The cast seem uniquely suited to the characters they play.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2020The third season of The Crown begins with Queen Elizabeth II reviewing designs for new postage stamps that shift from depicting her as "Young Monarch" to, in her words, "Old Bag." That's a fitting start for a season that introduces some different actors: principally Olivia Coleman as the Queen, Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, and Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret. The transition is a bit premature, because in 1964, when Season 3 begins, the Queen was only 38, Prince Philip 43, and Princess Margaret 34, but it still works well because the acting, writing, and settings are as scintillating as ever.
The ten episodes in Season 3 run from 1964 to the Silver Jubilee in 1977. Those 13 years witnessed social turmoil and economic decline in Britain under Labour's Harold Wilson and the Tories' Edward Heath. They were also a period of turmoil for the House of Windsor, as the Queen's older children Charles and Anne grew into young adulthood, Princess Margaret and her husband the Earl of Snowdon's marriage became increasingly rocky, and Prince Philip continued to find himself constricted. The various episodes dealing with these issues are excellent, as are others that touch on the possibility of Royal involvement in a coup against the Wilson government (Charles Dance as Earl Mountbatten of Burma is superb), the final illness and death of the Duke of Windsor, the Apollo moon landing in 1969, and the Aberfan disaster of 1966 when faulty management of a coal tip caused a landslide that buried a school (this is the best episode, in my opinion.)
There are hints of future issues that will be covered in Season 4, as Charles, Anne, and Margaret's romantic affairs intensify, but most importantly, the confirmation of Queen Elizabeth II's eminent suitability for her role continues.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2024The best episode in my opinion was about the disaster at Aberfan in Wales in 1966 (disc 1, episode 3). Terrible tragedy which I recall reading about in 1966.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2024Well written and acted out series on the Royal Family. The collection itself came in near new condition. All of the discs play perfectly.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2022sept vacation 22, watched the whole series, more than likely it went that way, but we know its not the gospel truth, very entertaining, GOD rest HER Majesty's soul, very loyal to the crown, but with the new King, not so much, I think because for me she had that grandmother affect,
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2022I’ve enjoyed all seasons but beware the cast changes for season 3. I’ve enjoyed looking up the real history and whar actually happened after I watched the seasons, people who don’t care about UK or monarchy might still find this series entertaining, I would recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2020I loved this series SO MUCH, that I had to give it to my parents, who don't have any streaming services. So happy to find it for sale on DVD. This is a wonderful, fictional representation of the life of Queen Elizabeth and the royal family. Simply amazing--scenery is stunning and the acting is superb!! A+++
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2021Such humanity was projected into the royal family and those with whom they interacted. One can relate as a human being even though the ascendency into rarefied class of special individuals can never be touched. A man's coming to terms with his middle-age crisis in "Moondust" is a highlight!
