Product Description
With this intimate supernatural drama, the celebrated French filmmaker Olivier Assayas conjures a melancholy ghost story set in the world of haute couture. Starring Kristen Stewart, whose performance in Assayas's Clouds of Sils Maria made her the first American actor to win a Cesar Award, this evocative character study tells the story of a young American fashion assistant and spiritual medium who is living in Paris and searching for signs of an afterlife following the sudden death of her twin brother. A stirring depiction of grief in the form of a psychological thriller, Personal Shopper which won Assayas the best director award at Cannes is a chilling meditation on modern modes of communication and the way we mourn those we love.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2018Thought provoking, intelligent, modern ghost story of an American in Paris passive-aggressively working as a detached personal shopper who also freelances as a spirit medium, and her longing for a paranormal sign from her deceased twin. Deliberately paced and mundane treatment of the supernatural and psychological horror creates it's ambiance of loneliness and grief, while still being able to remain creepy. The metaphors of the personal shopper and spirit medium are brilliantly utilized in the films existential themes of identity, belief, loss, guilt, alienation, and the need for communication that is missing in modern society as the characters helplessly reach out for meaning from the ennui. Excellent direction and use of European setting. Very much in the cinematic and thematic style of Michelangelo Antonioni's films with a ambiguous paranormal mystery touch that one might find in the works of David Lynch, and is highly recommended for fans of both. Also recommended is director Olivier Assayas' companion piece Clouds Of Sils Maria. A surprisingly atmospheric and haunting (some pun intended) film that easily captures the current cultural environment. The Criterion Blu ray also contains interviews and an essay.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018Unexpectedly loved this film. Bought the Criterion based on rumblings of the acting of Kristen Stewart. I had no expectations and new nothing about the films plot and I am glad that was the case. With my blank slate, I simply watched and observed and took it all in. The films title does little to reflect what this film is actually about -- which is quite a lot. A meditation on our modern world, spiritualism, materialism, a thriller, a quiet introspective mystery of the universe both seen and hidden. Olivier Assayas is on my radar as one of my most favorite directors.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2023Personal Shopper is a smaller-budget independent film from 2016 starring Kristen Stewart. In this one, she stars as Maureen, an American living in Paris who works as a personal shopper for a French supermodel. Maureen is also a medium who is waiting for a message from the afterlife from her deceased twin brother. She also has the same genetic heart condition that killed her brother and gets sicker over the course of the movie. The movie is in part a supernatural psychological thriller and in part a crime story. The two storylines interweave with each other throughout the course of the movie and work better at different points than others.
The A/V quality of the blu-ray is very good. The movie is not laden with special effects, but the location shots around Europe look very good, especially if you are watching on a large screen. The extras include the movie trailer, an almost 20-minute interview with the director, Oliver Assayas, and a 46-minute question and answer session from Cannes Film Festival.
Overall, the movie is good, but not great. Given that Stewart seems to play more understated characters better than she does more charismatic characters, this role definitely suits her. I would not classify it as a must-watch, but if you are a fan of Stewart or indie movies in general, it is a good one to check out.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2018I loved this movie. Ive watched it 4 times, and learned something new each time. It was so intriguing but scared me at the same time. My friends and I had numerous discussions about the sender of the text messages. I think Personal Shopper is one of the best movies Ive seen all year.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019This movie is great. I have watched it multiple times due to the unique story line. It's a little scary/puts you on edge, but it's just really good. Kristen Stewart is such a great actress!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2018An odd gem: slow moving, a bit of a throwback to deliberately paced paranormal thrillers like Don't Look Now. It also shows Kristen Stewart's continuing evolution from "that girl from the Twilight movies" to a serious and accomplished actor.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2021I,liked this item.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2018Kristen Stewart is perhaps one of the most polarizing actresses in recent memory and this film does little to push opinion of her one way or the other. The concept behind this film is intriguing and the direction fluid and self-assured but this is a film that truly depends on characters to tell the story. Stewart plays the titular role who works in Paris for an aging actress desperately working through a divorce and encroaching obscurity. Stewart is seeking a sign from beyond the grave from her twin brother who dropped dead in Paris. Through the course of the film we are taken on a tense ride of supernatural and all-too-natural dangers in her course for the truth - is there life after death?
Truthfully, this film will only enhance your original opinion of Stewart - if you think she is a talent-less mannequin or a master of underrated subtlety you will walk away from this film with your beliefs confirmed. The film is entertaining, mysterious, and inscrutable so if you're looking for a film with concrete answers you will be sorely disappointed. Directly Olivier Assayas creates an experience very similar to The Turn of The Screw by withholding information from the viewer and presenting an oft-times maddening middle of the road stance on the proceedings - it is wholly up to the viewer to decrypt and interpret this film.
Criterion has, per usual, created a excellent release of this film. The transfer is clean, audio was clear, and the extras were a bit scanty compared to their usual plethora of commentaries and interviews. We get a single interview with the director, a liner note essay, and a press conference.
In the end I would suggest this film to people with long attention spans and those who enjoy dissecting and interpreting their films. The film is rewarding but sometimes it's hard to work your way through it...

When you’re thinking that you Are a consummate movie watcher, sometimes your skill is diminish by a lack of vision.

when you downplay a movie like this because of the star (Kristen Stewart) for the soul purpose of her shenanigan affair.
you leave the craft behind an that’s as dull as boring a hole an don’t know what to do with it.
even if you stick your finger in that hole you can’t stay there long cause you have other things to do, like live.? love Miss Steward.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ghost Shopper
