Product Description
Nominated for four Academy Awards® including Best Director, Seven Beauties (1975) stars Giancarlo Giannini (Swept Away) as Pasqualino Frafuso, known in Naples as "Pasqualino Seven Beauties." A petty thief who lives off the profits of his seven sisters while claiming to protect their honor at any cost, Pasqualino is arrested for murder and later sent to fight in the army after committing sexual assault. Something of a tool, and a tool of history, he is captured by the Germans and sent to a concentration camp, where he plots to make his escape by seducing a German officer. Outrageously funny and harrowingly sad, it is one of Lina Wertmu ller s most enduring and haunting works.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2024I received a good quality copy of the used DVD I bought.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024I've watched the film several times. Captured Giannini and Wertmuller (Dir) during the height of their careers. A wondrous mixture of nightmare and humor. A true masterpiece.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2024Brings back memories, saw it when it was first released in the U.S.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2022Quite simply my favorite movie, period. From the world-weary opening montage to the jaw-dropping scene of Pasqualino and the mirror at the end, an astonishing work of art. Here is the human condition, filthy and beautiful and brutal and gentle. This movie is at once very funny and darkly tragic. Giancarlo’s eyes are eloquent beyond all measure. Throughout, his character makes horrible, indefensible decisions and yet it is the brilliant achievement of this film and Lina Wertmuller that we cannot be sure that we would not make the same choices. Sex, love, politics, death, and arguably the best insane asylum rape scene ever: it’s all here. Even the music is perfect. I am a cinephile and love Ozu and “Casablanca” and “Blue Velvet” and dozens of other wonderful movies. This is the best
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021I love this film, so much so I wanted to own a copy in case I felt the need to watch it again. I took a chance on the BD for the picture quality because it is a film full of images to remember. Unfortunately the English soundtrack is not on this disc. For most people interested in foreign films (including me) I'd rather watch it with subtitles but the English soundtrack to this film is not bad, probably using many of the original actors voices, plus I'm playing it with others who don't seem as interested in following subtitles plus all the awesome cinematography. To have it included in a DVD version of this film from over 10 years ago but not on a recent BD version sounds like a rip off. Mad Max on BD actually has two soundtracks on it, the Aussie English version and US English dubbed version! I may or may not keep this BD version but I'm grabbing the DVD version while its still affordable because it sounds like a rarity now.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2017Great restoration work on behalf of Kino! Picture looks sharp on the new Blu Rays and now I will be able to expand my Lina Wertmuller collection with additions such as Swept Away, Ferdinando and Carolina and Summer Night - all available in the second half of September 2017 on Blu Ray.
It is not a light movie - take for example the concentration camp scene with Wagner's Walküre in the background. It is very harsh, yet one of the best sarcasms I've seen in a movie on race superiority. The "Seven Beauties" - is a slight over-qualification, even though the hero's seven sisters are anything but plain looking. Very, very dramatic movie. I was looking for years for the soundtrack, but it appears Enzo Jannacci never made one of this movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2021I saw a movie DVD with Blu-ray back years ago, and now HD ultra. Brilliant and dark comedy, and a lot of great actors. I couldn't ask for a better one, especially like this one "Seven Beauties" was even better, especially "Giancarlo Giannini", the good Italian actor (he used to play the last movie with an acor Daniel Crag "Casino Royale").
Same man Giancarlo Giannini; wiser and older, and plus it grew his white full hairs and still handsome! You must see it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2018This is perhaps her best film, she was nominated in 1977 for Best Director. Featuring Ginacarlo Giannini as a petty criminal who has Seven Sisters whose virtues he is unable to protect. Set in the backdrop of Fascist Italy, the movie has renewed potency in our own political times. Funny, sexy, often terrifying, the movie jumps in time as the main character is beset by the winds of fortune. A word of warning, film might offend some in that its sexual mores may seem antiquated to many. Remeber, they're Italian, and the director is a woman, who worked with Fellini for many years. Seven Beauties is a must for any devote of film.

1.0 out of 5 stars Vorsicht!

4.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic!
Timeless and well worth watching. It is subtitles but try not to let that put you off this director's classic. The great actors are excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic
This is a rather unique film. All of the elements are good from acting, set, storyline and directing. In my opinion Seven Beauties is an important (albeit disturbing) and classic film. It's not for everyone but people who like it, love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fellini style black comedy/drama
If you like Fellini, you will love his protege's film "Seven Beauties". Lina Wertmuller (director) creates challenging and provocative scenes using her style as learned from Fellini. The filming is magnificent, the lighting superb and the acting so Italian. Giancarlo Giannini (leading man) displays his fabulous style with soft, dreamy eyes as well as a unique communicative ability for each scene. Very well acted by all particularly the female German Commandant. Superbly Italian in flavour.
