A perfectly average video game movie adaptation

A perfectly average video game movie adaptation
So far as movies based on video game properties go, this one is pretty mid-tier on every level. The story is fairly basic and doesn't really follow the games' mythos, bit the setpieces are fun eye candy. The major issue with this movie is its frantic editing. The extremely rapid cuts oftentimes obscure what's going on. Similarly to the Resident Evil movies, Monster Hunter plays it just a little too safe and is full of missed opportunities. If you're looking for a mindless popcorn flick, this might be for you.

First things first, you have to like sci-fi, no-real-plot action monster fantasy fighting shoot-em-up movies. If those kinds of movies aren't your thing, then automatically you'd give this a 2 star review, or 3 at best. But if you like the aforementioned...you'll love this.

Based on a video game, this movie has plenty of kick butt action. Special forces team put in a crazy teleport monster world situation? Check. Lot's of bullet casings being unloaded as said team tries to ineffectively fight off bulletproof monsters? Check. Is it unrealistic? Yeah. Is there no real plot? Yeah. Is it over the top? Yeah. Is Mila looking hot as ever kick some rear end? Heck Yeah!!

Like I said, if you like this kind of stuff, definitely worth the rent. If not, then go rent the Titanic or something LOL!!

This movie is based on the Monster Hunter series of games. The monsters are represented incredibly well. The "oh god, my puny earth weapons do nothing to these things" moments are also fantastic.

The Hunters? Eh.... they didn't quite get them right. In the movie, the Hunters are more like Ninjas with large weapons than what they actually are. In the games, the Hunters (i.e. NOT Mila's character) are descendants of people who had their genetics weaponized. The ancestors in question were designed to be incredibly strong, fast, and resilient.Think of the Custodes from Warhammer 40k. That's a good comparison. The reason why they were designed this way was because the Ancients (the builders of the tower in the movie) were at war with Elder Dragons. No, not Rathalos or Diablos. I'm talking about the big boys like Teostra, Lunastra, Gore Magala, Nergigante, Zorah Magdaros (who is literally a sentient volcano), etc. These big boys/big girls are sentient just as we are.

Why were the Ancients at war with them? Well. Remember that tower? Yeah, there were a lot of those. And they were all made with Elder Dragon bones. Pretty sure you'd be mad at people for slaughtering your kin and turning their bones into skyscrapers.

With all of that in mind, the Hunters HAD to be Superman without the laser beams and x-ray vision.

However the Hunters that -we-, the players/watchers, are familiar with had their strength diluted due to breeding with non-Hunters, but they're still on-par with an un-armored Spartan from Halo...... at their absolute weakest. For reference, a Spartan wearing no armor is still perfectly capable of literally turning your spine to powder in seconds.

The fight scene between the Hunter and Mila's character should have been over before it even started. Sure, he wasn't trying to end her. But on the same hand, he should have had her pinned on the ground pretty easily.

Note: The strength of Hunters varies wildly by this point in the game's/movie's timeline due to the dilution. Some are WAY stronger than others........ for instance...

In the games, the Admiral (who is in the movie portrayed by Ron Chinman) is capable of tearing chunks of the earth out from underneath him and using it as a tower shield, with his bare hands. He also doesn't even use weapons. He just fist fights every monster he comes across. The only one that upsets him is Rajang.... but that's okay, I get it. Rajang cheats.

In the movie, the most the Admiral does is swing a Switch Axe around and (SOMEHOW) performs a Charge Blade's attack with it. Repeatedly. He must have downloaded some cheat-weapon mods.

    ....Anyway. That's enough nitpicking.

TL;DR - Decent movie, even if it's a little slow compared to what you would actually expect from something related to Monster Hunter. Also is a mixed-bag when it comes to game vs. movie portrayals.

This was a a really good movie and the first I have ever written a review on. The reason why I rated this movie was for a couple reasons; one being that most of the bad reviews i've read were due to the fact that the movie didn't release on the correct date. Understandable, from a consumers point of view. That being said it does not make an accurate rating for the content of the movie itself and why I find this sad. The other reason is becuase I love stories and movies that have a fantasy flare to them, transmigration is an added plus.

The story is about a Ranger squad investigating the disapearence of what I imagine was a scouting or patrol team out in the desert. Their last comms is played by the CPT off of her recorder -vThe missing teams TL voice crackling on comms asking for assistance with a storm fast approaching. The recording crackles more as the TL says again he needs assistance before the comms goes dead...

It does not take long before history repeats itself and the Rangers find themselves caught in a similar storm. Once the dust clears they find themselves in a different envorment with mountains on the horizon. It has become evident that they are no longer where they ought to be. They make there way back toward the direction their FOB should be and come across a giant ribcage poking out of the sand. They do not have long to ponder or marvel at the shear wonder of such a thing as reality comes barreling toward them and their rescue mission turns into a mission of survival.

The action is well done as is the pacing of the story. The CG was also well produced and the actors embodied their characters to make the movie more immersive. I originaly thought this was a low budget film but if it was then these guys knew how to stretch a dollar cus I dont have any complaints to say about the quality of the film. After watching this movie I knew I wanted to see a sequel, one that was left open to occur based on the ending and after credit scene. My biggest concern is the negative reviews that were solely based on when they got to see or own the movie.

If you have seen the trailer and thought even for a second this might be interesting, buy it now... Thats all I have to say.
