THE MARTIAL ARTS CULT CLASSIC FROM THE SHAW BROTHERS STUDIO!

Directed by Cheh Chang (The One-Armed Swordsman, Five Venoms), this kinetic and highly influential Kung Fu picture, mixes traditional storytelling with more modern presentation techniques, layering acrobatics, the use exotic weaponry and quick as lightening fight sequences to produce a sure fire entertaining hit, which no serious collector of martial arts movies can be without.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2017If you are a martial arts film fan, then this movie is a MUST!! I love kung fu films, particularly the Wuxia genre, which refers to stories that take place in ancient China. They have swords, spears, staves, axes, hammers, brass rings,.....wielded by heroes in amazing costumes and exaggerated hair styles. The best of the lot are the ones produced by the Shaw Brothers and directed by the legendary Chang Cheh. And to further break it down, the "venom" films would top my list. But if I had to choose one, and its not easy, it would have to be "The Flag of Iron" or "The Spearmen of Death". I'm sure everyone has heard this before, but this one has it all. I like Wuxia because of the incredible display of acrobatics by the highly skilled actors. The Iron Flag has non stop fighting, action and acrobatics. It stars "venom" favorites, Li Wang, Sheng Chiang and Phillip Kwok who is now a fight choreographer. Though its a simple revenge story, its actually quite involved with plenty of surprises and twists. And there is a lot of blood in this movie, not to mention a HIGH body count. What is fun about this film are the various assassins and their unique fighting styles and techniques, some of which border on the silly. For me, the movie never got boring, even in the non fight sequences because of Chiang's and Kwok's believable friendship and charm. The title refers to the weapon's used by the "Iron Flag Clan". Its literally a flag with a spear tip. It sounds funny, but in the film, they make it work. A great kung fu flick, definitely worth a view.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2023I first saw this Shaw Bros.-produced film years ago during my teenage years. It was fun and exciting to watch. A true entertainment this action film was back then (and still is to this day). Now that I’m an adult, I do get a kick each time from watching the Kung fu film on DVD. It makes feel adventurously and martially inspired, as well as feeling young at heart. I’m so glad to have the DVD now. Thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2024Another classic gold , all your favorites from the movie 5 Deadly Venom are in this.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2013Four out of five might be a LEETLE excessive, but this is a good one. Its only real flaw is the not-so-tight scripting/pacing. Just past the halfway mark, it bogs down into a waist-deep mire - a battle of wits between the film's villains and protagonists, each waiting for the other's next move. And anticipating. And waiting. But then one of the best Venoms end fights saves it from disaster.
While it's easy to spot the slowest 25 minute stretch of the movie, several scenes throughout overstay their welcome. I'm used to Ni Kuang's scripts being a lot more streamlined, but this felt padded to its 2 hour runtime. A more typical 1.5 hours would have kept things moving briskly, so I have to wonder what director Chang Cheh and his crew were shooting for. Maybe a more "serious" movie? The intensity of the fights and the bizarre weapons (abacus of DOOM!) and uniforms, especially those of the Iron Flag Clan, give the action sequences a KID WITH THE GOLDEN ARM feel (with much tighter fight choreography), but the cat-and-mouse between Lu Feng and Kwok Choi keep things from having the same wildly fun atmosphere. Again, however, that end fight finishes things on a high note.
This is one of the three Shaws that I remember well from my childhood (along with 5 DEADLY VENOMS and KID WITH THE GOLDEN ARM - all Venoms flicks), although I saw it as SPEARMAN OF DEATH. It's great to see it in this restored version - just use the slow parts to talk with other members of the audience and maybe get some snaction. Drinks with little flags in them, too, maybe.
As always, Chiang Sheng rocks. You'll believe a boy can fly.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2022The Flag Of Iron is a classic 1980 Shaw Brothers martial arts kung fu movie from director Chang Cheh. The movie stars a handful of the Venom Mob like Philip Kwok, Feng Lu, and Chiang Sheng in an action-packed masterpiece. This movie is a great showcase for Philip Kwok as he gets to show off his moves and abilities fighting off the 10 Assassins that were sent after him while he was exiled.
New cover, booklet and poster are great additions to the 88 Films Blu-ray release and also an audio commentary that is entertaining. Wish there were more extras but love this film overall!

Fun movie with plenty of action and energy and a lot of backstabbing plot maneuvers.
The video and audio quality is superb. If you want English language dubbing you got it. If you prefer original language with English subs (as I do) you got that choice as well. Audio commentary and other extras to enjoy.
A high quality case, original poster art and newly commissioned artwork as well on a reversible slip if you dig showing off your collection.
Can't go wrong with this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Génial
