- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025Great three d effects interesting movie
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019OK, so this is literally a live-action anime movie. The story is totally far-out and comes from a pretty tweaked imagination...but lots of anime movies are like that. It requires that you completely suspend your disbelief so that you can fully enjoy the ride they take you on. Be warned if you are one of those who tend to pick apart movies when you see something that goes against the laws of physics (like lightsabers maybe?), because this movie only rocks if you are able to put yourself into the context of the story being told. Forget everything you think you know. This movie will put an entirely new world in front of you that bears little resemblance to the world you live in.
Predator cities...now that's a crazy concept! But you must embrace that very concept, and all the other ramifications to society that would happen if predator cities existed, if you want to enjoy this movie. The idea of predator cities is totally unrealistic no matter how you slice it, but this isn't a story that will base much of its content on reality, so suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride!
I could literally see how this could be adapted scene-for-scene from an anime movie, but it turns out that there is no corresponding animated version. It's just this live action version that exists. But I could feel the anime story telling style throughout the movie, even down to facial expressions, poses, and camera angles. Even the dialogue was anime-like! And being a fan of anime since the 1970's, and therefore well-practiced at suspending my disbelief, I really did enjoy this movie. The first time I watched it I started to take note of how much it resembled anime storytelling, so I watched it again the next day to be sure. The second showing was even better than the first, and I picked up on tons of stuff that I missed during the first showing.
I guess the critics gave this movie a bad rating because they lack imagination. It took some serious imagination to come up with the setting for this movie, so it will take lots of imagination to be able to relate to it. If you like anime, especially the more creative and off-beat movies, you'll like this. Just remember that you are watching a fantasy movie about a fantasy future and you will enjoy the ride.
Enjoy!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025Yup, it's a movie on a disk. The disc did everything that it's supposed to do. And the movie played on my region 1 player.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2024Pretty good movie I was impressed with it the characters in the story
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2024The movie appeared new but the free movie certificate had long ago expired and I couldn’t get the upc to scan to pay for disc to digital. I could have just purchased it from the expired certificate bin at Walmart at least you know it’s expired.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024It's a very good and delightful movie. Glad I found it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2021Wow. Took me a while to pop this in after ordering. But, wow. The 3D is off-the-charts, with a depth and pervasiveness akin to Avatar. It's noticeable even in just the early close-up shots of the heroine.
The special effects are detailed, intricate and massive. Production and set design is imaginative and encompassing. I was surprised to read, afterward, that this film was made for only $100--150 million. It looks like a $200--250 million Marvel-style blockbuster.
Contrary to the critical lambasting and box office abandonment this film received upon its release, this was a fun, engaging ride from the first scene to the end. While it's not the deepest or most unexpected plot ever, there are plenty of films that go on to great success and critical acclaim with an equivalent structure or less. The character progressions were predictable, but were engaging and deep enough for this kind of film.
I'd always wanted to see this on the big screen, and I'm sorry now that I hadn't. The scale of this movie is off-the-charts, and those massive, moving cities must've been something.
In closing, the only things I can see that killed this at the box office must've been 'bad timing' (it had to face Spider-verse on opening, and Aquaman within a couple weeks), and probably some people thought the 'moving cities' concept absurd. I think the main actors did a great job, but it could've helped promotion to have someone in addition to Hugo Weaving to headline the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars It was worth the wait....
I have a habit of buying films then leaving them on the shelf for an age before finally getting around to watching them. Going to write this review I found I had owned this film, unwatched, for 2.5 years..... This happens, usually, because some films are so long I really have to be in the mood to commit the time required. At 2 hours and 8 minutes, this film was definitely in this category. However, once watched, I wished I had picked it up earlier!
Getting past my personal limitations, this is a beautifully shot film absolutely loaded with top quality digital special effects and a truly impressive Dolby Atmos soundtrack. It really isn't an original story but the setting for the story is, making it a predictable but rewarding film to watch. The acting is great and the pacing is breakneck, ensuring that the time just flew by without me realising it. Go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie. Highly recommended.
A nice dystopian movie: enough action to make it interesting, with a mild love story that gives a soft touch.
it is also different from other SCI-FI movie to get the attention of the audience. An original story line. Good acting and a good scenario on top of that.
