- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2025Definitely a wild ride of a movie! If you like Nic Cage, don't miss this one. The film is not his best and quite weird...lol.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2022I bought this sight-unseen, mainly because I couldn't find any place to stream it online and I happen to be a fan of both Sion Sono and Nick Cage.
Obviously, the actual film is a niche film, which appeals to certain types of fans - of this director, or main actor, as well as the sort of supernatural-action hybrid that has enthralled underground film audiences for decades. This reminds me so much of one of the "midnight films" I'd see at any one of a number of NYC film festivals in the past.
The DVD itself is good quality, a nice metal case, and some extras like the behind-the-scenes of making the film. Good stuff! I'm really glad I purchased this one, I found it well worth my money.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2024While I do love Nicolas Cage and weird over the top movies, this movie is, sad to say, not his best. Which is really disappointing, because honestly this movie had all the makings of a crazy cult classic. It's got Nicolas Cage playing a criminal who is tasked with finding and rescuing the daughter of a a local governor in some strange post-apocalyptic samurai town, all the while outfitted in a suit with explosives in his neck, arms, and testicles that will explode if he doesn't deliver her back home in 5 days. Combine that with not only cage's crazy performance, but also Bill Moseley hamming it up as a greedy warlord and japanese action star Tak Sakaguchi(best known for his role in "Versus") playing his right hand samurai soldier, and you'd think this would be an instant classic. Unfortunately, the movie is just... well... it's just too weird. the setting and worldbuilding don't make any sense. Like this film seems to take place in what I think is some sort of post-apocalyptic setting but it's very unclear. The town we start off in is made up of these edo period japanese buildings that have a mixture of stereotypical japanese townspeople mixed in with old wild west american looking people with modern day cars and police departments and none of it goes together at all. Like don't get me wrong, I'm all for combining different genres and ideas, and the set design is certainly unique, but none of it really gels well. It's like seeing a bunch of different aesthetics thrown together without any of it making sense. It all just feels very nonsensical, and that's kind of how the story plays out too. Nicolas Cage goes out into this place called the "Ghostland" to rescue this girl and along the way he runs into lots of... well, just weird stuff. Too much happens for me to explain here, but suffice to say, this is a very surreal, artsy film where the story and narrative don't make too much sense and are very incoherent. It's like one of those weird Alejandro Jodorowsky films where it's clear that the filmmakers didn't really care about the internal logic of the film and just wanted to have some surreal visuals on display. Thing is though, the visuals have such a cluttered mess of different aesthetics that they're not really that good to look at and certainly don't make the movie worth watching. That combined with the incoherent story make this movie a very hard sell, even for the biggest of Nick Cage fans. Now all of that could be forgiven if the actual movie was at least entertaining and fun to watch, but that sadly is where the movie falls short the most. Looking past all the weird visuals, the story is your basic "hero must rescue damsel in distress" story without any good or interesting characters. The characters are quirky and there's a lot of overacting going on, but all of it is so bizarre that I couldn't get invested in any of them. It honestly feels like a film that was written by A.I. Everybody is a caricature who just screams and shouts their dialogue real loud and awkward. The filmmakers might have been trying to have it be quirky, but it just comes off as weird and uninteresting. For most of the movie there isn't much action. It's mostly just Nick Cage going from place to place where he meets weird people who shout incoherent dialogue that sort of makes up a story. There is some fairly good action towards the end of the movie, but by that point I'd completely lost interest and the whole thing just felt dull without any characters or story to be invested in. All of that said, the one saving grace of this movie is, of course, Nicolas Cage. He does give a truly great unhinged performance in this movie and he is really the only entertaining thing in this film. There is a great scene where he gives a speech to a bunch of townspeople and it's equal parts hilarious and epic. Sadly, moments like that are few and far between. It's a great Nick Cage performance in a completely nonsensical and incoherent film that ultimately I just can't recommend. The film doesn't know what it wants to be and it's too incoherent to be invested in.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2022I freaking love this crazy movie! Great in 4K gotta have all the Nicholas cage movies. Definitely worth the buy!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2024No disc in case.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2022Not sure what I just watched. Aside from the crazy, the music was interesting, as were the wild fight scenes. I am a fan of Nic Cage, but this trip is very strange. I can't decide if I want to see it again, or if I just want to trash this...thus the low rating. There are much better Cage films.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review Prisoners of the Ghostland blu-ray USA
Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021)
Edición USA publicada por RLJE Films con carátula exterior de cartón en relieve.
Disco Región: A
Puntuación IMDB: 4.2/10
Duración: 102 min
Pantalla: 2:35:1
Audio: Inglés DTS-HD 5.1
Subtítulos: Inglés y Español
EXTRAS:
- The Making of Prisoners of The Ghostland (08:14 min)
- Movie Still Photo Gallery
- Behind the Scenes Photo Gallery

1.0 out of 5 stars
