One of the most memorable cult classics of the 80s!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025Loved it just as much as I did when I was a kid!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2021Great 80s film sword and sorcery epic that has some laughs but is not done as a comedy but is done in a serious tone. Younger kids should not really be watching this despite kids always having loved the edited TV aired versions. That's because there are some very risqué parts and barely there, or not even there clothing optional scenes. The original rating for this film was indeed PG and the rating is not present anywhere on this packaging. The packaging has the original poster artwork showing that appeared in Theaters in North America and other locations and the reverse is another cover option that has artwork that was used for the Australian release. The most well known artwork that is displayed outward when shrinkwrapped, that most will remember does indeed look higher end with the ring shown in the film. The alternate art that is also on the third disk, was used on one sheets for some locations around the world but looks less refined and Dar looks different almost like it was drawn to resemble another actor or to compare to Conan. Three disks total. The very fact we even have a 4k edition of this now is absolutely amazing. The last time most fans from the 80s probably watched this was probably on the horrible VHS that cropped off the sides of the picture of course since all TVs were 1:33 then. Now it's like an entirely different film. Sadly the original negative was completely lost and may not even exist anymore and even if it did, it was stored for many years in a garage in who knows how bad a condition. The interpositive of this film that was used for this all new 4k transfer is a very early identical copy of the original negative that was very well cared for and kept under proper conditions. Some restoration had to be done but given that this is more of a cult classic and not in the same class as say Casablanca or Gone with the Wind, it is astounding how great it looks. All natural grain is present and the dark scenes (of which Beastmaster has plenty) are clearer than they have ever been. The amount of detail has never been seen like it has here. The 5.1 audio really makes the surround come alive for some scenes while staying very subtle during others. This is a great film for any fantasy/sci-fi fan and an absolute must have for 80s movie fans. Worth every penny. I will close with a final reason why you simply must buy it: Tanya Roberts.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021First of all, The Beastmaster is one of the greatest sword and sorcery films ever made. Sadly, this film can be really hard to come by. Back in the 1980s and 1990s this movie was a staple on cable networks and could be found in every single VHS rental store in the country. Since the age of blu-ray, disc copies have become hard to find. However, this movie can be streamed on Amazon. For the collector of films on discs, this film is a must-have.
The movie follows the story of a lone barbarian warrior who has a psychic bond with animals. Traveling with a tiger fighting by his side, a falcon who scouts for him, and two ferrets who bail him out of trouble, he seeks revenge against an evil sorcerer. Epic fight scenes and spectacular practical effects combined with amazing cinematography and great acting make The Beastmaster a well-made film that pulls the viewer into the world of our protagonist, Dar.
The movie has only one flaw, the picture is sharper than ever, but it has age has given it a picture grain that is noticeable in some places of the film. This picture grain was not in any of the previous releases. The original negative of the film is supposedly lost and the new transfer had to be made from the interpositive. As stated earlier, the film looks better than ever, but I cannot but wonder if the film would have turned out better in the hands of a more reputable company such as Arrow video. I know for a fact that there are ways to digitally remove picture grain from a movie. However, as a whole, this is the best version of The Beastmaster to date in regards to overall picture quality. Hopefully, we will someday see Beastmaster 2 and Beastmaster III make a long-overdue blu ray release. The sequels never matched the scope and grandeur of the first film but they are certainly worth watching.
Fans of Conan the Barbarian (1980s) and The Lord of the Rings will absolutely love this gem of a movie. 10 out of 10
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024As good as Conan the Barbarian prt 2
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2022Vinnegar Syndrome released this classic and much-loved/broadcasted sword & sorcery film from 1982 directed by Don Coscarelli and starring Marc Singer as Dar, a young man who had been marked for death as a baby but was saved and raised in a village that is later raided and destroyed by the forces of an evil high priest (played by Rip Torn) whom Dar pledges to kill, aided by his power to communicate with animals and make them his allies. Also stars Tanya Roberts and John Amos.
Film looks absolutely superb in this 4K restoration, a huge upgrade from the 2005 Anchor Bay DVD, porting over those extras but also including many new ones like a second audio commentary with the director, and the co-writer/producer Paul Pepperman, and a second feature-length documentary about the film. This is a 3-disc set, with the first disc being the UHD (which I am currently unable to view) the second disc the Blu-ray, and the third one with the film having updated color F/X that are really quite modest, and the bulk of the extras.
Excellent film is presented in an exemplary set that fans will appreciate (you may still want to keep that DVD which contained a small fold-out poster.)
