Product Description
From Henry Hathaway, the outstanding director of The Shepherd of the Hills, The House on 92nd Street, Kiss of Death, Rawhide, 23 Paces to Baker Street and True Grit, comes this explosive WWII action-adventure starring screen legend Richard Burton (Where Eagles Dare) as a British intelligence officer who leads a daring attack on the German shore defenses at Tobruk. Infiltrating a German POW convoy, Captain Foster (Burton) learns that the commandos he hoped to link up with have been almost completely wiped out and the prisoners belong to a British medical unit. Aided by MacKenzie (John Colicos, Phobia), one of the surviving commandos, Foster whips the ragtag band of POWs into a fighting force—only to stumble into an unexpected meeting with the infamous Desert Fox, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (Wolfgang Preiss, The Train). Co-starring Karl-Otto Alberty (Kelly's Heroes, The Great Escape).

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2014This film was released in 1971. There are some scenes in this film that were taken from the film Tobruk. I think this film, Raid on Rommel, is the better of the two films. The film was made very clean copy of the film. The soundtrack of the film is wonderful. There are no scratches in the film or soundtrack. It is a great story with great actors. My only complaint is that there isn't a menu for the film. The DVD restarts the movie all over again after it ends. It is in a continuous loop. That does not take away from this movie. Just something to remember when you watch it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2014I ordered this movie and Tobruk together and both arrived together (extremely timely shipping) and in superb packaging. The movie itself is as I remembered and truly outstanding quality! If you are a lover of WW2 and action movies, this and Tobruk are good investments. (Similar, but slightly different approach to the same storyline on the same event in history--and with vastly different casts, both outstanding and well-selected.)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2022This movie is basically the same as Tobruk. It's just an copy cat!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2011An excellent movie starring Richard burton as a captured British Commando(IN cog- nito as a regular soldier looking to blow up the Main Nazi guns before they blow up a small convey as they attack the coast and the story of how he and a few other enlisted commandoes train a medical battalion to be commandoes themselves.
Sidenote: See how a conscientious objector becomes a heroe without firing a single shot(not a bullet anyways)!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2019Another good movie about WWII in north Africa that is well told.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good
What can one say about a film with Burton in, but Good, it says it all, great film great acting and great script, I think the girl could have been omitted she does nothing towards the story, makes one think why was she cast !!!! Must be a reason. But overall, very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raid On Rommel (1971)
This is a Scandinavian Blu-Ray release. Subtitles are available in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish. It’s a pity that English subtitles aren’t also available as there are a number of scenes where German is being spoken and whilst it doesn’t detract too much it would be interesting to know what the actors are actually saying. There is a small poster and four postcards featuring scenes from the film included with the package. UK distributors could learn from our European neighbours. As to the film itself if you’re reading this you’ll already know the plot and the fact that much of the action footage is recycled from Tobruk (1966). That doesn’t bother me as it’s a film I’ve watched and enjoyed since childhood. Fun, undemanding entertainment to pass away a wet Sunday afternoon.
