Flying Clipper follows the untold adventures of a Swedish sailing ship and its young crew as they navigate the Mediterranean Sea in the early 1960s.
Blu-ray
Flying Clipper, directed by Hermann Leitner and featuring narration from Burl Ives is a stunning travelogue that takes you to the dreamiest destinations of the old world. Under the stewardship of Captain Skoglund, a group of 20 Merchant Marine cadets venture through historical landmarks, such as Tutankhamen's tomb, and other known wonders of the Mediterranean coastline. First Portugal, then Egypt, this odyssey travels to various points in Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Monaco, ending in Spain.
Photographed in 1962 with specially designed 70mm cameras, Flying Clipper was the first German film produced in this high-resolution large format. Whether it's the spectacular imagery of the Formula 1 race in Monaco or the seascape views aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La, this documentary is a technical masterpiece that preserves the breathtaking visuals of its maiden voyage.
Cinematography by Tony Braun (The Wild Geese), Siegfried Hold (Old Shatterhand), Heinz Hölscher (Rampage at Apache Wells), Klaus König (Go For It, Baby) and Bernhard Stebich.
Scanned in 4K from an original 70mm print and digitally restored, Flying Clipper now unfolds in your home theater with the same brilliance as a cinema screen.
With a completely new Dolby Atmos design created to enhance the subtle nuances of the original sound (German and English), you experience the thunderous racing atmosphere of Monaco in the middle of your living room. Now available for the first time in the US on Blu-ray and UHD 4K Blu-ray.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2019I got hooked after viewing a snippet of FLYING CLIPPER on YT. What I believed I was seeing was some type of CGI recreation of USN aircraft carrier operations c.1962. Wrong... The footage was restored 70mm color film and it's gorgeous. This film is a good ol' fashioned "colour travelogue" as was seen in 1950's and '60s moviehouses, then TV. It doesn't get any better than Burl Ives as your host. Looks great on our 4K Samsung curvy tube.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2019From the 50s comes this stunning travelogue through the Mediterranean shot in a special 70mm camera designed and built in Sweden. A must for every collection!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2019Never mind the feature; watch the extras and you will come away with a BA in film.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2023Saw it at the Stanley Warner Cinerama theatre first run.......projected full scrren 70mm Cinerama..as Mediterranean Holiday.... that was at that time the best way to see it. And there was a sountrack album that came out as well. Like most large scale travelogue features...you see the world in a better, more vibrant era. Go for it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2019This movie presents an incredible, tour de force travelogue experience, the first ever German motion picture filmed in 70mm, which allows for visuals that are an absolute feast for the senses. Flying Clipper’s journey takes us on a tour of some of the Mediterranean’s most famous locales, but when seen through the 70mm vision, it is like seeing these sights again for the first time, as the scale and screen presence are so impressive. I also appreciate the variety of not only which places are visited, but what we are shown from these locations and the Formula 1 race in Monaco was a real highlight. I don’t consider myself a motor sports fan in the least, but that was a stunning experience when presented like this, though again, it is just one of numerous such remarkable stops. The sheer visual spectacle of Flying Clipper is enough to steer people to give it a look, but there is also rich historic value, given the natural and cultural content it explores.
