is the DeMille trademark, look elsewhere than this movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars terribly inaccurate account of the crusades
Reviewed in Canada on July 16, 2023
This movie is of some interest for historical reasons only, for those who like to see vintage actors and actresses. Some of the sets are impressive for the time, and some of the acting is quite good. However, the story is so inaccurate historically as to hardly be worth it to watch.
