Product Description

Jacques Deray (The Outsider) directed this gritty seventies action-classic featuring an iconic cast which includes Jean-Louis Trintignant (The Conformist), Ann-Margret (52 Pick-Up), Roy Scheider (Marathon Man), Angie Dickinson (Dressed to Kill), Michel Constantin (The Cop), Umberto Orsini (Violent City) and Ted de Corsia (The Killing) as they battle each other for their lives from the back alleys of downtown Los Angeles to the posh mansions of Beverly Hills. Trintignant is a hit man imported from Paris to kill L.A.’s biggest mafia boss. His unknown employer: the mafia boss’s own son and the son’s beautiful wife (Dickinson). Having done his job, the hit man looks for his reward. It comes, in the form of another hit man (Scheider), sent in to kill him and thus remove any links to the murder. Sexy Ann-Margret is Trintignant’s only ally as he and Scheider play a murderous game of cat-and-mouse. Nail-biting suspense, exciting high-speed chases and one of the most unique and climactic gun battles ever filmed are only part of The Outside Man, boasting an ultra-cool score by Michel Legrand (The Thomas Crown Affair). This special edition includes both the English and French versions of the 1970s thriller.

Special Features:
• Newly Restored – From 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historians Howard S. Berger, Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson
• Includes the Uncut Versions of THE OUTSIDE MAN (In English) and UN HOMME EST MORT (In French)
• Theatrical Trailers (Both Versions)
• Two Dual-Layered BD50 Discs
• Optional English Subtitles

This film didn't get the distribution and publicity it should've gotten. Good plot /script, acting, and casting, make this
film a real nail biter. Ann - Margret renders a compasionate performance, as due lead man Jean-louis Trintigant and of course the always compelling and driven Roy Shieder, and Angie Dickinson. The other character in the film is the use of Los Angeles, in the 70's.

Really glad I found this dvd. Was unaware of it. Roy Scheider is great in this. Also has great cast. Ann Margret, Angie Dickinson, Alex Rocco, Talia Shire. You will find yourself rooting for the Frenchman in this double crossing movie about two hitmen.

[THE OUTSIDE MAN - 1974 - Widescreen presentation - Directed by Jacques Deray] Seeing as how most of the other reviews are for the VHS edition of this flick, or penned by fans of Ann Margret (which I am as well, and fault no one for that), I thought I'd add a few remarks about the new MGM Limited Edition release currently available.

No attempt has been made by the studio to remaster, enhance or improve the print utilized here - it's prefaced with the statement, "This film is presented using the best print available", which isn't all that bad, actually, but in the era of blu ray and remastering, it's not all that great either. The audio is more than adequate for a film from this era, but the video colors range from a bit 'hot' in some of the outdoor scenes, of which there are many, to weak and spotty contrast in certain indoor and night sequences, and an overall flatness to the picture as a whole. Again, this shouldn't turn you away from watching, renting or buying this flick if you've got an interest, but there are no superlatives to encourage you to do any of those things either. But, that said, it is a solid yet anomalous movie with a great cast and a European ending as opposed to a Hollywood conclusion, which made it more attractive to me.

The strange thing is, in spite of the excellent cast, no actor really makes the film their own - everyone is good, but no one is given enough screen time to dominate, or is ever established as the true central character or powerful enough to chew up the scenery to make it theirs either. 'Not necessarily a bad thing, but a bit peculiar given the talents involved. Jean-Louis Trintignant would appear the central figure, but his English isn't good enough to warrant giving him a ton of dialogue, as his accent is strong. Americans know him for his role in 'The Conformist' as well as 'And God Created Woman', the film that brought Brigitte Bardot international fame, but he's been in many a formidable French flick through the years. Roy Scheider, in a rare role as a bad guy hit man, has almost no dialogue whatsoever, which is a bit of a waste. Angie Dickenson has a scene in the beginning and one or two at the films conclusion, but is severely underutilized. That leaves Ann Margret, who is captivating in the scenes she's in, both sexy and emotive, but I wish she was in more scenes too. So we have a remarkable cast without anyone being unmistakably remarkable, and I think it has to do with the French writers, directors, cinematographers and additional cast members. Umberto Orsini also has a role on par with the rest of the cast; again unremarkable. Alex Rocco plays the same role he's played his entire life, a bodyguard and muscle enforcer for Orsini, whose presence is felt only at the end of the film.

The script is solid, the action firm, it's never dull and concludes nicely for a European crime drama (in spite of the American cast), and is a pleasurable unpolished gem from that era - the other reviewers have already mined the plot, so there's no need for a re-hash from me - I'd recommend this movie to those who appreciate this genre and timeframe without hesitation. Just don't expect an impressive print for a limited release that carries a fairly hefty pricetag. 4 stars.

    Ordered
"The Outside Man" with Roy Schieder..( You know..from JAWS )
and it is amazingly "old school" cool.
No computer generated special "effects", and
Roy Schieder is a "hit man", playing the "bad guy"
as opposed to his usual "good guy" roles.
He is AWESOME. Ann Margret is a hottie, with a fake blond wig
no doubt! After you see this, watch "the seven ups" with Roy Schieder,
    it is amazing.

This masterpiece needs a gorgeous blu-ray remaster, it's intense and elegant from start to finish, a perfect 70s relic that needs to be seen and savored.

I bought this film after watching The Great Silence. The leading French actor that portrayed Silence is also in this film. He portrays a hitman sent to the U.S. from France to kill an American racketeer. After committing the murder, he has a difficult time getting out of the U.S and back to France. This film features Ann Margret, probably at the height of her beauty and sex appeal as a stripper who helps him. It also features Roy Scheider (Jaws) as the worst hitman in the history of cinema.

I saw this movie in 1974 as a double bill with Badlands. The shoot out at Forest Lawn is a classic, but the whole theme of a Frenchman coming to terms with the reality of LA is very funny even though it is a black thriller at heart.
