Jayne Mansfield stars in Frank Tashlin’s sparkling CinemaScope feast— a comedic jukebox musical featuring rock-and-roll trailblazers.
Now Available on Blu-ray & DVD
In 1956, Frank Tashlin brought the talent for zany visual gags and absurdist pop-culture satire that he’d honed as a master of animation to the task of capturing, in glorious DeLuxe Color, a brand-new craze: rock and roll.
This blissfully bonkers jukebox musical tells the story of a mobster’s bombshell girlfriend—the one and only Jayne Mansfield, in a showstopping first major film role—and the washed-up talent agent (Tom Ewell) who seeks to revive his career by turning her into a musical sensation. The only question is: Can she actually sing?
A CinemaScope feast of eye-popping midcentury design, The Girl Can’t Help It bops along to a parade of performances by rock-and-roll trailblazers—including Little Richard, Fats Domino, Julie London, Eddie Cochran, the Platters, and Gene Vincent—who light up the screen with the uniquely American sound that was about to conquer the world.
Special Edition Features
- Interviews with Mansfield, Little Richard, and filmmaker John Waters
- New interview with Mansfield biographer Eve Golden
- New conversation about the film's music, audio commentary, on-set footage, and more

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024If you love rock from the '50s and screwball comedy, I recommend this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2024This movie is a take off of the movie Born Yesterday with Judy Holliday.
The difference is in this movie the boyfriend hires someone to make his lady a famous singer. In Born Yesterday the boyfriend hires someone to teach his girlfriend sophistication.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2022Yeah, it’s a silly, superficial, live-action cartoon… but what do you expect from Warner cartoon director Frank Tashlin? It’s a fun ride. Worth it just for the 1956 musical performances of Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Fats Domino, The Platters, and of course The Chuckles are rocking the accordion! Finally available on Blu Ray, nicely restored by Criterion with commentary, 2 booklets, lots of bonus features, and the songs are captioned too, if you wanna sing along. Let’s hope Criterion will do “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter” soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zeitkritische Satire und Rock & Roll Märchen
"A Wop Bop Alu Bop A Wop Bam Boom....."
(Little Richard's Urschrei des Rock & Roll)
Mit "Be-Bop-A-Lula" (Gene Vincent & the Blue Caps), Twenty Flight Rock" (Eddie Cochran), "Rocking Is Our Business" (The Treniers), "You'll Never, Never Know" (The Platters) und "Blue Monday" (Fats Domino) gibt es weitere Rockstandards und Welthits.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most To Say The Least
A wonderful movie that retains the magic I first witnessed in 1957. If only they - the movie big wigs and the hirelings I guess. Had restored the 50s coverage that they cut out for 60s screenings. I suspect to offer more comedy and less rock'n'roll. Oh the pain the crime the outrage. Where did the solo from Eddie Cochran's '20 Flight Rock' go. Where Eddie rocked from foot to foot as he played. And 'Be Bop A Lula' in the rehearsal room where as they rocked. The framed paintings of US presidents went crashing to the floor. Richard lost classic moments as did many of the others. And where's the trailer that showed newsboy ' Fog Voice' Wilson ( as I recall) singing a snatch of 'Blue Suede Shoes'. By the way me and the gang now. Like the old men now dug and dig The Treniers. I can only hope than one day/year/decade this movie is restored. Fingers crossed.

5.0 out of 5 stars La Blonde et moi
