Directed by Harry Keller (The Female Animal) with Edward Andrews (Elmer Gantry), Les Tremayne (The Fortune Cookie) and Jack Albertson (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory).

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2020It is very odd that I ordered this movie a few days before John Saxon died. And now I watched it after his death.
That is very telling in such a strange way. I got this movie because I am collecting all of Esther Williams films.
The great MGM swimming star does not do one of her great swimming musical numbers in this thriller, but she does a fairly good acting job. This is one Star who had charisma that jumps off of the screen so she didn't need all of that 'acting' like you see today. Stars of the Golden Age didn't need all of that deep acting. They had CHARISMA in spades. I don't know how successful this film was when it came out in 1956 but is an interesting film throughout.
The only problem was that half way thru the film you could easily tell who the killer was and the picture on the back of the DVD case gave it all away anyway. What a stupid move that was on TCM to have produced it this way. Or whoever was responsible for that picture on the back of the case.
One actor I never could stand was Edward Andrews. He was always such a pompous ass in most of the character parts he was played in and he certainly is an ass in this one.
And TCM or whoever was responsible for making this movie on DVD could have done a better job in the print. It looked like a poor VCR tape. The colors almost blended together. Yes I've made a lot of complaints here but I gave it 5 stars because it is a good movie and it's always a pleasure to see Esther Williams with or without a bathing suit.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2013I've seen most of her films but this is now my very first Esther Williams movie added to my new Old Hollywood DVD collection. So very glad that I bought this from Amazon based on the positive reviews that I read here.
Esther Williams is absolutely fantastic in this movie! I LOVE that this is so completely different than all of her beautiful MGM films she is best known for. Such a wonderful performance! Beautiful as ever! And after watching this and even though the content of the story is dark & scary, her facial reaction & responses from time to time are priceless! She & her character cracked me the heck up in those subtle, brief glimpses! She's brilliant!
I found it very interesting to see how the content/theme of this film was spoken about and handled back then in 1956. And though I admire her nobility in her character in the film, unfortunately we cannot have that in today's world, very sad to say.
Back to Esther Williams, the actress. It really breaks my heart that we lost out on so many more films that could have been, had she not decided to retire at such a young age at the request of her love.
For me, I think one of the biggest missed opportunities is that Esther Williams & Rock Hudson never made films together!! With their beauty & talent & style of acting, Esther Williams and Rock Hudson would have been a phenomenal pairing on screen!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2025I looked for this movie on firestick but it was not available , so I found it on amazon . I hadn't seen it since I was young and I really enjoy some of the oldies . So I just had to see it again . Thanks for carrying it .
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2013Esther Williams is best known for her swimming roles but in this movie she doesn't go near the water, proving that she can act without her trademark swimming scenes. The high school scenes bring back a lot of memories of the way schools looked at one time. Not only the school but the football team uniforms and helmets as well as the cheerleading uniforms. An entertaining mystery that is not too complicated. This is the movie that introduced John Saxton to the screen. good copy! Another good movie from the 50s.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2013I watched this movie about 8 or 9 years ago and I had been searching for it ever since. I was so happy that Amazon had the movie that I ordered it on the spot. I am in my 60's and this movie is very nostalgic for me. They don't make them like this anymore. I am also a collector of movies from my childhood.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2013This film is trashy fun from the overheated 50's. Not going into any "artistic" merits or demerits, the DVD offered here with a 2012 release date, should be a disappointment for HD flat screen owners. Though presented in its theatrical 1:85 wide screen aspect ratio, the DVD is NOT ANAMORPHIC: you have to use the Wide Stretch button on your remote in order to cover the entire screen. This from TCM of all companies. Also, this Universal print tends to favor the blue hues, with over saturated smudgy color. You feel the need to wear glasses in order to watch it. Three stars only because of the DVD presentation and not the film which is an outstanding barrel of laughs - some very serious issues very clumsily dealt with.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2023Thanks
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2022After a totally botched DVD release, The Unguarded Moment gets an excellent Blu-ray transfer courtesy of Kino. It's really great to see this outstanding movie looking so good at last. This is a really hard hitting story and I don't want to give anything away other than to say Esther Williams does a great job of acting and creepy Edward Andrews is in the role he was born to play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed film
I watched this film as a child and it always stuck in my mind. I never caught it on television again so I thought I’d get a copy once and for all, obviously hoping I would like it this time round. I am very pleased I did because I enjoyed it. Would recommend it if you like watching the oldies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst picture quality ever
Although I had never heard of this film, research indicated that I would enjoy it so I went ahead and bought it. The DVD arrived yesterday and I wacked in in my machine straight away for a look. Imaging my disappointment when I saw what could only be described as the worst picture quality I have ever seen on a DVD. It is like the poorest quality video you've ever seen. Blurry, grainy and with really weird colour. I've never left a review here before but this DVD was so bad I just had to warn other people that are thinking of buying this title. Don't say you weren't warned. The one star is for the film which is probably pretty good if you could watch it. I tried it in both my DVD players and it was just as bad in both.

4.0 out of 5 stars Esther Williams out of the water and doing quite well
A high school teacher (Esther Williams) has been receiving anonymous sexually suggestive notes from a student. After a bungled rape attempt by the student (John Saxon), she reports it to the school authorities but she finds that no one believes her and she becomes the victim when it is suggested that she was the one who came onto him. Rape as a subject was seldom used in movies prior and during the 1950s. This somewhat awkward attempt (based on a story co-written by actress Rosalind Russell) is an intriguing effort that avoids sensationalism for the most part and treats its subject seriously yet it plays out more like a "damsel in distress" thriller than a genuine examination on the subject. Its psychology is rather simplistic by contemporary standards. Williams in a rare dramatic role is quietly effective, giving lie to the perceived notion that she couldn't act out of water. Directed by Harry Keller. With George Nader, Edward Andrews, Jack Albertson, Les Tremayne, Eleanor Audley, Edward Platt, Dani Crayne and Diane Jergens.
The Oden DVD is an anamorphic wide screen transfer (about 1.75) but it's very soft looking and could use some remastering to sharpen the picture.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Fish Out Of Water
Esther Williams who was an Olympic swimmer was big in movie musicals in swimming spectaculars in the late 40's early 50's. Here she plays a straight dramatic role as a teacher who is receiving notes from a student headed "Dear Teacher" with sexual innuendos aimed at her. At the same time there is a homicidal sex fiend on the prowl. John Saxon (Enter The Dragon) appears in an early starring role as a suspect.
Not a great movie but quite entertaining. The ending could have been a lot better.
