- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2025Very good movie about the relationship between a man and a boy
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2024With some lukewarm reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, Joaquin Phoenix, to me, is an instant shoe-in for at least a decent movie, and the preview looked very good.
But wow, to me this movie was next level. Joaquin did not disappoint nor did the girl who played his sister. Quick sidebar: I remembered her as a child actor (namely from You've Got Mail) and absolutely loved her. Her acting capabilities definitely has carried through into adulthood along with Joaquin's.
But let me tell you about the child: He blew my mind! They all did, but I expected it from the grown-ups.
I have a 4 and 1/2-year-old and the child who played the role of a 9-year-old in this movie did such an amazing job. I definitely forgot, from time to time, that I wasn't just watching life happen on camera. It was an actor in a movie. He made me think of my own child so MANY times in this film and how he might have reacted in the shoes of the child on the screen. There really are not words I can put on this review to tell you how good the acting was and what this movie did to my heart and soul. All I can say is I recommend it to you and everyone I know, especially parents.
Some people might be off put by the black and white film. I thought it added to the movie and its emotional vibe. There wasn't much music, but when there was music, it was beautiful, appropriate and fitting.
If you are into warm and fuzzy, but fairly cerebral and not trite, you will enjoy this movie. If you are the type that's always waiting for something to happen, this movie is not for you. Go watch a Bruce Willis movie... Or whatever the kids are into these days. =)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2024Joaquin is stellar in his most “normal” role in a while (or ever).
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2024Although I'm wondering whether it's intentional to leave the viewers a bit of sad feeling in the end and, if so, why? The black & white also adds to that.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2024Good for cryin
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2024touching film, you can't help think about Joaquin as the young boy, as though he is working through his own childhood while making the film. open and truthful
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2024Must own this for rewatching and observing loving children and yourself honestly, not condescendingly or patronizingly. Another kind of love story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional drama that gets you thinking
Cmon cmon is not my usual type of film. It's a drama film that I do like but has to be done right for me.
This one hits that mark. The acting is wonderful and the bond between johnny and his nephew is believable and well acted.
Joaquin is a fantastic actor anyway but his delivery within the emotional scenes was brilliant and believable.
Woody for such a young actor was fantastic and only anoying in the sence of when he is supposed to be in the film. His acting in this is amazing. The chemistry between the actors was spot on and the emotional acting hit the spot and never felt forced.
The film deals with family drama and the question of the future in his job. And some of the lines in the film from both adults and young teens leaves things to ponder over.
The film is shot in black and white and not to over artistic shots on general are rather static but it fits with the film well.
"Whatever you plan on happening, never happens. Stuff you would never think of happens."
A great drama and one I'm glad to have in my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful... just beautiful...
Cannot praise this movie enough. Whilst Joaquin Phoenix is brilliant, Woody Norman is even better. A very rare gem of a film indeed.
