Product Description

Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) makes his animation debut with this fantasy adventure based on the beloved books by Kathryn Lasky. Young owl Soren marvels at his father's epic stories of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, mythic winged warriors who fought a great battle to save all owl kind from the evil Pure Ones. When he and brother Kludd fall from their treetop home and into the talons of the Pure Ones, it's up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave owls. Together they seek the Great Tree, home of the Guardians--the only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms. The stellar voice cast includes Abbie Cornish, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess and Hugo Weaving.

The quality of the movie was really good. It’s a beloved movie to watch with friends and family. The director and the producers did their research on owl.

Being a bird lover and fantasy buff, I greatly enjoyed this movie. The first thing which struck me was the jaw-dropping graphics and animation - some of the best I have seen in recent digitally animated films. The voice actors do a great job for their character's role, although Soren's voice did get a little annoying at times - funny because he is the main character. The story was fun to watch unfold and entertained me even though there were really no new concepts explored - the characters and story are typical for fantasy/adventure titles. I love how the owls move and act realistically for what you would expect for talking warrior birds. This movie is a little darker themed, which for me was an interesting and almost refreshing change from watching other overly cheery/happy digitally animated movies of it's kind. A caution to parents with kids under eight though - depending on the child, they may not be able to handle some of the battle scenes and strong character conflicts which occur later during the film. Personally I loved the battle scenes - they are very well directed and amazing to watch. The owls fight fiercely and simply use crafted helmets and metal claws; which once you see it looks more realistic than it sounds. Some people love it, some people hate it - I give it a 9 out of 10. Although it is full of under-developed characters and has a usual 'good warriors versus bad warriors' plot with plenty of cliches thrown in, it has become one of my favorites (even though I am normally very annoyed by cliched movies) and I would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy stories, owls, or spectacular digital effects.

I saw this (as an adult) when it first came out, not having read the books. I'm a huge animation buff so of course I had to see it. As everyone knows and has said, the animation is truly stunning. It is BY FAR the most visually beautiful animated film out there (and I've seen almost all, including anime which I love). The one thing that matches it are the Pandora scenes in Avatar. It is worth watching for the visuals alone, and 3D pushes it to an even more amazing level. If you don't usually watch or buy 3D, this one would be the one I'd say to make an exception with.

As for the overall movie quality, I enjoyed it enough to buy it when it was first released, so it wasn't only the visuals that I liked. You can certainly watch it without having read any Ga'Hoole books, but it is more enjoyable if you have. My 12yo and I just finished reading the first 3 books (which are what the movie is loosely based on), because I like to have her read the books before seeing any film adaptation whenever possible. We enjoyed them and she was very eager to see the movie. It was easier to follow this time because of the familiarity with the characters and plot from the books.

The movie takes some big departures from the books, but we didn't mind the changes at all, and felt that some were an improvement, as they were more plausible. The author Kathryn Lasky was one of the Exec. Producers, so I assume that she was involved in the adaptation process. Even though it's apparently based on books 1-3, from the book descriptions it seems to me to be also based somewhat on 4-6 (which is when war takes place).

She watched it again the day after we saw it, and I predict more repeat viewings!

As for age appropriateness, I'd say 8 and up, as it is more serious and intense and doesn't have a cartoony or upbeat feel of most Disney movies but is definitely more action-adventure. But there are some good moments of humor thrown in, largely provided by the bard-warrior Twilight who, for example, sings a particularly funny lullaby.

I watched this movie in 3d with my lady. This movie will just WOW your eyes. I am a movie buff, and this was the most stunning visuals i have ever seen. The owls are freaking gorgeous...lol...while watching this movie i thought to myself i actually wanted that white owl:0 The 2d version is great also. A friend came over and the kids were watching the dvd on their 37 inch hd tv...my friend was like WHAT IS THAT! lol. he couldn't stop looking at it(no joke it was that gorgeous). Had he seen it in 3d on my panny, he'd have tripped for real. If you want to get the most out your tv's visual's...this is a must buy. The 3d was better than Tangled 3d(which i still love) Step Up 3d(which is cool) and Tron 3d can't even come close...

The trees, water, flying and fighting of the owls, the shiny feathers of the owls...everything about this movie...ridiculous in detail. GET THIS MOVIE!!! I know my review is saying the same thing...but i mean...you just got to see it to know what I mean. I have a panny gt25 3d tv also if that helps anyone out there looking to buy this movie. The greatest thing about this movie is that the story keeps you interested. Its not a movie where you buy only for the 3d. You will actually watch this movie...the 3d and beauty will just AMAZE you and the story is quite suspenseful. Also, I treat my 3d movies like a movie theater...meaning I wait til its nighttime, turn off the lights and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schöne Kinderbuch-Verfilmung auf einer technisch erstklassigen Blu Ray
Reviewed in Germany on February 28, 2011

5.0 out of 5 stars un blu ray sompteux
Reviewed in France on June 3, 2015

    5.0 out of 5 stars Recensione BLU-RAY 3D!
Reviewed in Italy on February 8, 2024
