Product Description
From Don Siegel, the legendary director of Dirty Harry, Charley Varrick, The Black Windmill and Escape from Alcatraz comes this hardboiled crime-drama starring screen greats Richard Widmark (Backlash) and Henry Fonda (The Ox-Bow Incident). This critically acclaimed detective drama takes a hard-hitting look at the lives and loves of New York City’s top cops. Directed in gripping documentary style by Siegel, Widmark portrays the veteran Big Apple detective who is given only a few hours to track down a vicious killer. Fonda is the humane yet relentlessly forceful police commissioner who orders Widmark into the streets to solve the case, even though it might be his last assignment. The top-notch cast includes Inger Stevens (Firecreek), Harry Guardino (The Enforcer), James Whitmore (Them!), Susan Clark (Valdez Is Coming), Don Stroud (Coogan’s Bluff), Sheree North (Breakout), Warren Stevens (Forbidden Planet) and Raymond St. Jacques (Cotton Comes to Harlem). Screenplay by Abraham Polonsky (Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here) and Howard Rodman (The Six Million Dollar Man) with stunning CinemaScope cinematography by acclaimed DP Russell Metty (Touch of Evil).

- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2013Madigan is Detective Dan Madigan, as depicted by Richard Widmark, a tough-as-nails New York City cop who with his partner, Detective Rocco Bonaro (Harry Guardino), sets out to make what will presumably be just another routine arrest, in this instance of career criminal Barney Benesch. Unbeknownst to the two cops, however, Benesch, a sex-addicted psychopath played to the hilt by Steve Ihnat, is the principal suspect in a recent homicide. Benesch gets the drop on the two detectives after they storm his room, seizes their service revolvers and makes his escape. The rest of the film follows Madigan and Bonaro as they follow leads in their pursuit of the crazed fugitive, having been given seventy-two hours to bring him in and and retrieve their weapons or face the consequences. This ultimatum was directed by the Police Commissioner himself, Anthony X. Russell (Henry Fonda), a ramrod straight individual who sees life in terms of right and wrong, with no room for excusing even the slightest impropriety. It seems that the Commissioner is not quite so rigid in the morals department when it comes to his personal life, however. He is carrying on an illicit affair with a married socialite (Susan Clark) and he's conflicted over what to do when he is furnished with evidence obtained from a wiretapped conversation indicating that his colleague and boyhood chum, Chief Inspector Charles Kane (James Whitmore), might have been compromised. Madigan is not without his own problems on the home front, either. Inger Stevens, as his bored and lonely wife whose life revolves around her husband, sits around their apartment waiting for him to come home while Madigan is out in the trenches doing whatever it is he's doing. The film continues to build up momentum as the NYPD finally closes in on Benesch in his squalid hotel room hide-out, and its climactic, bullet-splattered finale does not disappoint. (This film was based on actual events in the case of free lance gun for hire August Robles, who was shot to death in his East Harlem hideout by members of the NYPD during a raging gun battle on February 20, 1955).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2009MADIGAN(1968)---Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Harry Guardino, Inger Stevens, James Whitmore, Susan Clark, Michael Dunn, Don Stroud
A gritty New York City "cop/crime" drama, directed by Don Siegel. Widmark plays the title role---a detective who puts his job before everything else, including his wife, played by Inger Stevens. Madigan is a tough veteran who doesn't always "play by the book". His equally tough partner is played by Harry Guardino. During a routine arrest of a suspect wanted for questioning, Widmark and Guardino "drop the ball"; the suspect escapes and subsequently murders several people, including two cops. This does not please "strictly by the book" Police Commissioner Fonda, who gives Widmark and Guardino 72 hours to find their man. Along the way, Fonda must deal with evidence that his closest friend and subordinate, Chief Inspector James Whitmore, may be "in bed" with a mobster and he is forced to re-evaluate his rigid code of conduct because of his affair with a married woman(Fonda's character is a widower). As I said, this is a gritty, complex film, with no easy conclusions or "pat answers". Widmark, Fonda, and Whitmore all turn in their usual first-rate performances, as does all of the cast of this fine film.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2019Kino Lorber Studio Classics releases this long overdue, Don Siegel directed 1968 police/detective drama set in New York City on Blu-ray in a superb HD restoration that blows away the ancient, non-anamorphic Universal Studios DVD. Extras include an audio commentary with film historians Howard S. Berger, Steve Mitchell, and Nathanial Thompson, theatrical trailer and TV spots. Good film starring Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Harry Guardino, Inger Stevens, and many others is well worth getting.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2014Reasons I think this movie is awesome:
1. The movie and its plot sort of reminded me of Killer's Kiss by S. Kubrick
2. I absolutely loved Widmark's and Fonda's characterization. They played their characters exceptionally well.
3. For the fans of 1960's gritty New York City, there is something here to see.
4. Those of you who like realistic police/detective dramas with a slowly developing plot, you will enjoy watching Madigan (1968).
5. If like Madigan, I also recommend watching: The Detective (1968), Tony Rome (1967), Lady in Cement (1968), and The First Deadly Sin (1980) all with Frank Sinatra.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great performance. Fonda was fantastic
Been a while since I saw Richard Widmark in a movie without it being a western. Great performance. Fonda was fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good gritty cop thriler
If you like your thrillers lean and mean then this is a film for you.
Two cops with a contrasting way of doing there job(in persuit of the same deranged killer ) an old cinema cliche but with actors of the calabar of Fonda and Widmark and belivable dilouge and what feels like an authentic script Madigan works.
Don Sigel directs in what appears to be a warm up for Dirty Harry a taut Thriller
about a hard boiled mavrick detective (Widmakr) and his unemphatic rigid boss (Fonda) who is guided as much by his displine to buracratic sytems and correct procedure as his iretent Madigan is by gut instinct and ready use of his fist's.
I woouldn't put money that Fonda and Widmark are together in a film for the first time(I'm sure they made some western together) but when these two clash on screen it really is something and it's there verbal battles which make the film a stand out for this viewer. The climax is shocking.
A good comercal action film if you like'd Bullit Copland Serpico and Dirty Harry this ought to be your ticket. An entertaining but non the less riveting little Cop opera.
