Product Description

In the time-warp tradition of Iceman comes Ghost Warrior, an inventive fantasy-adventure from cult-movie king Charles Band (Parasite). Suddenly awake after 400 years of frozen sleep, a valiant samurai warrior struggles to survive the harsh challenges of modern-day Los Angeles. This action-packed tale is the thrilling saga of Yoshi (Hiroshi Fujioka, High Seas Hijack, In the Line of Duty III), a master of Japan’s 16th-century fighting arts who is accidentally frozen in time and miraculously revived in the 1980s. On the run from the institute that ended his sleep of centuries, Yoshi must pit his ancient skills and power against the forces of a violent and confusing world. He has vanquished enemies from a distant time—but can he prevail on the streets of the future? Also known as Swordkill, Ghost Warrior co-stars the wonderful Janet Julian (King of New York).

Special Features:
-DIE BY THE SWORD: NEW Interview with Special Makeup Effects Artist Robert Short
-Audio Commentary by Action Film Historians Brandon Bentley and Mike Leeder
-Theatrical Trailer
-Optional English Subtitles

I hadn't seen this film until now. I was one of the warriors in the opening scene. A whole week of stomping around in deep snow resulted in about 3 seconds of footage in which I was recognizable. But it paid well. Those scenes were shot on location in Mt. Shasta, California over Thanksgiving week, 1983.

A samurai rescues a lady, but in the process, is stabbed and thrown into freezing water when he fails to kill a defeated foe. He is frozen until the 20th century, when he is thawed out by scientists. He winds up in modern-day Los Angeles with a young and beautiful female expert in Japanese culture. There are the expected "fish-out-of-water" scenarios, and a few more interesting ones, such as the sushi chef who tries to speak with him and says he speaks with a strange dialect, and must be nuts. conflits of interest regarding the samurai bring the story to a climax where he is forced to make a similar choice as he had in the past.
The technical production quality is not first-rate, as if this was done on a low budget with low-end equipment. But the sincerity of the production comes through and makes the film surprisingly watchable.

Ghost Warrior [DVD]: No frills packaging & disc. Yet it doesn't appear to be a DVD-R. The picture (full screen) & sound are good for a 40 year old B movie. At $4.99, no complaints here. I'm glad I found the disc after searching off & on for years.

Most People don't even know what "Samurai" means. Most people think's it means "Warrior or Fighter",but what it truly means "To Serve". It's mostly to their Lords & Masters and in some cases there own families. In this story he is fighting for his wife and he is outnumber and is shot 4 times by arrows, he falls into "Freezing" water that when he is found 500 years later still frozen & the fact that he was frozen so quickly by the water he became preserved and he was able to bring him back to life. He is a "Ghost from the past". If you like what I wrote, watch the movie you will not be sorry.

Very good movie! Great picture and sound! KL did a great job with the transfer! Although, they have supplied a very annoying commentary track by Brandon Bentley and Mike Leeder. It's unfortunate that sometimes film historians are hired to do these commentaries and they just end up trashing the movie and talking about a bunch of unrelated stuff. Once in a while they did mention a film title I'd jot down to check out later, but that's about all I took away from it. Don't get me wrong. It's great to listen to commentaries where they joke around and have fun. That old C.H.U.D. track with John Heard, Daniel Stern, et al, is pure gold. But this track just falls flat because they don't appreciate the film and they have a bunch of fun talking to each other at my expense.

5.0 out of 5 stars need to see more modern day thugs
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 8, 2014
Ghost Warrior is a brilliant film.

The sword fights are good. I would like to have seen MORE modern California street thugs and gang members fight with the time traveled (and preserved in ice) samurai warrior .

The Main female character Is played by Actress Janet Julian as an Oriental specialist with knowledge of Japanese culture but does not speak the Oriental language. Miss Julian does an excellent and believable job playing a Japanese Historian and specialist.

The MGM DVD transfer is very good. The picture is clean and the sound and audio are also clear.

There is one scene with Oriental music used in the background and that music sounded and reminded me of the soundtrack for a video game called 'Ninja' released on the sega master system in 1986

I think the film was actually made during 1982/ 1983 because in one scene, the samurai swordsman is walking the high street and you can clearly see a cinema in the background advertising ‘Sinbad’ with Lou ferigno and rocky 3 with Mr.T

The DVD is slightly expensive but worth buying if you enjoy 1980’s California fashion and some decent sword fighting against modern day hooligans

5.0 out of 5 stars Der Weg des Kriegers!
Reviewed in Germany on May 21, 2011
Toll!

I first saw this movie on a video rental in the late 1980's. I was a serious martial artist back then & this film struck a chord for some reason. I had been looking for it for years but couldn't remember the proper title & then found it while trolling through 80's martial arts movies. It's definitely B movie fodder, I don't know ANY of the cast, but it's worth the watching if only for the philosophical arguments for & against how far science goes.

It was fine, except that there was certain subtitles missing from the film, this is for when the Japanese samurai speaks in his native tongue. This was a peculiar anomaly.
