Paranoia mounts (as does the body count) in this semi-satirical shocker based on the VR game; Milana Vayntrub, Glenn Fleshler, Catherine Curtin, Michaela Watkins, Michael Chernus also star. 97 min. - Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024I really enjoyed this movie. The main character is done well and is likable. The background characters are very tropey but still fun. Comedy is solid, but had some jokes that didn't land with me. The best part of the movie is the ever escalating discovery of who is the werewolf. And honestly didn't expect the outcome but enjoyed the ending and reveal. The At@T girl definitely needs more work she did great.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2022First off- this is not a movie for people without wit. You need wit to appreciate the jokes, plot lines, and character development. If you are still entertained by Marvel films in 2022- walk away this is not for you.
For the rest of us, this move is hilarious. If you have ever played the party game Werewolf then this is for you. I would not term this as overly political- not at all in fact. If you are a Maga Hatter you might hate this but otherwise it's barely in there for anything other than characterization of some of the townsfolk. This takes current events, fiction, an element of romance and turns it all into something fun.
Give it a shot. It's entertaining and not full of CGI- it has real plot, real character development, real settings. All things missing in most film today. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2022I went in with low expectations simply by judging the cover and seeing the IMDB score. Didn't read into it, and figured it'd be another C horror flick. Upon watching -- I was hit with that new style indie humor. I was ready to turn it off after a few minutes. Then I found myself impressed with the actors' abilities to pull of the type of humor this movie was aiming for. Instead of being irritated, I found it hilarious and clever. Out of curiousity to see others like it, I went under "related" and realized that this was the same director as "Scare Me" (A film I gave a 1-star rating) It's all in the nuances, I suppose. Perhaps this doesn't deserve 5 stars, but for being surprisingly good and for giving the other Josh Ruben movie 1 star; I think it's fair that I tip the scale.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2022The majority of this movie is all fun and games, with a silly cast and predictable but enjoyable writing. There's a cute manic pixie dream girl romantic interest for the Nice Guy ranger (main character) who has historically finished last. Their romance plays out as an undercurrent to the quirky violence throughout. We end with the twist that Ms. Quirky is actually the werewolf, and was playing up the manic pixie dream girl vibe to mock the main character for how easily he falls for the fantasy she weaves. It's a nice speech where she makes some great points, but of course she is actually a crazed murderer who is off her rocker. Some great subtle messaging that a legit (if hollow and watered down by Hollywood writers who do not understand the talking points they are referencing) feminist view point can only be held by violent, unhinged women. The main character (Nice Guy) then gets a rousing monologue about how he is so, so nice, and everyone wants him to be different, and women hate him because he's nice, but there is nothing wrong with being nice! and blah blah blah. Fully perpetuating an insane incel myth that literally leads to violence against women in the real world. We are made to root for him, this poor nice man who has been so hurt by women. Then in another twist, in the last 5 seconds of the movie, we see that he is actually regular sexist when he laughs at a joke from another character about a woman making them a sandwich. Certainly too little and definitely too late to combat the much stronger messaging we were subjected to for much longer than 5 seconds. And most definitely lost on men who are already susceptible to the incel messaging and believe women belong in the kitchen already. One could draw a cynical conclusion that the writers aimed to cast a wide net, capturing women with the monster's speech about sexism and men with the trials and tribulations of the Nice Guy, then throwing in a woman with a crossbow at the end that says "Make your own damn sandwhich" (who btw is not actually shown using the crossbow! the men still live when the credits roll, leaving anyone to draw whatever conclusion they like) to recapture any women who were put off by blatant sexism. You can't show the men winning after that comment if you want to keep the female audience happy, but you can't show them getting killed if you want to keep your male audience happy. All in all, a cowardly written film with dangerous messaging. 2 stars for the fun and silly first 3/4 of the movie. I would recommend this movie if you both hate women casually and enjoy comedy horror.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and fun movie
This is a black comedy whodunnit/who's the werewolf story. Performances are very good and the story is decently done. It's not as gory as you might expect and they could have done a little explaining about a couple of the characters but they're small complaints.
