Product Description
In this controversial and notorious buddy film, director Bertrand Blier (GET OUT YOUR HANDKERCHIEFS) created what critic Pauline Kael described as “an explosively funny erotic farce – both a celebration and a satire of men’s daydreams.” Gerard Depardieu (in the role that would make him an international star) and Patrick Dewaere portray Jean-Claude and Pierrot, two amoral drifters who travel the French countryside committing petty crimes and harassing the women they encounter, including Miou-Miou, Jeanne Moreau, and, in an early role, Isabelle Huppert. Perpetually on the run from the police and the women they encounter, the two are always just one step ahead of death or imprisonment as a result of their crime spree, but, as Kevin Thomas in the LA Times observes, ”Blier is interested more in Jean-Claude and Pierrot as sexual chauvinists than as petty criminals, and as they learn to become more considerate lovers they become more likable. Above all, they embody the sure-fire appeal of all movie anti-heroes, free-spirits who live entirely for the moment and at all times follow their impulses.” Graced with a justly famous score by Stéphane Grappelli, GOING PLACES remains as shocking and outrageous today as it did upon its initial release.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2022Two small time hoods (Gerard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere) spend their days roaming the streets, robbing stores, and molesting women. In some ways this is truly an amazing film in what it is able to get away with. The two main characters are immoral, ignorant, insensitive, and brutal and the women are demeaned and degraded. The overall content is vulgar and perverse and yet somehow this thing comes off as a lyrical, offbeat delight that is pure entertainment.
It’s a definite original with every scene being an ingenious comic set-up. The scenario structure and use of locations is perfect. The pacing is fluid and director Bertrand Blier’s eye for detail near brilliant. The two hours move along like a breeze. It never gets boring and I actually almost wished it could have been longer.
The comic threads are hilarious and they get funnier and funnier as they go along. The guys’ constant, futile and very explicit attempts at getting a "frigid" woman (Miou-Miou) excited are a particular standout.
This is the type of black comedy that should be used as an example for all others. It’s consistently unique and manages to balance the ugly elements with the lighthearted without going overboard on either. It even throws in a surreal angle without a hitch.
Veteran French actress Jeanne Moreau has one of her finest latter career roles playing a lonely lady in desperate need of male attention. Her scene is well played out and even has a shocking conclusion. Depardieus ‘friendly’ conversation with a shopping mall security guard is another standout. The ultimate joke though may be in the film’s title as these guys are truly going nowhere.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2012I just had a sudden hankering to see the first movie I'd seen Gerard Depardieu in, and remembered this 1974 Road Movie and sure enough found a pre-viewed DVD on Amazon. It's great to be able to gratify my appetities so easily. The story is just as I remembered it, two young grungy, sexy, dangerous (to themselves, too) young toughs and the various women they run in to, including Jeane Moreau, the sexiest woman alive. It's a treat to see it again, and to remember that Depardieu was not always built like a refrigerator. I was writing my book about the same time. The Common Garden: Sensuality and Seduction
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2024Someone else talked about not liking reading the subtitles so I assume there were subtitles. There were not subtitles on my copy. I’m rating a four because I don’t feel it’s fair to drop the rating because someone else said it had subtitles, but honestly I have no idea if it’s good or bad.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2016Very strange movie. Just realize that they treat women like s***, accept that, and keep watching. It's impossible to tell what is going to happen next. Jeanne Moreau has such a sour face, but it lights up when she smiles. Marie-Ange (I think that's the character's name) is such a sweetie, maybe the best thing about the movie. Then of course parts of it are really funny. Very glad I decided to watch this thing that I knew nothing about.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2021The movie that made him famous the world over. Gerard Depardieu is the best actor in the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2014Like Get Out Your Handkerchiefs this is a flavorful very dark comedy with the team of Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere (a very gifted actor who committed suicide). The women are also fine with a particularly strong turn by the great Jeanne Moreau. Not for the stuffy and faint of heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2014If you like French movies with subtitles, then you will like this one (I guess). I hate subtitles and I made the mistake of not reading the reviews about this movie. My mistake. Second mistake was buying the movie. Should have just rented it instead. Oh well, live and learn. Can't tell you much more about the movie because I really haven't watched it. If I wanted to read the movie I would get the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2006Though I can appreciate the central performances of Miou Miou, Patrick Dewaere ( as Pierrot) and Gerard Depardieu ( as Jean-Claude) it is not until the legendary Jeanne Moreau shows up as a just released, wary jailbird with a secret, Jeanne Pirolle that I realize what my problem is with Bertrand Blier's "Going Places": it lacks humanity, it lacks a heart, it is cold, beautifully made and directed but icy and Moreau's short time onscreen radiates such warmth and humanity that it thaws this film for the short time that she is around.
Pierrot and Jean-Claude are amoral petty thieves, part-time lovers and full time jerks out for a good time: willing and eager to victimize anyone who deigns to get near them...for example Miou Miou as a depressed, almost catatonic beautician, Marie-Ange, who exists in Blier's and by extension Pierrot and Jean-Claude's world to taunt, beat and basically rape.
Blier's, who would direct the anarchic, witty and charming "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs" just four years later with Depardieu and Dewaere, "Going Places" amazes on the one hand in it's mean spiritedness and almost total lack of respect for humanity and on the other hand for its brilliant performances and knife-sharp precise film-making. And as such, "Going Places" is like a big, beautiful Chocolate Labrador puppy that wags its tail when you approach but snarls and bites you when you get close.

5.0 out of 5 stars Open Mind - Loved it
Les Valseuses is a Classic French film and you need an open mind, as it could easily offend, otherwise it is beautifully shot, funny and the sort of story line you won't find anywhere else outside of the French film industry, I found it quite arty as well as entertaining (part of me feels a pang of guilt at enjoying the movie as it has scenes that are just odd, bizarre and downright wrong, having said that I also like a film called Bad Santa which is nothing like this movie but makes me crease with laughing) Hard to believe Les Valseuses is so old but it remains undated and every bit as enjoyable as when I saw it 20 years ago, I think the relationship betwix the two unlikely friends amuses me the most, just looking at the way they walk sets me off, what a pair of clowns, the only truly shocking part of the film which i dislike is the violent end of the lady they pick up from the prison, unpleasant to say the least ! so to summarise you will laugh if you do not take political correctness too serious and have are not a strong womens lib supporter, slightly pervey sniffing of girls pants may disturb some, and the incident on the train but hey - it's only a film,

5.0 out of 5 stars Große Lausbuben
