I just saw Metamorphosis (original Korean title - Byeonshin) for the first time recently and it immediately became one of my top favorites in the possession/exorcism subgenre. In the opening of the movie, a priest fails in his attempt to exorcise a young girl, and the attempt ends in her death. But the demon possessing her apparently feels that it's been robbed of its victim anyway, and in the coming months returns to haunt the priest's brother and his family in revenge. The 5-member family has recently moved to get away from the public attention around the exorcism, and the priest himself is dealing with a crisis in faith after his failure. Beginning with little things, the demon -- and this is actually different from most possession movies in that it's not a mere demon but instead Satan himself -- influences and haunts the family members, moving back and forth and in and out at will as his hold on the family gets stronger. The devil entity draws from a wider array of powers this time around, not just that it can go body-jumping from victim at will, each in turn, but also some unique powers that I don't want to get into here for fear of spoilers. He apparently has no desire early on to kill any of the family, preferring to torment and terrorize and play mind games with them. And that's also in keeping with his strong drive to torment the priest he faced before. Unfortunately for that priest, and his family, his crisis of faith has left him less equipped to deal with this sort of thing than he was before.

Just when you start to wonder if there's any more to be done with the possession subgenre, someone comes along and makes sure it stays fresh, does some new things with it. And just as a side note, if you're new to Korean horror with Metamorphosis, welcome aboard! They've done a ton of great horror movies over the last 20 years or so, including A Tale Of Two Sisters, The Uninvited [2003], I Saw The Devil, Voice, Train To Busan, The Ghost and a slew of others. So Metamorphosis is just one of the latest additions to a really exciting Korean horror scene.

Another piece of cinematic drivel from Shudder films. Korean Catholic priest looses young girl in a failed exorcism. Naturally the evil spirits come back to further torment him through his innocent brothers family. All the over-the-top horrors including skinned cats, suggested incest, blood and lots of family member torture. No happy endings...everyone looses...and mostly the viewer!
