Product Description
After one of its lead actors (cherub-faced action icon Alexander Fu Sheng) unexpectedly died midway through production, master director Lau Kar-leung (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin) retooled his latest martial arts epic, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, as the ultimate action spectacular in tribute to the fallen star.
Loosely based upon the legendary Yang dynasty chronicled in Chinese folklore, the film starts as the family patriarch and all but two of his sons are brutally wiped out in a bloody battle. One surviving son (Fu Sheng) returns to his mother and two sisters, deeply traumatized; the other (Gordon Liu) escapes and joins a nearby monastery while in hiding. Once he learns his sister (Kara Hui) has been captured by their enemies, however, the warrior-turned-monk realizes he must renounce his peaceful ideals in order to mount a rescue mission and avenge his family.
Made during the legendary Shaw Brothers studio's twilight years as a filmmaking powerhouse, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter is often regarded as director Lau’s masterpiece, as elegiac and suffused with anguish as it is thrillingly violent (not least in its bone-crunching, teeth-smashing climax).

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2012Well lets see.... There are over 800 Shaw Brothers movies and of that, maybe 50 cut the list as worth watching for one reason or another. Of that number, less than 10 will make the cut as excellent Kung Fu. But the top 5.... woof! The fighting has to be second to none. Here is a case where the story does not necessarily kill the movie if it is bad.
Well, what could be that phenominal. Practicing myself since 1972 and being a second generation Bruce Lee instructor, it takes alot. Just hold these Gordon Liu movies alongside any other fight scenes in any other Shaw Brothers Movies and the timing, speed, strength, and stage presence will pale.
Quite simply, It is 36th Chamber of Shaolin for training, Heores of the East for the most amazing choreographed fight scenes, and showcasing real Hung Gar Gung Fu vs. Judo, Karate Ninjitsu, tasseled spear vs. spear, 3 sectional vs. nunchaku and sai, Samurai Sword vs. broadsword and butterfly swords vs. sai.
But!! if you want to see the tasseled spear used beyond what you saw in Heroes of the East, then 8 diagram pole fighter is the 3rd movie to put in your collection.... Period! The story is pulsating and dark. It is devastating in its violence. And Gordon Lius' use of the tasseled spear is simply the best pole work you will see. And I am not talking about spectatcular Wu Fu kung fu movies using Wushu. I am referring to shear insane, ballistic and angry-vengeful fighting. You would think the wood on the spear was going to explode from the shear power with which Gordon Wields it. It is what it is "The best tasseled spear work put on film. Out of 1200 or so total old school kung fu movies made. Even it its not your favorite story, as a study in REAL Spearwork you will never need to view another person wielding one to get your entertainment.
Want the last 2 on my list to bring in the top 5 for Sheer real fighting? Well its also Gordon Lius'. Shaoin vs. Wu Tang... with tons of great fights and one of the best opening Shaw Brothers credits. And, fifth on our list of simply the best top 5 is.....Well... there is no 5th. The fighting and training in these 4 movies are stand alone. However, Fists and Guts has one of the best weapons fight scenes midway through. That fight looks like it was choreographed into Heroes of the East.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2024The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter is certainly a top tier Kung Fu movie and the Arrow release is packed full of extras and the film itself looks incredible!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2013I bought this on an old vhs bootleg about 12 years ago and swore if they ever remastered this movie i would buy it again. I never thought the day would come but it did. The picture and sound quality is superb. All the shaw bros movies that they remastered will be worth getting on blu-ray because shaw bros are miles above other old school kungfu films. This one stars Gordon Liu and Alexander Fu sheng as the lone survivers of ill fated mission when the leaders of the yang army are betrayed and ambushed by the mongals. This is one of my favorite Gordon Liu films but then most of his shaw bros movies to me are 5 star epics. It has some of the most breath taking kungfu scenes ever filmed. This move also has one of the best finales i have ever seen. It will leave even the most hard core old school kungfu fans satisfied. Its hard to believe Fu Sheng was going to be the main star and not Liu. Fu Sheng died while shooting this film and they had to rearrange it for Gordon. They did an amazing job. The score that they used in this movie was also great. It was beautiful and it really set the tone and mood for the film. Like the "36th Chamber Of Shaolin",(another great musical score) i noticed they didnt rehash it and use it in other shaw bros movies. This movie is also uncut. If you have the Crash Cinema version of this movie you will know what i'm talking about. This dvd is worth getting. Dragon Dynasty hasn't released anything since 2011. I hope they didnt go out of business. There are tons more shaw bros movies i would like to see released on dvd and blu-ray.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2020First thing- if you don’t have an all region blu player, don’t get this. It’s region B.
I have to say about all of these films transferred to blu- this one, 36 Chambers, Five Deadly Venoms, etc, to me it’s like seeing them the first time. Having seen them growing up on low res TV screens or rarely in a theater, usually badly projected. Even on DVD, many of the transfers were less than clean. It’s like being able to see it for real- the amazing intricacy in the built sets, the depth of color, the sense of cinematography that got lost. It’s quite fascinating to see the film in its native tongue, but you can also have it dubbed for nostalgia’s sake. There’s a commentary, and it’s really quite good.
I won’t review the film. It’s Golden Age Shaw Brothers with Gordon Liu doing what he does best: beating evil down in the name of the Shaolin. If this is the kind of film that you love as I do, this is one of the best of its kind.
Some gorgeous box art too. Worth it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2010I love the dragon dynasty series, is a great conduct to discovering great Chinese films. Although I must admit that the last few offers had been lacking in greatness or are a repackage from the dimension versions, not this film. Is entertaining, is a fun action pack tour de force and one of Gordon Liu's excellent performances. I highly recommend this to old school Kung Fu fans and newcomers alike since the film is quite entertaining. Also I think this film is way better than the 36th chambers sequels. If you're a fan of Gordon Liu don't miss this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the same product in photo of advertisement
88 films did an amazing job with this release, The film and restoration is all 5 stars. My only problem is that this copy is not the Limited edition copy that's used as the product photo. I naturally assumed I was getting the 0 slip cover and poster that comes with the limited release only to get the regular copy without the poster. Product is incorrectly advertised.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best kung fu movies I've ever seen
I like this movie equally as much as The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin. North American audiences will recognize the star of the film, Gordon Liu, from both of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies (although he played different roles in both movies). The story and action are phenomenal. This edition of the movie is in anamorphic widescreen and includes original Mandarin and English audio tracks as well as English and Spanish subtitles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Klassiker.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films ever about.......(click bait)
88 films Blu-ray review
Anyone with a passing knowledge of either Gordon Liu or Lau Kar-Leung will have heard of this. Made in the Shaw Brothers winter of their lifespan, this is held up as one of the companies best ever. Yes its action packed, yes its climax is just incredible but the film is way deeper than that and its only upon watching it for the second time I realised what the film is really about.
The story centres around around the Yeong family who are trapped on Golden Beach and face an absolute slaughtering. The father is killed (don't worry this isn't a spoiler) and 5 of his 7 sons die, 2 do not. The opening is brutal, violent and bloody, I think this is deliberate on Kar-leung's part, its disorientating and if you happen to have the English dub on, very annoying.
The film centres around what happens to the other 2 sons after this event, 6th son played by Alex Fu Sheng and 5th son played by Gordon Liu. This is where the film absolutely excels - Fu Sheng returns home to the family completely traumatised by what has happened and Liu, who incidentally ran away unable to cope with the horror of the battle - find religion and becomes a monk. None of Fu Sheng's family can understand why he shouts and screams all the time and the question why he isn't going out to get revenge and at the same time they mourn the loss of Liu who has gone missing.
I won't go into any more detail about the rest of the film as I don't want to ruin what is in essence a film about post traumatic stress disorder and its brilliantly done. From what I have read, Fu Sheng was tragically killed off set whilst the film was being made which forced Kar-leung to rescript the whole thing and when you realise that, the whole thing takes on a much more emotive tone.
The training of Liu i becoming a monk is very different from 36th Chamber but much like the aforementioned film, what he learns has an impact on the climax. The action is superb Kara Wai (Hui) as the sister joins Liu for what is one of the most gripping end sequences in any film. Kung Fu movies get knocked by those who don't know because of bad voice acting and lip synching- this is up there with any Hollywood movie that deals with similar subject matter.
The picture is gorgeous to look at, transfer superb, music wonderful and I love what 88 films have been doing in restoring these old films. The extras are a bit thin on the ground for this one, but as this for me is in my top 5 of all time, that doesn't matter.
You need to pick this up soon if you haven't because as it says on the 88 Films website, once they are gone, they are gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I also kick like kung-fu flicks by Run Run Shaw"
One of the best kung-fu flicks ever let alone one of the best Shaw Brothers productions! You will not be disappointed. Great transfer.
